During the Spring and Autumn period, there were many states. The State of Qi and the State of Chu were two of them. Qi used to be very strong, but as time went by, it became less powerful. As a result, the king of Qi sent Yanzi, a wise adviser, to visit Chu so that the two states could support each other.
The king of Chu knew Yanzi was very short, so he decided to create difficulties to Yanzi. When Yanzi arrived, the guard told him to enter the kingdom through the small gate. Yanzi knew that he was being made fun of, but he didn’t get angry. “Only a state of dogs will greet visitors with a gate for dogs. I’m visiting the State of Chu. This gate isn’t for me,” Yanzi said. Hearing his words, the guard had to let him enter through the main gate.
The king of Chu was unhappy with what Yanzi had done. “Why did Qi send you? Doesn’t the kingdom have anyone better?” the king tried another way.
“If Qi meets a great king, it’ll send the best ambassador (使臣). I’m the worst. That’s why I’m here,” Yanzi replied calmly. At this time, the guards brought a thief to the king. The thief was from Qi. “Ha! Yanzi, is Qi a state of thieves?” asked the king impolitely.
Yanzi replied, “The orange trees to the south of Huai River produce big and delicious fruit, while the orange trees to the north of Huai River produce small and sour fruit. The environment makes the fruit grow differently. In Qi, people are good and honest, but here, they steal. What made that person a thief here?”
Finally, the king looked at Yanzi and laughed, “I was wrong about you and your state!”
28. What is mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. The reason for Qi’s being weak. B. The main states in ancient times.

A. He took some dogs with him. B. He showed his anger to the guard.

30. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A. The king of Chu tried a few ways to support Qi.
B. The king of Chu tried to make fun of Yanzi again.
C. The king of Chu wanted to know more about Yanzi.
D. The king of Chu was surprised at the population of Qi.
31. How did Yanzi show the honesty of people in his state?
A. By doubting the thief was from his state. B. By showing the effect of the environment.
C. By listing the number of thieves in his state. D. By describing their hard work at growing oranges.
32. What lesson can we learn from Yanzi’s story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Many hands make light work.
C. You can’t judge a book by its cover. D. The appearance shows the inner mind.

Tariq Qaiser was trying to protect mangroves (红树林). The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city from climate disasters. He was driving a small boat through a lake near Karachi, Pakistan. The boat passed a pile of mangrove branches beside some stumps. The trees had been cut down illegally (非法地) for firewood. Qaiser shook his head. He recorded a video on his phone, planning to post it on social media later.
Karachi is home to 16 million people, and the city keeps growing. Developers want to clear the mangroves to make room for new buildings. “I don’t want to fight with the developers,” said Qaiser. “But I do want them to think about the future of this city.”
The city already has a hot climate, and the modern buildings and roads make it even hotter. “Mangroves are our natural air-conditioning and oxygen supply,” Qaiser said. “If you just increase the mangrove cover, Karachi’s next 30 years will be much better than if you cut down mangroves for building.”
Karachi’s mangroves are diminishing, but the number of trees is rising in other parts of Pakistan. With replanting efforts, the country has tripled (增加三倍) its mangrove coverage over the past 30 years. But what about Karachi’s mangroves?
Qaiser’s social media campaign (活动) may have worked, in a way. In February, a court in Karachi declared Karachi’s mangroves to be protected forests. But unforested parts remain unprotected, and developers want to build there. City officials say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in billions of dollars. They also suggest that some of that money could be used to plant mangroves elsewhere in Pakistan.
33. How does Tariq Qaiser help protect the mangroves?
A. By helping plant more and more trees.
B. By collecting branches of mangroves.
C. By hiding in a boat and fighting with developers.
D. By raising public focus on protecting mangroves.
34. Why were mangroves cut down in Karachi?
A. To get land for new buildings. B. To make money for new buildings.
C. To change the temperature of the city. D. To be prepared for the future of the city.
35. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The history of Karachi. B. The number of mangroves.
C. A good effect of mangroves. D. The following city plan of Karachi.
36. What does the underlined word “diminishing” mean?
A. Becoming lower in price. B. Becoming more in number.
C. Becoming fewer in number. D. Becoming higher in price.
37. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Few seem to support Qaiser’s idea.
B. Qaiser hasn’t achieved his goal completely.
C. More mangroves will be planted in Karachi.
D. The developers have to pay more to build in Karachi.
C
Dark matter (暗物质) is found throughout the universe, although you’ll never see it, no matter how hard you look. It neither produces nor reflects (反射) light, so human eyes and most scientific instruments can’t detect (测出) it. That makes it very hard to study. But here’s why it matters: Studies show the universe contains about five times as much dark matter as ordinary matter. Ordinary matter, which makes up the knowable part of the universe, includes you, your dog, the Earth, the Sun, stars, and planets.
Scientists detect dark matter the same way we know about other things we can’t see—by watching how they influence things we can see. We can’t see wind, for example, but we can feel it. Dark matter has gravity. Like ordinary matter, it pulls on everything around it.
Recently, some scientists created maps of dark matter. To make these maps, they used powerful telescopes (望远镜) to watch light coming from billions of light-years away. A light-year is the distance travelled by light in one year, about 24.6 million times the distance from the Earth to the Moon. One group used a telescope on a mountain in New Mexico, watching the sky for nine years.
By studying how this light changed direction as it travelled through space, scientists could map where dark matter was and what shape it had. Their work is like finding out the shape and thickness of a pair of eyeglasses by looking through them and seeing how they change the way the world looks.
One of the new maps shows an area of dark matter. To our eyes, this area appears more than 600 times larger than the full Moon in the sky. Another covers an area over a thousand times larger. But that’s just the beginning:The scientists want to do further studies to better understand those groups we can’t see and hope to study the whole sky in 10 years or so.
38. Why is dark matter difficult to study?
A. Dark matter is too far away to reach. B. Dark matter changes shape too quickly.
C. Dark matter can’t make or send back light. D. Dark matter moves too fast for telescopes to catch.
39. Why does the passage mention wind?
A. To show that wind is also hard to study.
B. To explain how we detect things we can’t see.
C. To compare the speed of wind and dark matter.
D. To say wind has the same gravity as dark matter.
40. How is studying dark matter like studying eyeglasses?
A. Both change the way light moves. B. Both are hard to study without light.
C. Both can be shaped by human effort. D. Both change the appearance of distant objects.
41. How do the scientists feel about the future of dark matter research?
A. Upset. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful.
42. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Why dark matter matters and how it works.
B. The tools scientists use to study dark matter.
C. What dark matter is and how scientists study it.
D. The differences between dark and ordinary matter.
