Nujiang, Yunnan Province, was once one of China’s poorest areas. Now thousands of people have moved from distant villages to towns with better houses, schools and health care. Roads that once took days to travel now take minutes, and the Internet reaches homes that once had no electricity.
The people of Nujiang still practice their traditions and customs even with great changes in the development of their area. Embroidery (刺绣), weaving (编织) and dance remain part of daily life. This connection of old and new is not accidental — it reflects an understanding that development does not mean abandoning traditions.
In a Lisu village, it’s very common to see a woman weaving textiles (纺织品) using skills passed down from her ancestors. The patterns and styles reflect their history, beliefs and connection to the land. These textiles are a very important part of their traditions, worn during festivals and ceremonies. ▲ These cultural practices are not old things of the past but living traditions that continue to develop in today’s world.
Tourism has become a main source of income (收入), with visitors drawn to Nujiang by its amazing natural views and lively culture. Local business owners have also found new ways to sell traditional handmade goods, creating jobs that both keep their special culture and provide income.
As China continues to modernize, it is necessary to protect and improve the cultural values. It means progress doesn’t come at the cost of cultural values. Nujiang offers a clear example. It shows that protecting traditional culture is not just about looking back, but also about shaping a future that honors the past.

These days, drones (无人机), also called UAVs, aren’t just cool high-tech tools for taking pictures. In the countryside, they’re becoming more and more important. They’re bringing new ways to help do difficult work and make big changes in farming and other country jobs.
One big use of them is in farming. Farmers can use drones to look over their fields. These drones have special cameras. They can fly up high and take pictures of the crops. Then, by looking at these pictures, farmers can tell if their crops have enough water, sunlight, or food. Instead of walking around the whole big field to check, they can use a drone to look at everything fast. In the past, older farmers used to carry oranges on their backs. It was hard work. Few young people are willing to do it. But now a farmer can use a drone to carry heavy things. It flies 200 meters in just 1 minute, while a man needs 30 minutes.
▲ . They can watch how the animals move and check whether they’re healthy or not. In big pastures (牧场), it’s really hard for farmers to watch all the animals all the time. Drones can easily get to faraway and hard-to-reach places. This helps look after farm animals well, so people’s lives and work can go on smoothly.
However, using drones in the countryside isn’t always easy. For example, there are strict regulations on drone flights in many places. Farmers have to make sure they fly their drones in the right way. Also, buying a good drone and all the things that go with it can be expensive for some farmers. But as technology gets better and the market gets more nature, these problems will probably be solved little by little.
16.How can farmers tell if their crops have problems according to paragraph 2?
A.By walking around the field to check.
B.By listening to the sound of the crops.
C.By looking at the pictures taken by drones.

C.Drones: Making Big Changes in the Countryside
D.Drones: A New Way of Taking Pictures

The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.
That didn’t stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.
Parbati Barua’s father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer (驯兽师). He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up—how to catch wild elephants.
Parbati hasn’t always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life. “Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase,” she says.
But Parbati doesn’t catch elephants just for fun. “My work,” she says, “is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man.” And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. “Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,” she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant pr incess indeed!
21.For Parbati, catching elephants is mainly to ________.
A.get long lasting excitement B.keep both man and elephants safe
C.send them back to the jungle D.make the angry elephants tame
22.Before Parbati studied in a boarding school, ________.
A.she spent her time hunting with her father B.she learned how to sing love songs
C.she had already been called an elephant princess D.she was taught how to hunt tigers
23.Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they revenge because ________.
A.they are caught and sent for heavy work
B.illegal hunters capture them and kill them
C.they are attacked (攻击) and their land gets limited (减少)
D.dogs often bar k at them and chase them
24.The passage starts with an elephant story in order to explain that in India ________.
A.people easily fall victim to elephants’ attacks
B.the man-elephant relationship is getting worse
C.elephant tamers are in short supply
D.dogs are as powerful as elephants
25.The underlined word “captured” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.
A.found B.caught C.attacked D.chased

“A wise old owl sat on an oak. The more he saw, the less he spoke, the more he heard. Why aren’t we like that old bird? ”—Edward H. Richards.
We all need to learn to listen well. Listening is a skill we should be practicing every day. And I mean active listening, not just listening when it is convenient to us. 26 . It’s a sign of respect. If someone listens to you carefully when you are talking, it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying. How do you practice listening? Here are some basic rules:
27 . Are you in the middle of writing something? Put down the pen and fold your hands. Are you reading something? Close it so that it will be impossible for you to look down and start reading again. Then put it down.
Turn off your computer. The computer will take your attention from your job at hand—listening.
Face the person you are speaking with. Facing the person you are talking with will help you focus completely on listening. 28 .
29 . Standing closer to the speaker will show interest. Crossing your arms in front of your chest shows disagreement. Looking around the room shows you have no interest. Looking the speaker in the eyes tells him that he is important.
Listen carefully. 30 . Do not just think about your reply in your mind. Pay attention to the speaker. Really listen to what he is telling you.
A.Take notes while listening

文章第一段通过对比怒江过去“once one of China’s poorest areas”、“once had no electricity”和现在“Now thousands of people have moved from distant villages to towns with better houses, schools and health care.”的状况,突出了变化之大,因此作者是通过对比差异来开始文章的。
12.第二段“This connection of old and new is not accidental — it reflects an understanding that development does not mean abandoning traditions.”表明,尽管该地区发展巨大,人们仍然实践传统习俗,这说明发展并不意味着“放弃”传统。单词“abandoning”意为抛弃、放弃,与Giving up意思相近。
13.空格前“These textiles are a very important part of their traditions, worn during festivals and ceremonies.”描述了传统的编织技艺,空格后“These cultural practices are not old things of the past but living traditions that continue to develop in today’s world.”指出这些文化习俗是“当今世界继续发展的活传统”。选项B“这些古老习俗未被遗忘,而是与现代生活相连”能够承上启下,符合段落逻辑。
14.第四段内容“creating jobs that both keep their special culture and provide income”表明,旅游业为当地创造了就业机会。
15.全文主要讲述了怒江地区在实现现代化发展的同时,成功地保护并延续了传统文化。最后一段“It shows that protecting traditional culture is not just about looking back, but also about shaping a future that honors the past.”指出进步不以牺牲文化为代价,C选项最全面地概括了这一主旨。

C
