While many California girls love the beach, Chloe Kim has favored snow since childhood. Born in Long Beach, California in 2000 to South Korean parents, she was introduced to snowboarding at 4. Showing great athletic talent, she started competing at 6. Though supported by her parents, who advised her to focus on education, she studied French in Switzerland during third and fourth grades.
Back in California, her dad drove her nearly six hours every weekend to a ski resort for snowboarding training. The effort paid off: she won gold at the 2015 X Games as the youngest ever, then claimed another gold at the 2018 Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics with a nearly perfect 100 score in the halfpipe (U型场地). This win was particularly meaningful for the young athlete as her extended South Korean family attended to support her.
However, the heavy expectations and competition anxiety took a toll, making her consider quitting. With a therapist’s help, she recognized her value beyond being an athlete. She then adjusted her training routine, practicing old moves and only choosing exciting, challenging ones to reignite her initial passion for the sport.
As she prepares for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Chloe acknowledges she could break the halfpipe record. But she has decided in advance that win or lose, she won’t let stress dominate her or a loss define her. “True success is being content with where you are and who you are,” she said. “When mentally, physically and spiritually strong, you can achieve anything. That’s my current state, which is why I feel pretty successful now.”
4. Why was Chloe Kim’s 2018 Winter Olympics gold medal especially meaningful?
A. She got a nearly perfect score of 100 in the halfpipe.
B. Part of her South Korean family rooted for her on site.
C. She became the youngest gold medalist in the X Games.
D. It helped her decide to continue snowboarding competition.
5. The underlined phrase “took a toll” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. had a negative effect B. brought great benefits
C. created new opportunities D. attracted public attention
6. What can be inferred about Chloe Kim’s attitude towards the 2026 Winter Olympics?
A. She is overly anxious about breaking the record.
B. She cares more about the result than the process.
C. She doubts her ability to compete in the halfpipe.
D. She is mentally prepared to handle different outcomes.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The challenges Chloe Kim faced in her snowboarding career.
B. Chloe Kim’s achievements in major snowboarding competitions.
C. Chloe Kim’s preparation for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
D. Chloe Kim’s journey of snowboarding and her understanding of success.

Robert Campbell, a 68-year-old retired teacher from Glasgow, has lived with type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) for a decade. Recently, worrying blurriness in his vision prompted him to seek a screening for diabetic retinopathy — a diabetes-related eye disease that causes blindness. Traditionally, he would have faced a long wait for a specialist appointment within Scotland’s National Health Service.
His local clinic, however, was part of a new pilot program using an AI-powered platform for eye disease called “RetinaScan AI”. The process was simple: a staff member took a photograph of Robert's retina (视网膜). Within minutes, the system provided an automated assessment, detecting subtle signs of the disease with remarkable accuracy. This initiative effectively skipped the traditional bottleneck, bringing expert-level screening directly to the community.
The technology is built on deep learning. The AI was trained on hundreds of thousands of retinal images previously labeled by eye doctors. Through this process, it learned to identify critical indicators of diabetic eye disease with a consistency unaffected by humantedness. Its primary role is screening: efficiently identifying healthy patients and flagging those, like Robert, who require urgent specialist care.
“Platforms like RetinaScan AI are game-changers,” explains Dr. Eleanor Reed, a consultant eye doctor. “They don’t replace our expertise; they enhance it. By handling the massive initial screening workload, they ensure that human specialists can focus their skills on complex diagnoses and treatment planning, ultimately preventing preventable vision loss.”
The Glasgow pilot has already yielded promising results. In its first six months, the program successfully screened over 5,000 patients, cutting average wait times for screening from 12 weeks to just days. More importantly, it has accurately tagged hundreds of at risk individuals, like Robert, for early intervention, demonstrating a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.
Robert Campbell’s story is just the first chapter. This pilot program paves the way for AI technology to expand globally, reaching millions who need these vital screenings.
8. What problem did Robert Campbell face before the the AI program was introduced?
A. He was found to have a rare diabetic eye disease.
B. His eye disease was too advanced to be treated.
C. His local clinic lacked the necessary equipment.
D. He had to wait long for a specialist appointment.
9. What is the main advantage of “RetinaScan AI” according to the text?
A. It replaces the need for human doctors.
B. It provides immediate treatment for patients.
C. It offers quick and accurate screening in communities.
D. It is cheaper than traditional screening methods.
10. Why does Dr Eleanor Reed call AI platforms “game-changers”?
A. They finally avoid vision loss. B. They conduct initial screenings.
C. They treat complex diseases. D. They work without specialists.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is AI the Doctor’s Newest Assistant? B. How is AI Transforming Eye Care?
C. What Could AI Contribute to Humans? D. Can AI Systems See More Than Doctors?
D
As a college student majoring in digital media, I once thought traditional paper-cutting was outdated — especially in the age of modern printing technology that could mass-produce fancy patterns in seconds. So when my grandma asked me to learn paper-cutting with her last summer, I agreed only out of politeness.
Grandma had been a paper-cutting artist for over 50 years. Her works, featuring lions, peonies and folk stories, decorated every corner of our house. But my first attempt was frustrating. The scissors slipped constantly, and the paper-cut rabbit I made looked more like a funny-looking cat. “Why bother with this when modern printing can do it better and faster?” I complained. Grandma didn’t argue. She just handed me an old album full of her works from different years.
In the album, I saw a paper-cut of a family reunion she made for my parents’ wedding, and another of a little girl chasing butterflies-drawn for me when I was born. “Paper-cutting isn’t just about patterns,” she said gently. “Every cut carries memories and emotions that machines can’t copy.” That night, I stayed up watching her work. Her gnarled (粗糙的) fingers moved quickly, and a vivid dragon took shape on the red paper in minutes.
Inspired, I tried again. This time, I decided to combine tradition with technology. I used computer software to design a draft of a paper-cut themed on “lunar new year’s reunion”, then followed grandma’s teachings to refine every detail by hand. When I showed her the final work — a mix of classic patterns and modern composition — her eyes lit up. Later, we submitted it to a cultural heritage competition and won the second prize.
Now, I run a small online account sharing our collaborative works. Many young people comment that they’ve started to appreciate traditional crafts again. Modern technology is powerful, but grandma taught me that the warmth of human hands and the emotions in handcrafted works are irreplaceable. This experience didn’t just make me love paper-cutting; it made me understand how to protect traditions in a fast-paced, industrialized world.
12. Why did the author agree to learn paper-cutting at first?
A. She was eager to inherit the traditional craft.
B. She wanted to combine it with digital technology.
C. She didn’t want to make her grandma unhappy.
D. She needed it for her digital media courses.
13. What did grandma do when the author complained about paper-cutting?
A. She criticized the author’s impatience directly.
B. She showed the author her collection of works.
C. She taught the author advanced cutting skills.
D. She argued with the author about modern technology’s limitations.
14. How did the author improve her paper-cutting?
A. She learned from mass-produced patterns entirely.
B. She copied grandma’s old works repeatedly.
C. She combined computer design with hand-refining.
D. She attended a professional paper-cutting training.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards grandma?
A. Admiring and thankful. B. Indifferent and unconcerned.
C. Critical and dissatisfied. D. Doubtful and dismissive.

How to express hurt feelings
Expressing hurt feelings can be challenging, especially for teenagers. ____16____ Luckily, there are some simple techniques on how to effectively express your hurt feelings.
____17____ Before you approach someone to tell them that they’ve hurt your feelings, identify exactly why you feel hurt. It’s important to give a specific reason for your hurt feelings so that you can express this to the person who hurt you. If you’re unsure about why you feel hurt, review what happened in your mind or write about it.
Take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, take a few deep breaths in and out before speaking with the persons. ____18____ You may also find it hard to communicate what you’re feeling if you are overcome with emotions. If taking deep breaths doesn’t seem to help, try taking a brisk walk or doing push-ups. This will help to release endorphins (内啡肽) and clear your head.
Use “I” statements to communicate what you’re feeling. ____19____ Instead, express your feelings by using “I” rather than “you”. Explain the issue in an objective way. This will be less likely to put the person on the defensive. For example, you might say, “I felt hurt that I didn’t get a call to tell me you couldn’t make it yesterday.”
Listen carefully to the other person’s response. After you’ve expressed your hurt feelings, give the other person a chance to respond. Listen to what they have to say with your full attention. They might not have realized they hurt you, or they may have a different view on the situation. ____20____
A. Be specific in your description.
B. Think about what you’re feeling and why.
C. Avoid blaming the person for how you feel
D. You can express your feelings in a more reasonable way.
E. Having an open dialogue can lead to a better understanding and resolution
F. However, it’s important to communicate to maintain your emotional well-being.
G. Talking to them when you’re feeling angry, stressed, or tearful can make matters worse.

Today was the day for the picnic at Blackberry Farm! Arizona, her younger sister Ida, and their parents had been looking forward to it all week. Vivid images of rolling hills, friendly cows, and chasing chickens had filled the girls’ dreams.
“Ida, I baked cookies shaped like all the animals we might see!” Arizona announced proudly that morning, showing her sister the carefully decorated treats. There were horses, pigs, sheep, and even a few questionable-looking chickens.
“I want the horsey one!” little Ida exclaimed, jumping up and down.
“Not now, sweetie,” their mother said gently. “We’ll eat them at the picnic.”
After a final check, they piled into the car, laughter and chatter filling the space. They had driven for about twenty minutes when Arizona suddenly realized something.
“The cookies!” she cried out. “And the picnic blanket! They’re still on the kitchen table!”
The whole family let out a sound of disappointment. Dad sighed but made a U-turn. “No one wants a picnic without Arizona’s special cookies,” he said, trying to lighten the mood.
After getting the cookies, they hit the road again. Now running late, Dad made a decision. “I know a shortcut,” he declared, turning onto a narrow, unpaved road the family had never used before. “It should save us some time.”
Almost immediately, the smooth ride disappeared. The car bounced and shook violently on the stony path. A worrying clunk-clunk-thud started coming from underneath the car. Then, the engine died completely. Silence fell, broken only by Ida’s sobs.
Dad tried to restart the car, but in vain. He got out, looked underneath, and came back with a worried face. “We’re stuck.” A call to road service confirmed their fears: help was available, but the nearest roadside-service truck was two hours away. The two sisters sank back in their seats, their excitement replaced by a heavy cloud of disappointment. Their perfect picnic day was ruined.

During the visit, volunteers distributed illustrated handbooks and gave vivid demonstrations on how to handle common emergencies, such as accidental falls and choking. The seniors participated enthusiastically, practicing the techniques under the students’ patient guidance.
The event was well-received by the community. It not only provided the elderly with practical survival skills but also strengthened the bond between the young and the old.
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Just then, a wildflower field jumped into Dad’s sight. A brilliant idea struck him. “Why wait miserably in the car with everything for a picnic right here?” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Without hesitation, he began spreading the picnic blanket. Mom, following his lead, arranged Arizona’s animal cookies while singing cheerfully. The sisters, their initial sadness quickly disappearing, happily helped set up the feast. They were immersed in the beautiful scenery. With butterflies dancing around them, their disappointment was replaced by merry laughter.
