When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true.
Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit’s foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”
People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole year of good luck!
26. Which is the oldest good luck tradition?
A. Carrying a rabbit’s foot.
B. Catching falling leaves.
C. Making a wish when seeing the shooting star.
27. How does the writer develop this passage?
A. By giving examples. B. By comparing facts. C. By giving numbers.
28. Why do the British people want to catch 12 falling leaves?
A. There are so many leaves to catch.
B. The leaves can bring them a lucky month.
C. They want to have a whole year of good luck.
29. Why does the writer mention the saying in paragraph 4?
A. To ask readers to protect rabbits.
B. To show the rabbit’s foot truly brings people good luck.
C. To ask people not to believe the symbol of good luck blindly.
30. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. To introduce scientific ways to get good luck.
B. To introduce strange traditions that bring good luck.
C. To show some animals can bring people good luck.

The boat’s owner showed up at the painter’s house the next day with a check (支票), far greater than the painting payment. “You’ve already given me the money, Sir!” said the surprised painter. “But it’s for repairing the hole in the boat.”
“But it was such a little service.” said the young man.
“My dear boy, you do not understand the meaning of your act. Let me tell you what happened.”
I forgot to tell you about the hole when I asked you to paint the boat. When I returned and discovered that my children had taken the boat for a fishing trip, not knowing about the hole. I called them again and again but couldn’t reach them. Imagine my great joy when I saw them return from their fishing trip. After that, I discovered that you had repaired the hole. You see, now, what you did? You protected my children’s lives! I can never pay enough for your kind act.”

Ella Dove’s first children’s book, How to Roller-Skate with One Leg, is an inspiring (激励的) and uplifting story that celebrates friendship, family and overcoming challenges. In the book we meet 12-year-old Maya Bright who has lost her leg after a road accident on her way to school. Dove is a writer and reporter who lost her right leg aged 25 following a running accident. During her recovery, Dove kept a diary about her experiences and decided that she wanted to help others through her writing and change people’s ideas about what it’s like to be an amputee (someone who has had an arm or leg cut off). Dove says, “I chose roller-skating as the activity that my character learns to do because it’s one of the things where you’d be like, you’ve got one leg, you can’t do that!”
In the story, we join Maya as she excitedly returns to school, only to discover that her best friend has ditched (抛弃) her for a new group of girls. “At that age you’re experiencing friendship struggles (挣扎), dilemmas, fitting in and learning who you truly are,” says Dove.
Maya finds a list that she made before her accident: On the list were the fun things she would like to experience…She’s still going to tick off all of them by her 13th birthday. Some goals are easy, but others—like learning how to roller-skate—are more difficult with an artificial leg. With the support of family and friends, Maya—who Dove describes as a “determined (坚定的) and fun” girl—finds a way to overcome her challenges. Dove hopes the book will inspire readers to try new things, believe in themselves and depend on their friendships when things get hard.
She says, “Whatever you’re going through, whether it’s moving to a new school or a huge thing like an accident I had, through difficult times there is always hope. It’s going to be OK.”

I took up baking (烘焙) when I was a twelve-year-old girl. At that time I was working on my school bakery project with my classmates. I tried a few times, but I wasn’t very successful. My parents advised me to learn from my grandmother who later gave me her recipe and instruction as well. After two years’ practice, I was able to make delicious bread. I have come to realize making bread means a lot to me although it takes a long time.
To make bread, others usually use quick-rise yeast (酵母), but I don’t. Every Saturday morning, after mixing proper amount of water with flour, sugar etc, I take time to wait for the dough to rise. This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.
Baking does require great patience. In my hands the dough is slowly growing. It’s becoming softer. I can feel the change, which connects me to something quite different from the modern way of living. To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience. It certainly takes more time than buying bread from a store, but I enjoy it.
I’ve stuck to my grandmother’s recipe without making any change. Now this tradition has continued for years. Sometimes, in order to fit it in, I have to change my schedule. But I have never considered giving it up.
By the time my children get home from school, the bread has been baked and cooled. They step into the house and the first thing they do is to take a deep breath of the warm, honeyed air. Maybe they will get as much from the baking as I do.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者从12岁开始向祖母学习烘焙,并在制作面包的过程中学会了放慢脚步、享受生活,她也希望孩子们能从中有所收获。
【56题详解】
根据文章第1段“I tried a few times, but I wasn’t very successful. My parents advised me to learn from my grandmother...(我尝试了几次,但不是很成功。我的父母建议我向我的祖母学习⋯⋯)”可知作者向祖母学习烘焙是因为自己尝试不成功且父母建议她这样做。故答案整合为Because she wasn’t successful and her parents advised her to do so.
【57题详解】
根据文章第2段“To make bread, others usually use quick-rise yeast, but I don’t.(做面包时,其他人通常使用快速发酵酵母,但我不用。)”可知作者做面包与别人的不同之处在于她不使用快速发酵酵母,因此答案是原文的直接信息。
【58题详解】
根据文章第3段“To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience.(对我来说,做面包是对我们便利文化的一种反抗。)”可知在作者看来,现代生活是一种便利的文化,答案直接提取原文信息。

【60题详解】
根据文章第2段“This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.(这是我放慢脚步、细嗅蔷薇的方式。)”以及第5段“Maybe they will get as much from the baking as I do.(也许他们会从烘焙中得到和我一样多的东西。)”可知作者希望孩子们也能像她一样通过烘焙学会放慢脚步,享受生活。故答案整合为To slow down and enjoy life.

【答案】
例文
Zero Waste Makes a Difference
“Zero waste” is a lifestyle that aims to make less rubbish and use everything around us in a smart way.
It is necessary for us to follow this lifestyle for two main reasons. First, the earth’s resources are limited, so we must save them for future generations. Second, too much waste causes serious pollution, which harms animals and plants.
As students, we can take small steps to help. For example, we should bring our own cloth bags when shopping instead of using plastic ones to reduce white pollution. Also, we can reuse old bottles as flower vases.
