Zhang Hong lost his sight completely at the age of 21 because of an eye disease. For a long time, he felt sad and useless. But he didn’t give up. In 2021, he became Asia’s first blind person to climb Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak.
Zhang said the idea came from a conversation with a famous climber in 2015. He had heard about an American blind climber who reached the top of Qomolangma in 2001. Zhang decided to try it himself.
He trained very hard. Every day from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., he climbed more than 200 flights of stairs carrying 30 kilograms of weight. He practiced at high altitude in Tibet.
