Tornadoes are dangerous, but with some easy-to-find things, you can make your own mini-tornado that is much safer at home.
Tornado in bottle
What you need
How to perform the experiment (实验)
1. Use the funnel to fill about two thirds of a bottle with water, and add food coloring to see it better.
2. Connect both bottles using the connector.
3. Place the connected bottles on a hard surface. The empty bottle should be at the bottom. At first, the water can fall in small drops into the lower bottle. In a few seconds, it stops completely.
4. Move the connected bottles in a circular motion (圆周运动) for a few seconds.
5. After putting the bottles on the hard surface again, you can see the shape of a tornado appearing in the top bottle. And the water flows (流) continuously into the empty bottle.
Science behind it
When the bottles are still, the air pressure stops the water. When you spin the bottles, the water circles outwards, creating a tunnel (通道) in the center. Then the air goes up and the water rushes down like a tornado.
16. Why is food coloring used?
A. To cool the water down. B. To add fun to the experiment.
C. To make the water smell better. D. To help see the water more clearly.

18. Where is the text most probably taken from?

Katharina is a young woman from America. When she discovered a Chinese social media (社交媒体) platform, she didn’t expect to start an international search for a long-lost friend. But that’s exactly what happened.
Katharina began using the platform on January 15 and posted a video, saying, “I need all users of this app to help me find him. Simon, I miss you. I miss our friendship.”
Katharina’s story began years ago in a private school in Iowa, a state in America. A Chinese exchange student named Simon joined her class in the seventh grade. The two quickly became close friends.
Chinese users of the platform soon came to Katharina’s aid. Like experienced detectives (侦探), they asked her for a photo of Simon. They really seemed ready to solve any problem. Word spread quickly after Katharina shared a photo of Simon—a very unclear one, though. Then, just 22 hours later, something unbelievable happened. Simon himself appeared in the comments section (评论区) of Katharina’s video! “It’s me, Simon,” he wrote. “I never dreamed that I would reconnect with my good friend from so many years ago. Thank you all on the platform for your help.”
Katharina was over the moon. She happily posted another video, giving her warm thanks to the users of the platform. “You can always count on the speed of China!” joked one commenter. “When Chinese Internet users are on your side, any problem can be solved.”

Mount Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world, lies on the border between Nepal and China. Every year, thousands of people climb Mount Qomolangma to challenge themselves, but only the best climbers reach the top. Climbers must deal with thin air, high cliffs, and changeable weather.
Recently, the Nepali government announced an increase (提高) in the fee for Mount Qomolangma climbing permits (许可证) on the southern slope in Nepal. An officer noted the price had remained the same for about 10 years, so the government decided it was time to make a change.
This change can bring more money to the government. The country relies on the fees heavily for its development. However, this decision is not driven only by financial factors (经济因素) . In recent years, the environmental problems on Mount Qomolangma have become increasingly serious. More rubbish is left on the mountain, but its cleanup can be really difficult. And Mount Qomolangma is not good at cleaning itself.
The government hopes the extra revenue (额外收入) can be used to improve the natural environment of Mount Qomolangma. At the same time, it can be used to ensure climbers’ safety. The climbers should respect nature, follow the rules, and keep this great natural place beautiful. With these useful things done, the great wonder of the world will certainly become clean and safe.
23. Why is it difficult to climb Mount Qomolangma?

D. To deal with financial and environmental problems.
26. What does the writer feel about the future of Mount Qomolangma?
A. Angry. B. Unsure. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.

Have you ever had such an experience? You did some exercise the day before, and the next morning, even a small movement like sitting up in bed would cause muscle (肌肉) soreness. Now you want to exercise again, but you’re wondering: Can I still exercise when I’m so sore? Well, there is no exact answer; it depends.
Experts explain that soreness isn’t always bad. It’s normal to feel sore when you train hard or challenge your muscles in new ways. It is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS, 延迟性肌肉酸痛). It usually reaches the peak within 48 hours and goes away in 72 hours. It happens because hard or new exercises break down muscle tissue (组织). Then your body tries to repair it, which causes soreness. Don’t worry—this breakdown helps your muscles grow stronger during the repair process.
What you should pay attention to is just how sore you feel. Rick Richey, a sports medicine teacher, says, “If your soreness is mild (不严重的), it’s okay to exercise. You just need to go easier, like lifting lighter weights or running slower.”
However, if your soreness is more than a mild ache, take a break. “Your body is smart—it tells you to stop,” Richey says. What’s more, exercising with super-sore muscles isn’t helpful. Sore muscles are not able to produce as much force and usually get tired more quickly. Richey says serious soreness can prevent you from getting better, and it might even make you hurt yourself.
If you really want to exercise, work on the muscles that don’t ache. For example, if your arms ache, exercise your legs. “If you’re sore in one muscle, look for other parts of your body you can exercise,” Richey says.
27. Which graph (图表) can show the change about DOMS in 72 hours?
A. B. C. D.
28. What do we know about DOMS?
A. It is a kind of terrible illness. B. It makes your muscles weak forever.
C. It usually appears later after exercise. D. It happens only when you lift heavy things.
29. Why is it not helpful to exercise with super-sore muscles?
A. Because they may never get better. B. Because they will get tired faster.
C. Because they can produce more force. D. Because they will influence your sleep.
30. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain what causes DOMS.
B. To discuss whether to exercise with sore muscles.
C. To tell readers how to repair sore muscles quickly.
D. To introduce different ways to challenge your muscles.

【原文】I’m Alice. I didn’t like poems until my Chinese teacher introduced me to a simple poem. That was my first time reading a poem. Since then, I have been in love with reading poems. I have read more than 200 poems about buildings, nature, family, and so on. On a rainy afternoon, I read a poem called “Mum’s Hands”. It describes how a mother’s hands make hot soup and wash clothes, and it made me think of my mum. She always takes good care of me. She used to encourage me to write a poem about my pet dog. That poem was not perfect, but it was fun. Now every morning before class, I read poems in the school garden. The hobby makes my life more colorful.

17. Which picture shows the fourth step?

【答案】27. D 28. C 29. B 30. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍DOMS(延迟性肌肉酸痛)的成因、疼痛变化规律,并且分情况探讨肌肉酸痛时是否可以继续锻炼。
【27题详解】
第二段写明变化规律:“It usually reaches the peak within 48 hours and goes away in 72 hours”,说明DOMS在48小时达到峰值、72小时逐渐消退,对应图像先上升至48小时高点再下降。
【28题详解】
第二段介绍DOMS:“It usually reaches the peak within 48 hours and goes away in 72 hours...It happens because hard or new exercises break down muscle tissue”,说明DOMS常在运动过后延后出现。
【29题详解】
第四段给出细节:“Sore muscles are not able to produce as much force and usually get tired more quickly”,说明酸痛肌肉更容易疲惫,因此剧烈酸痛时继续锻炼没有益处。
【30题详解】
首尾段落围绕核心疑问“Can I still exercise when I’m so sore?”展开,全文讨论肌肉酸痛时能否锻炼。
