Whenever he had to speak in front of others, his heart would race and his palms would sweat. In Grade 9, his English teacher, Mrs. Foster, announced a storytelling contest with the theme “Courage in Our Lives.” Leo’s stomach tightened, and he felt like running away. After class, his best friend Maya noticed his worry. She gently encouraged him, “Why not tell the story of your grandpa? He never gave up, even when illness took away his sight, and later he became a respected painter.” Leo’s eyes lit up. His grandpa had always been his hero. That night, Leo sat by the window, recalling grandpa’s firm voice: “Fear is a paper tiger—it looks scary but cannot truly hurt you if you face it.” For a whole week, Leo practiced in front of a mirror every evening. At first, his voice trembled (颤抖) and he often forgot words. But he kept going. On the day of the contest, Leo walked onto the stage. With a deep breath he began: “My grandpa taught me that courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward despite it.” Slowly, his voice grew steady (沉稳) and powerful. When he finished, the audience burst into warm applause. Leo did not win first place that day, but he earned something more valuable—lasting confidence. Since then, he has volunteered to host school events and joined the debate club. The experience changed his life, proving that growth happens when we dare to step out of our comfort zones. 11. Why did Leo feel scared about the storytelling contest? A. He had no interesting story to tell. B. He was afraid of speaking in public. C. Mrs. Foster was very strict with him. D. He didn’t like the theme “Courage”. 12. Who gave Leo the idea for his story about courage? A. Mrs. Foster. B. His father. C. His grandpa. D. Maya. 13. What did Leo’s grandpa say about fear according to the passage? A. Fear never truly goes away. B. Fear is a paper tiger. C. Fear helps us become stronger. D. Fear is a natural feeling. 14. What did Leo gain from the storytelling contest? A. A new best friend. B. First-place prize. C. Lasting confidence. D. A cash reward. 15. How does the writer organize the story and what lesson does it mainly teach? A. By comparing different contests; winning is everything. B. In time order from problem to solution; stepping out of comfort zone leads to growth. C. By listing grandpa’s achievements; friends are the most important. D. With flashbacks (倒述) only; storytelling is easy for everyone. B The subway train arrives at People’s Square Station during the morning rush hour. The doors open, and you head for the escalators. You keep to the left and walk up the stairs, thinking you’ll save valuable seconds and get a little exercise. But experts have an agreement on this: You’re doing it wrong. Although you might get a small advantage, it comes at the cost of other people’s time and safety. Getting on an escalator two at a time and standing side by side is a better way. It is reported that escalator companies have long advised against walking on escalators for safety reasons. Passengers should get on, hold on to the handrail (扶手) and stay careful. And it can actually save time if all passengers stand two by two on escalators. In 2016, the London Underground ran an experiment at its busy Holborn Station. Some of the station’s escalators are 23 meters high. There were always long lines at the bottom, while much of the left side was unused. The researchers found that when 40% of the escalator passengers walked, the average time for the standers to get to the top floor was 138 seconds. For the walkers, it was 46 seconds. When everyone stood, the average time dropped to 59 seconds. For the walkers, that meant losing 13 seconds. But for the standers, it was a 79-second improvement. So, everyone should stand on escalators and don’t walk, right? Yeah, but it takes a lot of luck for that to happen. Sam Schwartz used to be a New York City’s traffic policeman. “In the U.S., at least, self-interest guides our behavior everywhere,” he said. “You can’t just tell people that everybody gets advantages if they all stand on the escalator and expect them to change their behavior.” 16. Why does the writer mention “People’s Square Station” at the beginning? A. To describe the escalators. B. To express care for the passengers. C. To introduce the rush hour of the station. D. To show a situation of walking on the escalators. 17. According to the experts, what is the right way when you board an escalator? A. Keep to the left. B. Walk up the stairs. C. Stand side by side. D. Hold on to the two handrails. 18. Considering all the escalator passengers, what can we learn from the experiment at Holborn Station? A. There is no difference between walking and standing. B. It can save 59 seconds for standers when everyone stands. C. Standing on the escalator can save more time than walking. D. Walking on the escalator moves more quickly than standing. 19. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. We should try to walk on the escalator. B. It’s unlucky to see people walk on the escalator. C. Standing on the escalator is sometimes bad for us. D. It’s hard to ask all Americans to stand on the escalator. 20. What is the best title for the passage? A. How to Keep Safe on Escalators B. Should we walk or stand on escalators? C. The History of London Underground Experiment D. How to Save Time During the Morning Rush Hour C Bowhead whales can live 200 years or longer. How they do it is no longer among the secrets of the deep. Scientists have mapped the genetic code (遗传密码) of this long-lived whale species. The international effort found unusual features in the Arctic whale’s genes. Those features likely protect the species (物种) against cancer and other problems related to old age. The researchers hope their findings will one day translate into ways to help people too. “We hope to learn what is the secret of bowhead whales living longer, healthier lives,” says Joao Pedru de Magalhes. He is a gerontologist at the University of Liverpool in England. (Gerontology is the scientific study of old age.) His team hopes that its new findings might one day be used to improve human health and preserve human life. No other mammals are known to live as long as the bowhead whales. Scientists have shown that some of these whales have lived well beyond 100—including one that survived to 216. That’s to say, if he were still alive, Abraham Lincoln would be turning just 211 this year. Dr. Magalhäes’ team wanted to understand how the bowhead can live so long. To find out this, the experts analyzed the animal’s complete set of genes, called its genome (基因组). The team also compared the whale’s genome to that of people, mice and cows. The scientists discovered differences, including mutations (突变), in the whale’s genes. Those changes are linked to cancer, aging and cell growth. The results suggest that the whales are better than humans at repairing their DNA. That’s important because flawed DNA can lead to disease, including some cancers. Bowhead whales are also better at keeping abnormally dividing cells in check. Together, the changes appear to allow bowhead whales to live longer without developing age related diseases such as cancer, said Magalhäes. 21. What is the ultimate (最终的) goal of the scientists’ study of the bowhead whales? A. To find out why bowhead whales can survive in the Arctic Ocean. B. To prove that bowhead whales can live 200 years or longer. C. To understand how bowhead whales avoid cancer and aging-related problems. D. To find ways that could one day help humans live longer and healthier. 22. What does the example of Lincoln in paragraph 3 show? A. Lincoln should have lived much longer. B. The lifetime of bowhead whales is very long. C. Lincoln died of cancer. D. Their study unlocked the secret of Lincoln’s death. 23. What contributes to the long life of the bowhead whale according to the study? A. It faces little danger in its life. B. Its DNA has a strong ability to self-repair. C. It has a complete set of genetic instructions. D. Its living environment is better than that of humans. 24. What is true according to the passage? A. The changes in bowhead whale’s genes are related to cancer, aging and cell growth. B. The bowhead is the animal which lives the longest. C. Scientists have found new long-living DNA in bowhead whales. D. Scientists have found ways to treat human diseases. 25. What does the underlined word “flawed” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Changed. B. Lost. C. Damaged. D. Repaired. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分) 阅读下面短文,并从方框里的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。 There are many reasons why people study history. ____26____ History can also provide us with a guide to making better decisions in the future.
