A
Have you ever wanted to turn back time and fix a mistake? Maybe you’ve failed a test or said something hurtful. Everyone makes mistakes; the key is not to panic (恐慌). Remember, messing up is part of being human.
It’s natural to feel sad when you make a mistake. But mistakes actually help your brain learn and improve, so you can do better in the future. For example, if you fall off a bike, your brain quickly sends a warning signal to help you learn to be more careful next time.
Mistakes help you build resilience. For example, in a football match, players might make many mistakes. Instead of giving up, they often become more determined (坚定的) to improve. “Even when things aren’t going our way, we can still try to turn it around,” one player says. What seems like a bad experience now might even become a funny story later. If you feel embarrassed about a mistake in class, you could be sharing a joke about it soon.
To learn from mistakes, you need to face them bravely. Professor Pooja Agarwal says that even though it may seem strange to accept failure, this is actually a better way to move forward. After making a mistake, you might want to hide it. But if you hide it, you can’t understand why it happened, and you might repeat it. Instead of being too hard on yourself, you should be kind to yourself. This helps you stay calm and ready to learn. When you are calm, it’s easier to see what went wrong and find a better way next time. In this way, every mistake can help you move forward.

Does life sometimes seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times, for example, do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem”, or “I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. By adding this simple word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening.
I read about a school that has changed the way it marks its students’ exams. The school found out that the old “pass/fail” system wasn’t helping students’ motivation (积极性). If you passed, then great, but those students who didn’t pass often felt like failures. So now students who don’t pass the exams will not see a big red “F” on their papers — they see a “Not yet” instead. In that way, the students feel that they are on a journey. They haven't reached the end, but they know that they are going the right way.
This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”. People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying until they do. They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change. However, people who just focus on the failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”. These people are always worried about failure and are more likely to give up when things don’t go right. They don’t think that they are able to change. Clearly, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.
But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can train yourself to develop a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t or you haven’t and realize that you just can’t or haven’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before. It’s one small but very powerful word.
( ) 26. What can the word “yet” do according to the passage?
A. Make impossible things become impossible forever.
B. Change impossible things into possible ones.
C. Make students feel like failures.
D. Stop people from trying.
( ) 27. Why did the school change the way it marks students' exams?
A. Because the exams needed to be more difficult.
B. Because the students didn’t like the old system.
C. Because the old system didn’t help students’ motivation.
D. Because the school wanted to give students more pressure.
( ) 28. What does the underlined phrase “concentrate on” probably mean?
A. Look forward to. B. Get used to.
C. Pay attention to. D. Make a difference to.
( ) 29. According to the text, which of the following has a “growth mindset”?
A. Mary got the first prize in the competition. She was excited to tell her friends.

When the teacher asks if anyone can speak in front of the class, you lower your head. When you go to the restroom or dining hall, you always try to find someone to go with you because you are afraid of being seen alone. Is that you?
Well, many people have these kinds of experiences. They are feeling social anxiety (社交恐惧). People with social anxiety may easily communicate with intimate ones, like their family members and old friends. But meeting new friends and talking in public can make them very shy and nervous. A recent survey from China Daily showed that about 45 percent of the 1,560 interviewees (受访者) said they experienced social anxiety.
Stefan G. Hofmann, an expert from Boston University, the US, said that social anxiety is probably “a result of the fear that we will not be welcome”. For Chinese kids, there’s another reason for their anxiety. Shu Man from East China Jiaotong University said, “Most of them are the only child in their families, so they don’t have many chances to practice their social skills.”
But how to be social and improve your social skills? People can follow these methods. Firstly, work on yourself-worth. Stop thinking of things that make you down. Do your best to stop comparing yourself with others. Secondly, start smiling and use a welcoming body language. Remember to give others a hug when you meet them. Stop looking at your phone all the time. Lastly, just be yourself. Take every chance to hang out with new people and those you like. Don’t hide yourself in your own world.

A. By giving reasons. B. By giving examples.
C. By telling stories. D. By showing surveys.
( ) 32. What does the underlined word “intimate” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Polite. B. Quiet. C. Close. D. Humorous.

C. What social anxiety is. D. When social anxiety starts.
( ) 34. What should you do to be social and improve your social skills according to the text?
A. Read more books about social skills at home.

Jiang Zhaopeng, an 18-year-old student, faced a life-or-death test on Saturday—not in an exam hall, but in the backseat of a car, where he performed life-saving CPR on a classmate who went into a heart attack.
Jiang and his classmate were heading to take the spring college entrance exam when the emergency happened unexpectedly.
At about 8:10 a.m., the two got into a taxi to the testing site. Just a minute later, Jiang’s classmate fell onto his knee. “I thought he was just tired at first,” Jiang said. Dear Tina,
It’s normal to have problems in our daily life. I’m glad to give you my advice.
First, you should spend more time on your study instead of playing computer games. If you have some problems, you can ask your teachers or classmates for help. Secondly, why not sit down and communicate with your mother? You can ask her not to push you so hard and you can make an effort to study. Last but not least, you should use the Internet wisely even if it is useful. You have to make friends online carefully. You can’t leave more personal information on the Internet.
I hope things will be better for you soon.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

三、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)
A
Have you ever wanted to turn back time and fix a mistake?

B. Grace couldn’t learn English well. She felt disappointed and wanted to drop it.
C. Joe failed to pass the exam. He was sad and didn’t want to have another try.
D. Peter’s team lost the soccer game. They didn’t give up and kept practicing.
( ) 30. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Achieve Success B. Two Different Mindsets
C. Nothing Is Impossible D. The Power of “Yet”
C

But then the classmate began breathing with difficulty and kicking the front seat before suddenly going limp (瘫软). He soon stopped breathing.
Jiang remembered the first aid lessons from school. He quickly laid his classmate down and began CPR.
“Go to the hospital,” Jiang told the driver, Wang Tao. Wang called the local traffic police and sped to the hospital, running six red lights and arriving in just seven minutes—half the usual time.
Jiang didn’t tell his school about the whole thing until his classmate was safe with doctors. He then rushed to the exam site, but arrived too late to take the 9 a.m. Chinese language test.
Later, doctors said his classmate would be okay without any brain damage (损伤). “The first four minutes of CPR in the car were very important,” said doctors.
