Fight climate change while traveling
Whether you’re commuting or vacationing, travel can cause a lot of pollution, for most vehicles are powered by burning gas. As the pie chart illustrates, the transportation sector accounted for a major share of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. Tourism also contributes to climate pollution, with transportation making up the majority of tourism-related emissions.
But that doesn’t mean you have to stop traveling for fun altogether. You can make a difference by focusing on greener transportation options and fuel efficiency. ·Use Greener Transportation
Air travel emissions can be reduced by choosing direct flights or taking the train or a bus instead of flying. Even if a bus is gas-powered, it’s better for the climate than a car because it can transport many people with a single engine. If a car is the best option, consider replacing your traditional car with an electric or hybrid vehicle at the end of its life. (And drive the speed limit!). Clean energy helps avoid additional emissions.·Focus on Efficiency
If available, minimizes fuel use, saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Drive smart and improve your fuel economy by going easy on the brakes and gas and keeping your car well-maintained.

Kathy Johnston is so in love with chocolate; she lies awake at night thinking about it. But as chief chocolate officer of Dubai-based chocolatier Mirzam, that’s a healthy focus to have.
Like many other goods, most of Dubai’s chocolate has traditionally been imported, but Mirzam develops home-grown alternative. Johnston joined Mirzam in early 2016 after meeting the company’s founders, who persuaded her to work for them, rather than chasing her original dream of moving to Switzerland, chocolate capital of the world.
At first, the company’s plan was to mainly export its offerings to the U.S. while slowly building a market in the United Arab Emirates (阿联酋). But locals quickly accept the company’s unique chocolates, which are known for their Emirati flavors and spices (香料) such as cardamom, almonds and pistachios. That Mirzam works with local artists for its branding and packaging further strengthens its hometown reputation. Nearly as soon as Mirzam’s team opened their doors for tastings, the company sold out all its stock. “We didn’t expect such a strong response locally,” Johnston says. “We had no time to think about export.”
Born in New Zealand, Johnston moved to Dubai when she was 3 years old. Her love of chocolate goes all the way back to her childhood, when she would build ladders out of kitchen chairs to get her mother’s hidden chocolates. She recalls telling her grandfather that her dream was to have her own chocolate factory.
That dream has come true at Mirzam, where Johnston oversees everything from sourcing to production, packaging, and sales. But her true passion is coming up with innovative new sweets, with a focus on integrating traditional Emirati recipes into the company’s offerings.
Recipes like those have helped Mirzam grow at an amazing pace—it had doubled its production capacity every year since opening and increased its staff from one to 75 in five years. Now, Mirzam is still working on “producing amazing-quality chocolate,” Johnston says.
24.Why didn’t Johnston move to Switzerland?
A.She has an affection for chocolate.
B.She has a dream to import chocolate.

D.She was convinced by a chocolate company.
25.What make the company’s chocolates so popular?
A.Free tastings for new products. B.Unique flavors to the local taste.
C.Imported sources of high quality. D.Strong responses to the local market.
26.What can we learn about Johnston from the text?
A.She was brought up in New Zealand.
B.She owed her dream to her grandfather.
C.She works on opening overseas markets.
D.She takes pleasure in developing new products.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mirzam: Chocolate Sales Going Local
B.Johnston: “Sweet Dreams” Coming True
C.Cardamom: Emirati Recipes Catching On
D.Dubai: Home-based Businesses Taking Off

Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30,2018, 34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.
“It was - 20℃, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn't step up to help, no one likely would.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do,many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn't want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.
Payne's selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person, ” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers.“It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side. ”

A.Her husband's past experiences.
B.The requests from the homeless.
C.Her desire to become famous.
D.The coldness of local hotels.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

The list of potential victims of artificial intelligence is long. It includes every business, all software engineers, privacy and humanity itself. But some of its expected effects are more popular than others. Most people can agree, for example, that AI will be doing workers a great favour if it gets rid of grunt work, the sort of repetitive tasks that take up too much of everyone’s days. Filling out expense claims, copying and pasting things into spreadsheets, trying to resize one of those stupid boxes in PowerPoint—if people were able to leave this grunt work to machines, they could devote more attention to higher-value tasks.
Yet there is a case for keeping some of this grunt work. Repetitive tasks are not just mindless busywork. They can be a form of mental training, a way to build focus and discipline. They also provide a sense of small, regular wins that keep spirits high. Moreover, doing grunt work teaches you the nuts and bolts of a job, which make the whole system work smoothly. Skipping these steps can lead to ignorance of how things actually function, leaving you ill-equipped to solve real problems when they arise.
Consider a young doctor who skips taking patient histories to focus on high-tech diagnostics. They may miss hidden clues that only emerge from routine questioning. A software engineer who never debugs code by hand will struggle to understand why a program fails. A manager who offloads all administrative work will lose the hands-on insight required for good decisions. Grunt work is not a waste of time; it is an investment in competence.
Of course, not all grunt work is worth preserving. AI should eliminate the most soul-crushing, mind-numbing tasks that offer no learning value. But the line between useless busywork and valuable foundational practice is often unclear. The best approach is to use AI as a tool to reduce, not eliminate, grunt work. Let machines handle the worst of it, and keep the rest for humans to learn, grow, and stay grounded in the reality of their work.
32.Which is an example of grunt work?
A.Designing a new software.
B.Decoding a program failure.
C.Reading patient histories.
D.Making an innovative PowerPoint.
33.What does the underlined phrase “nuts and bolts” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Features. B.Fundamentals.
C.Details. D.Routines.
34.Which of the following statements might the author agree with?
A.AI should take over all grunt work in the workplace.
B.Proper grunt work helps improve basic working abilities.
C.Grunt work is meaningless and a waste of time and energy.
D.AI can’t really help handle repetitive daily work efficiently.
35.What might be the title of the passage?
A.Farewell, grunt work.
B.Hello, grunt work.
C.In place of grunt work.
D.In praise of grunt work.

Nowadays, statements like “Seeing is believing” or “I’ll believe it when I see it” are becoming less reasonable because of the deepfake videos generated by AI. 36 However, regardless of how advanced artificial intelligence may be, there are still certain tips that can point out the signs of deep-fake videos.
Observe Watermarked Content
37 However, this may not be effective in the long run because sometimes AI platforms allow users to download the generated content without the watermark. Thus, watermarking may not be a reliable way to detect AI videos.
Find Abnormal Body Language
Another way of detecting videos made from machine learning is the body language. 38 So if the body language is unnatural, then it may be generated by AI. An example of such body language that may be off is the character not blinking (眨眼) at all throughout the video.
Listen Closely
Audio is another means by which AI-generated content can be detected. But in recent times, that seems to have changed as synthetic (合成的) sounds tend to come out almost human-like. However, this doesn’t mean that it is entirely without problems. 39
While AI can avoid some of the above-listed giveaway features, it is impossible for it to be perfect. 40 Therefore, in this world of deep-fake videos, always feel free to question video content you see.
A.If a video appears natural and realistic, it is undoubtedly real.
B.AI usually find it difficult to accurately copy humans.
C.This is the most basic means by which AI-generated videos give themselves away.
D.This is because certain unnatural clues will still exist in its produced content.
E.Sometimes, you may notice people with six fingers or someone with two right arms and hands.
F.These videos have rapidly developed, making it more difficult to know when you can trust your eyes.
G.In some videos, incoherent sentences or background sounds can reveal their artificial nature.

Poetry uses language, sounds and imagery 56 (convey) thoughts and feelings. It has long been an essential art form across civilizations.
Classical Chinese poetry, 57 (compose) under strict rules of lines, characters, rhythm and rhyme, carries a unique artistic charm. Modern poets, however, have created free verse under Western 58 (guide), breaking traditional restrictions. The Tang Dynasty was 59 golden age of classical Chinese poetry. Li Bai, Du Fu and Wang Wei have gained worldwide fame, and their works 60 (admire) globally for centuries.
Chinese poetry has shaped world literature significantly. Thanks to translators like Ezra Pound, ancient Chinese poems have won international recognition, showing their 61 (influence) charm across cultures. Since the early 20th century, Chinese writers have introduced European literature into China. 62 (consequent), this exchange affected the development of modern Chinese poetry greatly. Poets such as Wordsworth and Shelley, 63 works are romantic and nature — focused, are deeply loved in China. Their styles bear striking similarities 64 those of Tang poets.
Nowadays, a growing number of people are fond of poetry, and 65 makes it so popular is that it bridges cross-cultural understanding between the East and the West.

The school sports meeting was in full swing. The most anticipated event, the 4x100-meter relay race, was about to start. Tim, a passionate and athletic student, was part of his class’s relay team. Along with his teammates—Mark, Jack and Alex, he had trained intensively for weeks, nurturing high hopes of winning the gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric as the runners took their positions. The starting gun fired, and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track. He smoothly handed the baton(接力棒)to Jack. Jack sprinted(冲刺)ahead with all his might, skillfully maintaining their lead. Then, it was Tim’s turn. As Jack approached at top speed, Tim reached out eagerly for the baton. But in his over-enthusiasm, he miscalculated the distance, and to his horror, the baton dropped to the ground. Time seemed to stand still as Tim stared at the baton, his heart pounding.
He quickly snatched it up and dashed forward, but the precious seconds lost had put them behind the other teams. Alex did his absolute best in the final leg, pushing himself to the limit, but they ultimately crossed the finish line in fourth place, narrowly missing out on the medals.
The disappointment on the team’s faces was obvious. Tim felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his shoulders. He couldn’t bring himself to look at his teammates, consumed by guilt. He replayed the moment of the dropped baton over and over in his mind, each time wishing he could turn back the clock. Mark, usually the most talkative, was silent, his eyes downcast(低垂的). Jack shook his head in frustration, muttering something under his breath. Alex just looked at the ground, his shoulders low. Without a word, they started walking back to the changing room, leaving Tim alone on the track, filled with self-blame.

C.She was attracted by the chocolate capital.
C.Cardamom: Emirati Recipes Catching On
D.Dubai: Home-based Businesses Taking Off
根据文章第二段内容“Johnston joined Mirzam in early 2016 after meeting the company’s founders, who persuaded her to work for them, rather than chasing her original dream of moving to Switzerland, chocolate capital of the world.(约翰斯顿在2016年初与Mirzam的创始人见面后加入了该公司,他说服她为他工作,而不是追逐她最初的梦想,搬到世界巧克力之都瑞士。)”
根据文章第三段内容“But locals quickly accept the company’s unique chocolates, which are known for their Emirati flavors and spices such as cardamom, almonds and pistachios.(但当地人很快就接受了该公司独特的巧克力,这种巧克力以阿联酋风味和小豆蔻、杏仁和开心果等香料而闻名。)”
根据文章第五段内容“But her true passion is coming up with innovative new sweets, with a focus on integrating traditional Emirati recipes into the company’s offerings.(但她真正的热情在于推出创新的新糖果,重点是将传统的阿联酋食谱融入公司的产品中。)”
通过阅读文章可知,文章首段内容“Kathy Johnston is so in love with chocolate; she lies awake at night thinking about it. But as chief chocolate officer of Dubai-based chocolatier Mirzam, that’s a healthy focus to have.(Kathy Johnston非常喜欢巧克力;她夜不能寐地想着这件事。但作为迪拜巧克力制造商Mirzam的首席巧克力官,这是一个合理的关注点。)”讲明了文章的核心主题,“Kathy Johnston”和“梦想职业——首席巧克力官”,并在后文详细讲述了她是如何得到这份工作,这份工作的意义以及她的工作职责。因此,选项B“Johnston: ‘Sweet Dreams’ Coming True(Johnston:“甜美的梦”成真)”贴合主旨。故选B项。

28.What does the underlined word “ that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Locals living on the street‘
B.The homeless freezing to death.
C.The extreme weather.
D.The shelter for the homeless.
29.How did Candice Payne help the homeless people?
A.By drawing public attention.
B.By giving them money directly.
C.By taking them to her own house.
D.By buying hotel rooms for them.
30.What may contribute to Payne’s nice act?
A.Her husband's past experiences.
B.The requests from the homeless.
C.Her desire to become famous.
D.The coldness of local hotels.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A Black Fighter Changes the World
B.A Woman’s Curiosity Brings a Reward
C.A Regular Woman Makes a Difference
D.A Couple's Brave Act Moves the Country
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中的“Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.”
根据倒数第二段中的“but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,”可知,Candice Payne是通过买下琥珀宾馆的房间的方式来帮助那些无家可归者的,故D项正确。
根据第四段中的“According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help”可知,Payne的丈夫曾有过露宿街头的经历,这让Payne了解无家可归者极需帮助,所以决定帮助他们,故A项正确。
D
根据第一段中“Filling out expense claims, copying and pasting things into spreadsheets, trying to resize one of those stupid boxes in PowerPoint—if people were able to leave this grunt work to machines, they could devote more attention to higher-value tasks.(填写费用报销单、将内容复制粘贴到电子表格中、尝试调整PowerPoint中那些愚蠢的方框的大小——如果人们能把这些重复性工作交给机器处理,他们就可以把更多的注意力放在更有价值的任务上)”以及第三段中“Consider a young doctor who skips taking patient histories to focus on high-tech diagnostics.(想想一个年轻的医生,他跳过询问病人病史,专注于高科技诊断)”可知,询问病史属于重复性的基础工作,是重复性工作的一个例子。
根据第二段中“doing grunt work teaches you the nuts and bolts of a job, which make the whole system work smoothly (做重复性工作能教会你工作的nuts and bolts,这些能让整个系统顺畅运转)”以及后文“Skipping these steps can lead to ignorance of how things actually function (跳过这些步骤会导致对事物实际运作方式的无知)”可推,nuts and bolts能让整个系统顺畅运转,如果不了解它,你将对事物实际运作方式一无所知。
根据第二段中“Repetitive tasks are not just mindless busywork. They can be a form of mental training, a way to build focus and discipline. They also provide a sense of small, regular wins that keep spirits high. Moreover, doing grunt work teaches you the nuts and bolts of a job, which make the whole system work smoothly.(重复性的任务不仅仅是无意识的忙碌工作。它们可以是一种心理训练,一种培养注意力和纪律性的方法。它们还能带来一种小小的、定期的胜利感,让人精神振奋。此外,做重复性工作可以教会你一项工作的基本原理,使整个系统顺利运转)”可知,作者认为是一种心理训练,一种培养注意力和纪律性的方法,可以教会你一项工作的基本原理,说明作者认为适当的重复性工作有助于提高基本工作能力。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“AI will be doing workers a great favour if it gets rid of grunt work (如果AI能消除重复性工作,它将为工人带来巨大的好处)”、第二段中“Yet there is a case for keeping some of this grunt work. (然而,保留一些重复性工作是有道理的)”、第三段中“Grunt work is not a waste of time; it is an investment in competence. (重复性工作不是浪费时间;它是对能力的投资)”和最后一段中“The best approach is to use AI as a tool to reduce, not eliminate, grunt work. Let machines handle the worst of it, and keep the rest for humans to learn, grow, and stay grounded in the reality of their work. (最好的方法是将人工智能作为一种工具来减少,而不是消除重复性的工作。让机器来处理最糟糕的工作,剩下的留给人类去学习、成长,并在工作的现实中保持脚踏实地)”可知,文章重点探讨了重复性工作的价值——它是一种基础训练,能帮助人们掌握工作的基本原理、培养专注力和纪律性,而非完全被AI取代。作者整体上是在为重复性工作辩护和赞扬。故“In praise of grunt work (赞扬重复性工作)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。
前文“Nowadays, statements like “Seeing is believing” or “I’ll believe it when I see it” are becoming less reasonable because of the deepfake videos generated by AI.(如今,诸如“眼见为实”或“我见了再说”这类说法正变得不再那么合理,这是因为人工智能生成了深度伪造视频。)”提到因为AI生成的深度伪造视频,“眼见为实”等说法变得不合理,F选项“These videos have rapidly developed, making it more difficult to know when you can trust your eyes.(这些视频发展迅速,使得我们更难知道什么时候可以相信自己的眼睛。)”
37.由小标题“Observe Watermarked Content(观察带水印的内容)”可知,此部分主要讲观察带水印的内容来识别AI生成视频,C选项“This is the most basic means by which AI-generated videos give themselves away.(这是人工智能生成的视频暴露自身的最基本方式。)”
39.前文“Audio is another means by which AI-generated content can be detected. But in recent times, that seems to have changed as synthetic (合成的) sounds tend to come out almost human-like. However, this doesn’t mean that it is entirely without problems.(音频也是检测人工智能生成内容的一种手段。但近年来,情况似乎有所改变,因为合成声音往往听起来几乎和人类声音一样。然而,这并不意味着它完全不存在问题。)”提到虽然合成声音几乎像人类声音,但并非完全没有问题,G选项“In some videos, incoherent sentences or background sounds can reveal their artificial nature.(在一些视频中,不连贯的语句或背景声音可以暴露出它们的人工属性。)”
40.前文“While AI can avoid some of the above-listed giveaway features, it is impossible for it to be perfect.(尽管人工智能能够规避上述列出的一些暴露特征,但它不可能做到尽善尽美。)”说AI无法避免上述列出的一些暴露特征,D选项“This is because certain unnatural clues will still exist in its produced content.(这是因为在它生成的内容中仍然会存在某些不自然的线索。)”

Dear Chris,
I’m glad to know you’re interested in traditional Chinese crafts.
Traditional Chinese crafts, which have been passed down for centuries, are not only cultural treasures but also a true reflection of the craftsman’s spirit. Take paper-cutting as an example. What makes it so impressive is that every single piece demands great patience and careful attention, which can only be gained through years of practice. With a pair of ordinary scissors, the artist carefully cuts the red paper, turning a plain sheet into a delicate work of art. Behind every beautiful design lies the artisan’s lifelong pursuit of perfection, a quality that is truly admirable. It is this dedication that gives the craft its lasting charm and teaches us to value quality over speed. Only by respecting and inheriting these traditions can we keep the flame of craftsmanship burning brightly for future generations.
I hope my introduction helps you feel the charm of Chinese craftsmanship. Looking forward to your thoughts!
Yours,
Li Jin

Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the failure. As he sat on the edge of the track, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He thought about all the hard work and dedication they had put into training, and how it had all seemed to be in vain because of his one moment of carelessness. He wondered if his teammates would ever forgive him, and if he would ever be able to make up for what he had done.
Just then, Mark, Jack, and Alex appeared. They walked up to Tim and sat down beside him. Mark placed a comforting hand on Tim’s shoulder and said, “Hey, it’s not your fault. These things happen. We’re a team, and we all make mistakes.” Jack nodded in agreement, adding, “We didn’t lose because of you. We lost because we didn’t work together well enough in that moment. Let’s learn from this and come back stronger next time.” Alex smiled and patted Tim on the back, saying, “We’re still proud of you, and we know you’ll do better next time. We’re in this together.”
