Zhangjiajie: The Real Avatar Mountains
Deep in Hunan Province, there is a magical place called Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is China’s first national forest park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site People call it “the real Avatar mountains” because the movie Avatar got ideas from here.
The park is famous for its more than 3,000 quartz sandstone pillars Some of them are over 200 meters tall. They look like huge stone trees growing towards the sky. Often, clouds and mist (云雾) wrap around the pillars, making the view look like a fairyland (仙境).
Visitors can take the Bailong Elevator to get a bird’s-eye view. It is the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, built right on the side of a cliff (悬崖). The ride takes only 1 minute and 58 seconds, but it gives you an amazing view.
Another popular place is the Glass Bridge on Tianmen Mountain. The bridge is made of glass, so you can see straight down to the valley 300 meters below. Walking on it is exciting and scary at the same time!

Rainforests are some of the most amazing places on Earth. They are full of life, with thousands of different plant and animal species. These thick forests are found in warm and wet areas near the equator.
The rainforest is like a huge, green world. The tall trees form a canopy (天蓬,顶棚), which is like a big roof high above the ground. Under this canopy, there are many smaller plants, vines, and flowers. The air is always humid, filled with the sounds of birds, insects, and animals.
Rainforests are very important for our planet. They are often called the “lungs of the Earth” because they absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This helps to keep the air clean and healthy for us to breathe.
Many animals live in the rainforest. Monkeys swing from tree to tree, colorful birds fly among the branches, and strange insects crawl on the leaves. There are also big cats like jaguars, which are excellent hunters.
However, rainforests are in danger. People are cutting down trees for wood, farming, and building. This is destroying the homes of many animals and plants. We need to protect the rainforests to keep our planet healthy.

36. What is the main threat to rainforests?

“I have no more wood for the fire. The lamb (羔羊) is only half cooked. Never mind! Instead of you Pinocchio, I’ll burn some other marionette (木偶). Hey, there! Officers!” Fire Eater said.
Then two wooden officers appeared with hats on their heads and swords (剑) in their hands. Fire Eater shouted at them loudly, “Take Harlequin, tie him and throw him on the fire. I want my lamb well done!”
Harlequin was so scared that his legs doubled up under him and he fell to the floor. When seeing that, Pinocchio threw himself at the feet of Fire Eater. He cried sadly and asked in a pitiful voice which could hardly be heard, “Have pity, I beg (乞求) of you, Sir!”
“There are no sirs here!”
“Have pity, your Excellency (阁下)!”
When he heard that, Fire Eater sat up very straight on his chair and suddenly became kind. He smiled proudly as he said to Pinocchio, “Well, what do you want from me now?”

Sun Jiarui’s father is a cook and owner of a farm restaurant in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Jiarui started to help with the housework when she was a little girl. When she was 8, she asked her dad to teach her to cook after school. Now she can cook more than 50 dishes, which is not easy — even for an adult. “It’s quite necessary for her to learn to cook because cooking can help her take good care of herself,” says Jiarui’s father.
Jiarui is well-known for cooking in her school. A new cooking course was set up for her by the school last term. Jiarui is a teacher in the cooking class and teaches her classmates to make simple dishes. The students were only a bit curious about cooking at first, but now, all of them find that cooking is really pleasant. “I think cooking is as important as learning and I hope more and more teenagers will enjoy cooking,” says Jiarui.
Sun Jiarui’s school is not the only one to open a cooking course in China. In fact, in September 2022, students from primary and middle schools in China found a new labour course in their school timetable, with at least one class every week. The new course has three kinds of tasks, including everyday chores (家务), productive labour (生产劳动) and volunteer work. Quite a lot of people welcome such courses.

A. work B. live C. survive D. stay

— But I’m afraid not _________ can answer it.
A. someone B. anyone C. everyone D. no one
根据“The question is easy.”

A. What B. What a C. How D. What an
【答案】A

5. —________ I take the magazine out of the reading room?
—I’m sorry you ________.
A. Could; couldn’t B. Must; couldn’t C. Will; can’t D. May; can’t

thousand千;thousands错误形式;thousand of错误形式;thousands of成千上万的。

根据下文“this watch was once…”
根据“ask sb. to do sth.” allowed“允许”、invited“邀请”、made“使”(make sb. do)搭配或语意不通。
根据下文“He had given it to her… imagined my grandfather wearing it”可知是祖父的,grandfather’s正确。

A. In cold and dry areas. B. In warm and wet areas near the equator.

“I beg for mercy for my poor friend, Harlequin, who has never done the least harm in his life.”
“There is no mercy here, Pinocchio. I have spared (饶恕) you. I will burn Harlequin instead of you. I am hungry and my dinner must be cooked.”
“In that case,” said Pinocchio proudly, as he stood up and threw away his cap, “my duty (责任) is clear. Come here, officers. Tie me up and throw me on the fire. No, it is not fair (公平的) for poor Harlequin, the best friend that I have in the world, to die instead of me!”
