Niki was new to the school, and Vanessa had thought she was a snob (势利的人). That was mostly because Niki said little, and besides, that was the rumor (谣言) about her. But then, Niki left her notebook on the playground by accident, and Vanessa picked it up and returned it to her. Then the two girls started to talk, and they got to know each other. Now Vanessa knew that Niki wasn’t a snob, but she still didn’t understand why Niki wouldn’t talk to anyone. One day, Niki explained herself, “I don’t really know anyone here except you, and I’m kind of shy. I know everybody thinks I’m a snob, but I’m not. I just don’t know what to say to people.” Vanessa had an idea for helping Niki. “If my other friends get to know you,” she told Niki, “they’ll like you, too. So why don’t you sit with my friends and me at lunch tomorrow? Then everybody will see what you’re like.” Niki was very uncertain, but she was tired of everyone thinking she was a snob. So she agreed to have lunch with Vanessa and her friends. The next day, Vanessa and Niki waited in the dining hall for Vanessa’s other friends. Niki was nervous, but Vanessa said, “Don’t worry. Just be yourself. You’ll be fine.” At last, everyone else arrived. One of Vanessa’s friends took one look at Niki and asked, “Why are you sitting with the snob, Vanessa? Come on and eat with us.” Niki’s eyes filled with tears. Vanessa took a breath and then said, “I’m sitting with Niki because she’s my friend and she’s nice. Don’t judge (判断) people before you know them. How about finding out for yourself instead of believing every rumor you hear?” For a moment, everyone looked at each other. Then, very slowly, the other girls sat down at the table. At first, nobody said much, but soon, they started talking. By the time lunch was over, Niki realized that Vanessa was right—all she had to do was to be herself. And what everyone else needed to do was to stop believing rumors. 31.Why did people think Niki was a snob at first? A.Because she refused to share her notebook. B.Because she liked not to be noticed by others. C.Because she spread rumors about others. D.Because she seldom spoke and others believed the rumor. 32.How did Niki feel when she agreed to have lunch with Vanessa’s friends? A.Excited and confident. B.Angry but active. C.Uncertain but hopeful. D.Shy and worried. 33.What is the correct order of events? ①One of Vanessa’s friends called Niki a snob.        ②Vanessa returned Niki’s notebook. ③The girls talked and understood Niki.            ④Niki explained her shyness. A.②→①→④→③ B.④→②→③→① C.②→④→①→③ D.①→③→②→④ 34.What can we infer (推断) about Vanessa’s friends by the end of the story? A.They thought Vanessa was lying about Niki. B.They realized rumors were not always true. C.They decided to spread new rumors about Niki. D.They refused to accept Niki whatever Vanessa said. 35.What lesson can we learn from the text? A.Every dog has its day. B.Many hands make light work. C.Practice makes perfect. D.Don’t judge a book by its cover. Is there anybody you dislike? Well, maybe you don’t really dislike them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger (怒气) go, it can turn into bitterness (痛苦). Bitterness appears when we can’t forgive (原谅) someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing (指责) him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves. Bitterness cannot only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our relationships (关系) with friends and relatives. No one enjoys being around an angry person for very long. If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with (处理) it. Accept it Instead of trying to deny (否认) your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it. Don’t make excuses for it any more You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life. Forgive and forget it You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the others. Forget it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind. 36.Where does bitterness come from according to the passage? A.Our health problems like heart disease. B.Our relationships with friends and relatives. C.The anger that lives deep inside our mind. D.The person who says something hurtful. 37.What does the underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph mean? A.bitterness B.anger C.health D.excuse 38.Which is the best way to deal with the bitterness? A.Make the person who hurts us look bad. B.Hate the person who hurts us very often. C.Accept that you have the right to be angry. D.Forgive the person who hurts us and forget it. 39.What can we learn from the passage? A.We should enjoy bitterness when we are angry. B.Bitterness is good for our relationships with others. C.Denying anger helps us deal with bitterness better. D.Letting go of anger can improve our physical and mental health. 40.What does the writer want to tell us? A.How to stay away from others. B.How to deal with bitterness. C.How to accept the anger. D.How to forgive others. Can a machine think? Can a computer answer questions in a human-like way? How can you tell if you are talking to a computer? New computer programs called language models have been very good at copying people. These artificial intelligence (AI) programs analyze (分析) millions of sentences from books and websites to learn hidden patterns in language. It’s exciting to see AI making realistic sentences. But there are also problems with AI-made texts. People have used AI-made texts to cheat on tests. We wanted to learn more about AI. So we called up 4,600 participants (参与者) for a study. We told the participants that they were using a website where some people wrote their own biographies (传记), and some people used AI to write theirs. Each participant rated (评分) 16 texts, half of which were AI-made. They then rated each text on a 5-point scale (评分等级) from “definitely (确定) AI” to “definitely human”. The participants were largely unable to tell whether they were people-made or AI-made. Their answers were wrong about 49% of the time. We found that people were following a few rules of thumb (经验规则). When people saw a meaningless or repetitive (重复的) text, they were more likely to say it came from AI. Truly, an AI text was more likely to have these qualities. But some rules of thumb gave wrong answers! People thought bad grammar and unusual word choices appeared in an AI text, but they were actually more likely to come from human-made text. And when people saw contractions (like “don’t” or “won’t”), they thought it was a sign of a human writer, but actually, AI was more likely to use such words. These are often wrong, which means that people are likely to be cheated. A person sends emails to people pretending (假装) to be someone you believe in. The email might say, “Hi, I work for your bank! You need to log in and fix something in your account.” With AI, the person could make different emails to try to pretend one that’s very believable. There is a lot of useful information online, and a lot of fun things, too. But there are also a lot of ways to get in trouble. We can never know who is on the other side when talking to someone on the Internet—it may not even be a human! That’s why it’s important not to just rely on (依赖) your feeling, but check the website URL and author information. If something seems strange, tell your parents or a responsible adult about it! 41.The researchers did the study to find out ________. A.who can write biographies faster, human or AI B.whether AI can answer questions in a human-like way C.which biographies were better, the human-made or the AI-made D.whether we can tell the human-made biographies from the AI-made 42.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Answers. B.Websites. C.Biographies. D.Participants. 43.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Engineers are developing AI’s copying skills. B.The participants use a website to write their biographies. C.There are more wrong sentence structures in AI-made texts. D.AI-made texts are likely to choose the same words to express. 44.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage? A.To compare (比较) AI’s writing with humans’. B.To study the reasons of the popularity of AI use. C.To improve our judgment (判断) online in the age of AI. D.To discuss the main characteristics (特征) of AI-made writing. 45.From the passage, we can infer (推断) that ________. A.AI language models will replace human writers in the future B.people are becoming more and more skilled at using AI C.AI-made texts are completely the same as human-made ones D.being careful is necessary when dealing with online information 四、任务型阅读 阅读下面的短文,并根据所读内容,在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。(注意:每个空格只填一个单词) Lab-grown (实验室培育) meat is made by taking a small sample of cells (细胞样本) from a living animal. These cells are then grown in a lab and shaped into cuts of meat. The sale of this meat is OK in some countries, like the US, Singapore and Israel. Some people like it, while others are not sure. What do you think? Would you eat it? Yes! Some people think it’s cruel (残忍的) to kill animals for food, and many farmed animals are not treated well. This is not a problem for lab-grown meat. Also, the meat is safer to eat because it is made in a clean lab and has a smaller chance of harmful bacteria (细菌) spreading. What’s more, lab-grown meat is better for the environment. Farming animals causes about 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. When animals like cows eat and digest (消化) food, they release methane gas (释放甲烷气体). Animal waste also releases greenhouse gases when it breaks down these gases trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere and make the planet warmer. Lab-grown meat can help cut down this pollution. No! Lab-grown meat is new and not many people have eaten it yet. We don’t know what the long term influences will be. Besides, it might not be as good for the climate. As some people say, a study from the University of Oxford found that, in the long run, lab-grown meat might not be better for the environment than farmed animals. This is because growing the meat on a large scale (规模) uses a lot of energy. Lastly, lab-grown meat could harm farmers. If lab-grown meat becomes very popular, many farmers may have a hard time selling their farmed animals. In short, lab-grown meat has good and bad points. It’s good for animals and the environment. But there are still things we are not sure about. Maybe if we keep looking into it, we can solve its problems. Then it could be another everyday food that we all enjoy, doing no harm to animals or the environment. Would you eat lab-grown meat? An introduction to lab-grown meat   It comes from taking a small cell from a living animal and growing it in a lab.   Some countries 46 its sale.
