Building with 3D printing technology is sparking widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. To see how the technology can change the world around us, here are some projects that highlight bold ideas in 3D print building.
Instant Neighborhood
Community building takes on new meaning with the creation of a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Tabasco, Mexico, aimed at tackling global homelessness. American non-profit New Story and tech company ICON built each concrete house from start to completion in 44 hours. New Story says its aim is to provide shelter for people without homes around the world.
Nested Housing
Shamballa is the idea of Italian 3D print construction company WASP. This project uses soil and straw to build a home in days that cost only 48 Euros in materials and energy. Its round designs are based on the wasp(黄蜂)nest. Each home features a laboratory with a desktop 3D printer for making furniture, artistic objects and more.
Think Schools
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world’s most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D print technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete in under a week.
Concrete Steps
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16 metre long curved Striatus footbridge in a couple of days. The project used500 layers of concrete and53 hollow blocks, held in place by compression(压缩). This reduces materials by up to 70 percent, and the entire bridge can be pulled down and recycled.

Last year, Brazilian cyclist Marcos Santos was at the best time of his career (事业). He had just won a major regional race and was eyeing the national championships. But a motorcycle accident changed everything. The 44-year-old almost lost his left leg, leaving him unable to walk, let alone ride a bike. Doctors said his cycling career might have to come to an end.
Marcos, who was studying sports science at the University of São Paulo, was heartbroken. For the first several days, he lay in the hospital bed and thought about how to deal with the rest of his life. In the end, he chose not to give in. With the support of his family and coaches, he began a long and hard process. Every day, he received physical treatment, relearning basic movements. “It was the darkest time of my life,” he said.
Slowly, Marcos made progress. He found adaptive cycling, which uses specially designed bikes for disabled (残疾的) athletes. With a newfound hope, he combined his study with intense training on his adapted bike. His professors encouraged him, providing flexible study schedules so he could focus on recovery and training.
There were days when pain made training unbearable, and self-doubt threatened to beat him. But he pushed through, inspired by his love for the sport.
Coach Oliveira, who had trained Marcos for years, was amazed by his performance. “Marcos proves that if you have the courage to keep going, nothing is impossible,” he stated.
This year, Marcos made a remarkable comeback at the South American Adaptive Cycling Championships. Though he didn’t win, his presence on track was a victory in itself. “I’m hack the bike, that’s all that matter. If my story can give hope to others facing similar problems, that would mean everything,” Marcos shared.
24.What happened to Marcos last year?
A.He suffered serious leg injuries.
B.He took a totally different career path.
C.He performed worse than expected.
D.He won the national cycling championship.
25.How did Marcos originally react to his injury?

C.To test the limits of adaptive cycling technology.
D.To inspire others to face their challenges bravely.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Marcos?
A.Creative and confident. B.Energetic and careful.

NASA’s Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon by the mid-4040s, including the first woman and the next man. Unlike the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, which focused on short stays, Artemis plans to establish a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface. The Gateway — a small space station orbiting the Moon — will serve as a hub for astronauts traveling to and from the lunar surface and deeper space.
One of the key goals is to explore the Moon’s south pole, where scientists believe there may be frozen water in permanently shadowed craters (坑). This water could be used for drinking, growing food, and even producing rocket fuel. Additionally, the lunar surface offers a unique environment for testing technologies needed for future missions to Mars and beyond. The low gravity (重力) — and lack of atmosphere make it an ideal place to test new spacecraft, life support systems, and radiation shielding.
Critics argue that the cost of such programs is too high, with billions of dollars spent on space exploration while many issues on Earth remain unsolved. However, supporters point out that space research has led to numerous technological advancements that benefit daily life, such as GPS, medical imaging, and improved water purification systems. They also believe that expanding humanity’s presence in space is essential for the long-term survival of our species.
28.What is the main difference between the Artemis program and the Apollo missions?
A.Artemis will send more astronauts to the Moon.
B.Artemis plans for long-term human presence on the Moon.
C.Artemis focuses on scientific experiments rather than exploration.
D.Artemis aims to land on the Moon’s far side.
29.Why is the Moon’s south pole a key exploration target?
A.It has the most favorable landing conditions.
B.It may contain frozen water which is highly valuable.
C.It is the closest area to Earth on the Moon.
D.It has been unexplored by previous missions.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards space exploration?
A.Critical of its high costs. B.Doubtful about its practical benefits.
C.Supportive of its long-term value. D.Neutral without personal opinion.
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The Artemis program will be completed by 4045.
B.Water on the Moon has already been confirmed.
C.Space technologies often have practical Earth applications.
D.Mars will be the next target after the Apollo missions.
D
Imagine walking through a garden after sunset. We don’t need to turn the outdoor lights on; the space is already lit by a soft glow (微光) from common houseplants along the path. Now, researchers have taken a step toward making that scene a reality.
A team of scientists at South China Agricultural University has managed to create succulents (多肉植物) that glow in the dark. They injected the plants with strontium aluminate (铝酸锶), the same material used in glow-in-the-dark stars children sometimes stick to their bedroom ceilings. This material can naturally absorb sunlight or LED light and release it slowly and steadily. Moreover, they found that the succulents can glow in multiple different colors, forming a rainbow of lights — even in the same succulent.
The scientists experimented with various plants, including bok choy and golden pothos, but found that succulents were uniquely suitable. They produced a strong glow due to their leaves’ thin, uniform, and evenly distributed channels, which enabled the large particles to spread more successfully. The researchers even constructed a glowing wall with 56 succulent plants, which could light nearby objects and even enable them to read a text.
After being recharged, each succulent glowed for about two hours. However, their glow diminished overtime. So, the next step is to improve the longevity of the plants’ glow. The researchers also note that the impact of the injected particles on the plants’ long-term health is still unclear, so further safety testing will be required.
“In the world of Avatar, glowing plants light up an entire ecosystem. We want to make that vision possible using materials we already work with in the lab,” says Shuting Liu, first author of the research. The team hopes their work, which is still in the early phases, will one day pave the way for a novel sustainable lighting system. “Imagine glowing trees replacing streetlights,” Liu adds.
32.What do we know about the glow-in-the-dark succulents?
A.They can change into different colors. B.They can recharge with exposure to light.
C.They rely mainly on sunlight for energy. D.They need to be planted in special soil
33.What made succulents perform better than other plants in the experiment?
A.Their unique leaf structures. B.Their strong root systems.
C.Their ability to absorb light. D.Their resistance to chemicals.
34.What does the underlined word “diminished” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.appeared. B.remained. C.brightened. D.weakened
35.What can we expect of the new lighting technology?
A.It will provide a sustainable lighting solution. B.It will become affordable for most people.
C.It will be applied in various fields soon. D.It will revolutionize traditional lighting systems.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

【听力材料】W: This year, I booked a tour to the Faroe Islands and our guide gave us some facts before the visit. The Faroe Islands are located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Norway and Iceland, although their nearest neighbor is in fact Scotland. For many years, there’s been an airport on the main island, and a helicopter service between the islands. These days, there’re road tunnels to connect several islands. You definitely don’t go to the Faroe Islands for sunshine — it rains over 260 days a year. On our first day, we were meant to go on a boat trip to spot seabirds, but the wind was too strong, making this impossible. Instead, we went to another island and walked to a lighthouse for incredible views. While we were walking along the narrow paths, our guide told us that in 2019, the island was shut to tourists for a few days because volunteers helped to repair paths and put up signs to mark routes, and many of them stayed with local people in their homes. I wished I’d been part of that experience!

67.【答案】Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood.
