Elizabeth S.Scordato earned an undergraduate degree in biology from North Carolina's Duke
University in 2004.After graduation she continued to work with one of her professors in the biology
department,Christine M.Drea.Their project investigated the smell-marking behavior of the ring-tailed
lemur )Her first academic paper, coauthored with Drea, was published in 2007 in the journal Animal
Behavior.
In 2012,Scordato began working on a postdoctoral project at the University of Colorado at Boulder
with Rebecca Safran. She traveled across Asia catching bamn swallows,a common species of bird that is at
the early stages of speciation.Barn swallows show wide variation across their geographical ranges.By
analyzing the genetics of thousands of barn swallows,Scordato and her team showed that differences in
feather color and migratory behavior keep different populations from breeding (with one another. This
is another key step toward the formation of new species.
In 2018,Scordato joined the staff of California State Polytechnic University in Pomona,California.
Her first major project involves the Pacific swallow.Like the bamn swallow, the Pacific swallow has shown a
remarkable ability to adapt to changes in its environment. In particular,Pacific swallows build their nests on
man-made structures, which has enabled them to survive around human settlements.Scordato is now
studying how the spread of human settlements and structures throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania has
shaped the genetic evolution (of Pacific swallows.
Traveling around the world to study birds is an adventure, but it is also hard work."Once, when I was
leaving for a challenging field season in India,my mother asked me 'Why can't you ever do anything the
easy way?"Scordato wrote."I told her the meaning for doing something the hard way is well worth the
struggle:you get the excitement of leamning something new about the natural world that no one has ever
understood before, and you also know that you really earned that discovery."
24.What did Scordato do after graduation?
A.She taught biology in a university.
B.She worked on a research project.
C.She travelled all over the world.
D.She volunteered to help animals.
25.What did Scordato study about the barn swallows?
A.The breeding of the species.
B.Their ways of building their nests.
C.The decrease in number of the species.
D.Their adaptation to environmental changes.
26.What can be inferred from Scordato's study of the Pacific swallow?
A.Human activities have great impacts on animals
B.It's vital for humans to protect the environment.
C.Animals'survival mostly depends on our effoits
D.Some species can change with the environment.
27.What does Scordato think of her job?
A.Demanding.
B.Tiresome.
C.Rewarding.
D.Annoying

Drones (already fly and spy. Now,they can build too.A pair of drones working together made
a tower taller than a person.Engineers demonstrated this new method of 3D printing in the lab.Mirko
Kovac,who co-led the research,says that animal builders,bees,inspired him.They shared their success in
Nature on September 22.
To print that person-sized tower,a Build-Drone caried expanding foam ()This material rapidly
expands and hardens when sprayed ()The drone flew in a slow circle, spraying the foam downwards
to form layers. When it ran out of material,it flew away so a person could reload it with more foam or
replace the drone's batteries. This type of foam tends to thicken unevenly. So,while a Build-Drone was
being reloaded,a second, smaller drone surveyed the work.It was called Scan-Drone.It looked for places
where the last layer was too thin or thick. Then it created a plan for the next layer to help even things out.
This kept the tower straight and strong.
"This was an impressive demonstration,"says Andrea Tagliabue, who wasn't involved in the research.
As a graduate student in robotics at MIT,Tagliabue works on control systems for drones. However,he notes
that the researchers still have challenges left to solve before 3D printing drones are useful in the real world.
"Since these drones built structures inside a lab, they didn't have to contend with wind or other outdoor
disturbances. Also, cameras placed around the room could help track the drones'positions and send them
along the correct paths.Outdoors, the drones would have to navigate without this extra help,"says
Tagliabue.
Kovac is already planning to do tests outdoors. He also plans to build more complex structures. He
believes that drones can work together like bees in the future, and they will construct buildings or make
repairs in places that are tough for human crews and heavy machinery to reach."That may include disaster
areas, the tops of tall buildings or even other planets,"Kovac says."There's a lot of interest in building on
Ma1 s with robots.”
28.How did the drones make the tower stay straight?
A.They used hard and strong material.
B.They sprayed the foam downwards.
C.They cooperated in keeping a balance in layer thickness.
D.They thickened layers by adding more and more foam.
29.What does the underlined phrase"contend withmean in paragraph 3?
A.Rule out.
B.Compete with.
C.Give out
D.Deal with
30.What does Kovac think about the Build-Drones?
A.They are full of promise.
B.They are widely in use now.
C.They can't replace humans.
D.They can't do complex tasks.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Drones Can Think and Learn like People
B.Drones Work Together to Print Structures
C.3D Printing Will Change the Business World
D.3D Printing:Everything You Need to Know

Eating a traditional Mediterranean-type diet-rich in foods such as seafood, fruit, and nutsmay help
reduce the risk of dementia (by almost a quaiter,a new study has revealed.
Expeits at Newcastle University found that individuals who ate a Mediterranean-like diet had up to
23%lower risk for dementia than those who did not. This research, published today in the joumal BMC
Medicine,is one of the biggest studies of its kind.
Scientists analyzed data from 60,298 individuals from the UK Biobank, including individuals from
across the UK,who had completed a dietary assessment. The authors scored individuals based on how
closely their diet matched the key features of a Mediterranean one.The participants were allowed for almost
a decade, during which time there were 882 cases of dementia.
The authors considered each individual's genetic risk for dementia by estimating what is known as
their polygenic(多基因的)isk一a measure of all the different genes that are related to the risk of dementia.
They found that there were similar associations between sticking to Mediterranean diet and dementia risk in
individuals with higher and lower genetic iisk for this condition, which may indicate that even for those
with a higher genetic risk, having a better diet could reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.
Dr Janice Ranson, joint lead author on the paper, said:"Dementia impacts the lives of millions of
individuals throughout the world, and there are currently limited options for treating this condition. Our
study shows a Mediterranean diet that has a high intake of healthy plant-based foods may be important for
future strategies to reduce dementia risk. For example, the dementia prevention efforts could go beyond
general healthy diet advice and focus on choosing specific foods and nutrients."
The authors caution that their analysis is limited to individuals who self-reported their ethnic
background as white,British or Irish,as genetic data was only available based on European countries, and
that futher research is needed in a range of populations to determine the potential benefit.
32.What did scientists do during the study?
A.They scored the Mediterranean diet.
B.They tracked the participants'health
C.They collected data from 60,298 families.
D.They selected 882 potential dementia cases.
33.What effect can we learn about the Mediterranean diet?
A.It helps to estimate the polygenic risk.
B.It increases one's chance of developing dementia
C.It can reduce dementia risk regardless of one's genetic risk.
D.It can provide protection against various genetic diseases.
34.What are Dr Janice Ranson's words mainly about?
A.Values of the study.
B.Features of the study.
C.Elements of a healthy diet
D.Ways to deal with dementia.
35.What will further research most probably focus on?
A.Finding out more benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
B.Applying the findings to the treatment of dementia
C.Involving participants of diverse races and nationalities.
D.Studying the rate of dementia within different age groups.

Successful individuals do things just a little differently than the average people.36 Here are
four key habits that athletes have to create success.

(爱唱反调的人).38
They believe in being their best, rather than being the best.
Successful athletes know that there is always room for improvement. It's like squeezing (the last bit
of toothpaste out of the tube.Just when you think it's empty, you squeeze out just a little more.39
Sometimes it involves a different technique, strategy,or even a different coach. It may also involve learning
a new skill altogether.
·40
Successful athletes surround themselves with positive energy and other successful people. There is a
quote that says,"Surround yourself with people who support your dreams."In order to create success, you
should find those people and groups that support your goals.
A.They hang out with good apples.
B.The same goes for athletes as well.
C.They put themselves in others'shoes.
D.Successful athletes know this and plan accordingly.
E.Success, therefore,is built on small sustainable changes.
F.In order to do this, you must first believe in your ability to do so.
G.However, you must commit to your goals and hold firm in the face of difficulties

After being busy for half a year,my parents decided to drive me to a scenic spot outside the city to
have fun.Joyfully,we planned our driving route.
Then,on a December Saturday moming,my dad started his car and we set off with great expectations.
Before long,we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the
trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited!
As a few hours passed,we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later,we found a river not far away
from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad tumned
our car and drove towards it.Soon,we were driving on the sandy beach.Moments later, our car wheels were
struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it,our car had got stuck in the sand.My dad tried to tumn around or move back, but
the car didn't move.We were woried, trapped in the middle of nowhere.Even worse,it began raining and
was cold.We got out of the car and tried to push it,but failed. After a couple of minutes,we were tired and
our hair and coats were a little wet.But the car only sank further into the sand.

Anxiously,we walked to the road, eager to stop a vehicle and let it help pull our car out of the sand.
Our coats and hair were wetter and wetter. Before the joumney,we hadn't prepared umbrellas or carried any
food. Now,we were hungry and cold, standing in the rain. After waiting for a long time, there wasn't one
vehicle passing.
Just when we were helpless,we saw a farmhouse not far away."Can they help us?"I asked. My dad
was doubtful.Still,we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor and unfriendly. My
dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.
