Engineers from MIT and China are working on a project to turn seawater into drinking water. They are using a special device inspired by the ocean and powered by the sun.
The team of scientists wrote about a new invention in a scientific journal called Joule. They are developing a system that uses sunlight to clean seawater and make it safe to drink.
The device’s special design makes the water move in swirling patterns (呈漩涡状), like how it moves in the ocean. The sunlight heats up the water and makes it evaporate (蒸发), leaving the salt behind. The vapor then turns back into water and becomes safe to drink. The salt is continuously washed away so it doesn’t cause any problems.
The engineers project (预计) that when they make this system the size of a small suitcase, it can produce about 4 to 6 liters of drinking water per hour. It will work for many years before needing repairs or new parts. With its size and effectiveness (有效性), this system could provide drinking water that is cheaper than tap water.
Zhang Lenan, a research scientist at MIT’s Device Research Laboratory, says, “We are really excited because, for the first time ever, we have a chance to make water using only sunlight, and it could be cheaper than regular tap water.”
9. The special device can turn seawater into drinking water by ________.
A. the solar energy B. the wind C. the seawater itself D. other devices
10. What does the third paragraph tell us?
A. How the device makes water swirl like the ocean.
B. How the device changes seawater into drinking water.
C. How the device leaves salt behind.
D. How the device washes away salt.
11. What’s the purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A. To tell us the device is the size of a small suitcase.
B. To tell us the device will be practical and long-lasting.
C. To tell us the device will play an important role.
D. To tell us the device can help produce tap water.
12. What does Zhang Lenan think of making water using only sunlight?
A. It will make the sea have less water.
B. It will be as cheap as regular tap water.
C. It will make people no longer short of water.
D. It will have a bright future.
D
During this year’s May Day holiday, the short drama series Enemy became an online hit. Its sixth episode (集), which tells the story of two Peking Opera singers known as the “Pear Blossom Twins” (梨园双生), was especially praised by China Central Television (CCTV) for its moving story.

The two singers acted as if they agreed. But they had a secret plan. During a special show for the enemy officers, they put poison (毒药) in the wine the enemies were going to drink.
At the most important moment of the performance, Xiangkou changed the words and said to Qiaotou: “Today, we two as husband and wife.” Together, they drank the poisoned wine. Fires rose on the stage, and they sang to the end.

Public places are for everyone to enjoy, but some people seem to think that they are the only ones who matter (要紧). They behave (表现) in ways that are not only impolite, but also disrespectful.
One of the most common examples of this is when people use their phones in cinemas or theaters. Not only does this disturb (打扰) other people, but it also shows a lack of respect for the performers or the film makers.
Another example is when people play loud music on public transport. It is bad enough when they do this through their headphones, but when they play it out loud on their phone, it makes everyone else uncomfortable. There are signs everywhere telling people to be quiet, but they lose sight of them.
The last example is when people take off their shoes in public. It’s OK to take your shoes off only if you’re uncomfortable. If you take your shoes off and your feet smell, that’s not nice for other people!
I am not a person who likes to tell others how to behave, but I have to say that I am worried about such behavior in public today. I think we all should be more polite.
41. How many examples of disrespectful behavior has the writer mentioned?
____________________________________________________
42. Where do people use their phones in a bad way?

43. When is it OK to take off your shoes in public?

Hello, everyone! Today I am very glad to share my ideas about saving water. As we all know, water is important to all living things. We cannot live without water. It is needed for drinking, cooking, cleaning and growing food.
However, in our daily life, there are many wasteful habits. Some people leave the tap running while brushing their teeth and take very long showers. To save water, we can do the following things. First, turn off the tap when we don’t need water. Second, we can reuse water. We can use the water from washing rice to water plants.
Every drop of water matters. Start from ourselves, from small things around us.
Thanks for listening.
