However, it hadn’t rained in the forest. That was important because we needed dry places for our first survival activity: building shelters. There were three leaders, each responsible for 10 students. After we were divided into three groups, we started collecting broken tree branches and leaves to build our shelters. Then we ate a light breakfast we had prepared at home. After breakfast, we learned how to build a fire safely. For lunch, we had hot dogs and potatoes cooked over the fire. After lunch, we put out the fire and got ready to look for food in the forest. Our leaders showed us which foods were safe. We returned late in the afternoon. Each group made their own campfire and learned to cook soup for supper over the fire with the things we had collected. It was delicious. We all enjoyed the trip.

Festival Guide: Spring Celebrations
Are you looking for a meaningful travel experience? These three festivals offer unique cultural insights into how different cultures welcome spring and celebrate life.
Songkran (Thailand)
Celebrated from April 13 to 15, Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year, one of the country’s most important holidays. Water plays a central role throughout the celebration — people gently pour water on Buddha statues (佛像) for good luck, then go to the streets for friendly water fights that last all day. Families also visit temples to offer food to monks. The water symbolizes cleaning away the past year’s misfortunes and starting fresh, making it a time of both joy and spiritual reflection.
Holi (India)
Known as the “Festival of Colors”, Holi arrives with the full moon in March, signaling the end of winter. Participants of all ages throw colorful powder and water at each other, creating joyful chaos (喧闹) in every street and square. Beyond the fun, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil, a theme drawn from ancient stories. It’s also a time when social differences are temporarily forgotten, as people from all backgrounds come together to share food, music, and laughter late into the evening.
Nowruz (Iran)
Nowruz, meaning “new day”, welcomes spring on the spring equinox (around March 20), a tradition dating back over 3,000 years. Families prepare weeks in advance by cleaning their homes completely — a practice called “shaking the house” — to remove any bad luck from the previous year. They then set a special table with seven items starting with the letter “S”, each standing for health, wealth, and rebirth. Relatives gather to share a festive meal, celebrating renewal and the promise of a fresh start.
Visitor Tips:
1 Respect local customs and traditions.
2 Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy (for Holi and Songkran).
3 Book accommodations well in advance as these festivals attract large crowds.

A. It brings people together across all backgrounds.
B. It requires participants to follow strict dress codes.
C. It follows ancient lunar calendar traditions.
D. It takes place mostly in outdoor spaces.
23. What do Songkran and Nowruz have in common according to the text?
A. Both festivals use water to honor traditional beliefs.
B. Each includes a custom to greet new beginning.

Dear Mom,
It’s me, Faisal Abdullah Malik, your son from Pakistan, who crossed the border for a heart transplant. You saved my life a decade ago by making a decision that only a mother as extraordinary as you could make.
On 26 December 2014, both our lives changed forever. Karthick, your beloved son, was brought to Tirupur Government Hospital, near Coimbatore, in southern India, after a tragic road accident. He was later transferred to G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital. When the doctors declared him brain dead, you had to face the unthinkable, holding his hand, saying your silent goodbyes.
In the depths of that unimaginable grief, Mom, you made a choice that speaks of boundless courage and selflessness. You not only gave me Karthick’s heart but also donated five other organs, giving the gift of life to six strangers. You made this difficult decision without ever questioning the race, religion, or nationality. Your decision was solely about saving lives.
Today, as a father of two growing children, I can truly understand the magnitude of your sacrifice. I can only imagine the storm of emotions you must have battled. Did you question if it was the right decision? Did you fear it was too much to bear? And yet, in the darkest hour of your life, you chose life for others. You chose hope. I know Karthick must be so proud of you, as am I, Mom. I am alive today because of your strength.
Tearing apart the political divide, I have longed to meet you, Mom. I have travelled to Chennai several times since receiving Karthick’s heart, always hoping to somehow find a way to Coimbatore. But my medical visa restricts me from travelling outside Chennai. You might be wondering why I don’t even call you? Names of donors and recipients are kept confidential, and I feel helpless.
Allah tells us in The Qur’an, “Whoever saves a life, it is as if they saved all of humanity.” Mom, you embody it. I love you, Mom, forever and always.
Yours always,
Faisal

The world is a noisy place, filled with various sounds that often make it hard to focus. With support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Mounya Elhilali is helping us listen more effectively — not just to conversations but also to the important sounds used to diagnose (诊断) disease and the signs that help people with hearing challenges move safely in their surroundings. Elhilali is leading efforts to make stethoscopes (听诊器) intelligent, improve speech recognition in noisy environments, and push the limits of how technology can improve our ability to understand what we hear.
In 2022, Elhilali, together with her colleagues, developed a smart digital stethoscope. “Traditional stethoscopes, while widely used, are often unreliable due to noise, the need for expert interpretation, and subjective variability,” she says. “Our research introduces new, advanced listening technology that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with new sensing materials to make diagnoses more reliable.”
This advanced stethoscope uses a special material that can be adjusted to reduce or block out some background noises, making lung sounds clearer. It also uses AI, including models of the airways and neural networks, to study breathing sounds. Elhilali and her team trained their algorithm (算法) on over 1,500 patients across Asia and Africa.
This technology is currently being used in clinical studies in Bangladesh, Malawi, South Africa, and Guatemala, as well as in the pediatric emergency room at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. A version of the device, now called Feelix, has received FDA approval and is being marketed by the Baltimore spinoff Sonavi Labs.
“This technology is already making a difference. It is being used in rural clinics, mobile health units, and large hospitals to assist emergency responders and health care providers around the world in providing time-saving, cost-effective pulmonary assessments (肺部评估), especially in areas with limited access to imaging tools like X-rays and ultrasounds,” Elhilali said.
28. What is the main focus of Mounya Elhilali’s research?
A. To help deaf people hear better. B. To reduce the influence of noise in life.
C. To make medical tools more advanced. D. To use AI for better medical listening.
29. How does the new stethoscope achieve better performance?
A. It makes lung sounds louder. B. It depends on AI to replace doctors.
C. It combines noise control with AI. D. It blocks lung sounds to improve clarity.
30. What does Elhilali’s statement in the last paragraph suggest?
A. It aids care in areas with poor resources. B. It is affordable for places with tight budgets.
C. It reduces the steps for diagnosis. D. It performs the same role as imaging tools.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Future of Stethoscopes. B. A Smart Stethoscope for Better Diagnosis.
C. The Invention of Stethoscopes. D. A Smart Stethoscope Saves Many Lives.

A new fast-food restaurant, BurgerBot, is getting a lot of attention in the restaurant industry. It hires robots instead of humans to prepare meals. The restaurant features robots that can work non-stop to make burgers without breaks.
BurgerBot is part of a growing trend (趋势) of robots in the food service industry. The restaurant believes its technology is suitable for tasks that humans aren’t interested in, such as making burgers. This development comes when many fast-food restaurants face difficulties in hiring and keeping staff. Robot workers help restaurants run smoothly without dealing with staff problems.
The introduction of fully automated (自动的) restaurants raises questions about the future of job markets in the food service industry. Fast food has long provided many jobs, especially for people starting their first job or those without higher education. With statements like “the robots are taking our jobs”, BurgerBot admits the substitution of human workers but says it’s a change we can’t avoid. The restaurant sees this shift as progress, not a problem.
BurgerBot stresses cleanliness and standardization as key benefits of its robot-made food. By avoiding human contact, the automated system helps lower the risk of food being prepared in an unclean way. It also ensures equal amounts of food are served each time. This reduces the variation that comes with human preparation. However, there are still questions about how customers will respond to the lack of human contact. It remains to be seen whether the standard quality of robot-made food can make up for the loss of the human touch in food preparation.
As this technology grows, customers will eventually decide whether cleanliness and standardization are more important than the skill and care that humans put into preparing food.
32. Why does BurgerBot think robots are suitable for some restaurant tasks?
A. They work faster than humans. B. They make food more creative.
C. They do tasks people don’t like to do. D. They reduce the cost of hiring human staff.
33. What does the underlined word “substitution” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Replacement. B. Employment.
C. Improvement. D. Requirement.
34. How might some customers react to the robots?
A. They don’t believe robots can make food.
B. They dislike food that looks exactly the same.
C. They miss the care that people put into cooking.
D. They are worried that robots use too much energy.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. How Fast Food Restaurants Develop B. Why Robot-made Food Benefits Health
C. Why Human Workers Are Better Than Robots D. How Robots Are Changing Fast Food Service

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters, often striking without warning and causing great damage. Understanding what to do during and after an earthquake can save lives.
____36____ If you are indoors when an earthquake hits, the first rule is to stay calm. Rushing outside in panic (惊慌地) can lead to injuries from falling objects. Instead, hide under a table or desk, holding on to one leg to stay balanced as the ground shakes. Avoid standing near windows, mirrors, or heavy furniture that could fall over.
Once the shaking stops, check the environment around you before moving. Check for any immediate dangers, such as gas leaks (泄漏), or broken electrical wires, or structural damage.
____37____ If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply right away and open windows. For electrical issues, turn off the main power to prevent fires.

A Special Day with Traditional Arts
Last Friday, our school held a wonderful activity called “Hands-on Intangible Cultural Heritage Day” in the school hall. The main purpose was to help us understand traditional Chinese culture better and let us experience the fun of making things by hand.
During the activity, we tried different traditional crafts. I learned paper-cutting and made a red “double happiness” character with the help of a teacher. My classmates and I also practiced writing the Chinese character “Fu” with brushes and ink. It was challenging but very interesting.
This activity was really meaningful. It not only brought us joy but also made us realize the beauty and value of our cultural traditions. We all felt proud to be part of such a rich culture.

Let me tell you all about an amazing survival weekend trip with my class. When the bus picked us up from the school gate at six in the morning, IT was raining heavily, which wasn't great. However, IT hadn't rained in the forest. That was important because we needed dry places for our first survival activity, building shelters. There were three leaders, each responsible for ten students. After we were divided into three groups, we started collecting tree branches and leaves to build our shelters. Then we ate a light breakfast we have prepared at home. After breakfast, we learned how to build a fire safely. For lunch, we had hot dogs and potatoes cooked over the fire. After lunch, we put out the fire and got ready to look for food in the forest. Our leaders showed us which foods were safe. We returned late in the afternoon. Each group made their own team fire and learned to cook soup for supper over the fire with the things we had collected. IT was delicious. We all enjoy the trip.

Dear Mom,
It’s me, Faisal Abdullah Malik, your son from Pakistan, who crossed the border for a heart transplant.

D

If you are trapped under objects after an earthquake, saving energy is key. ____38____ Shout only when you hear rescuers nearby — non-stop shouting can waste energy and leave you very tired. Instead, tap on a pipe or wall with a hard object to let others know your location. This method is more useful and helps you use less energy, increasing your chances of being found.
After an earthquake, communities often face long-term challenges, including homelessness, shortage of clean water, and the spread of disease. ____39____ Local governments and aid organizations set up shelters, give out food and water, and provide medical care to those in need. However, recovery takes time, and people can help by donating supplies or volunteering.
By learning about earthquake safety measures and preparing an emergency kit in advance, you can protect yourself and your family when disaster strikes. ____40____
A. These problems require common efforts to solve.
B. Every second matters in such a dangerous situation.
C. Try to stay as quiet as possible to save your strength.
D. Do not use elevators, as they may stop during the quake.
E. Knowing what to do during the quake itself is important.
F. Preparation is the best way to face such unexpected disasters.
G. Never light a match or use a candle to check for any damage.
