Leo had always suffered from a deep fear of public speaking. Whenever he had to speak in front of others, his heart would race and his palms would sweat. In Grade 9, his English teacher, Mrs. Foster, announced a storytelling contest with the theme “Courage in Our Lives.” Leo’s stomach tightened, and he felt like running away.
After class, his best friend Maya noticed his worry. She gently encouraged him, “Why not tell the story of your grandpa? He never gave up, even when illness took away his sight, and later he became a respected painter.” Leo’s eyes lit up. His grandpa had always been his hero. That night, Leo sat by the window, recalling grandpa’s firm voice: “Fear is a paper tiger—it looks scary but cannot truly hurt you if you face it.”
For a whole week, Leo practiced in front of a mirror every evening. At first, his voice trembled (颤抖) and he often forgot words. But he kept going. On the day of the contest, Leo walked onto the stage. With a deep breath he began: “My grandpa taught me that courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward despite it.” Slowly, his voice grew steady (沉稳) and powerful. When he finished, the audience burst into warm applause.
Leo did not win first place that day, but he earned something more valuable—lasting confidence. Since then, he has volunteered to host school events and joined the debate club. The experience changed his life, proving that growth happens when we dare to step out of our comfort zones.
26.Why did Leo feel scared about the storytelling contest?
A.He had no interesting story to tell. B.He was afraid of speaking in public.
C.Mrs. Foster was very strict with him. D.He didn’t like the theme “Courage”.

29.What did Leo gain from the storytelling contest?
A.A new best friend. B.First-place prize.
C.Lasting confidence. D.A cash reward.
30.How does the writer organize the story and what lesson does it mainly teach?
A.By comparing different contests; winning is everything.
B.In time order from problem to solution; stepping out of comfort zone leads to growth.
C.By listing grandpa’s achievements; friends are the most important.
D.With flashbacks (倒述) only; storytelling is easy for everyone.

Did you know that about 2.2 billion people around the world are in lack of safe drinking water? Even in the USA, millions of people face water shortages. To solve this problem, MIT (麻省理工学院) engineers have created a device that turns air into drinking water.
The Earth’s atmosphere contains huge amounts of water vapor (水蒸气). If we could catch this vapor, we could have fresh water, even in dry areas.
To catch this hidden water, the MIT team built a window-sized panel that looks like a sheet of black bubble wrap (泡泡纸). It’s made from a special material called hydrogel, which acts like a sponge. This “sponge” breathes in water vapor from the night air. As it takes in vapor, its tiny domes (圆顶) swell up and grow bigger. In the daytime, the heat makes this trapped water turn into steam. When the water is released, the domes shrink (收缩) back down to their original size. The steam touches the cool glass cover and turns into liquid drops. Finally, the clean water flows down through a tube and is ready to drink.
This device needs no batteries or electricity to work. It just uses the heat from the sun to help the water evaporate (蒸发). The engineers tested the device in Death Valley, California, one of the driest places on Earth. Even there, it was able to collect two-thirds of a cup of water per day.
Since the panels stand upright, they don’t take up much space. The team hopes that more families can set up these panels to solve the water problem.
31.What is the main problem the device tries to solve?
A.Air pollution. B.Water shortage. C.Energy shortage. D.Climate change.
32.What is the device made from?
A.Hydrogel B.Sponges C.Bubble wrap D.Glass and plastic tubes
33.How does the device collect water vapor at night?
A.The wind blows the water into a tube.
B.The sponge breathes in vapor from the air.
C.The cool glass cover turns the steam into liquid water.
D.The heat from the sun turns the trapped water into steam.
34.What does the device need to work?
A.Batteries B.Electricity C.Wind energy D.Heat from the sun
35.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.A Famous Research Team from MIT
B.A Special Device to Get Water from Air
C.How to Use Solar Energy in Daily Life
D.The Serious Problem of Water Shortages
【答案】31.B 32.A 33.B 34.D 35.B

Along China’s coast, thousands of small fishing villages, which have existed by the sea for centuries, used to depend on traditional ways of life. In the past, their wooden boats went out at sunrise and returned with full nets (网) at sunset. However, as modern times brought bigger ships, the number of fish in the ocean dropped greatly. Now, these old villages are looking for new ways that can not only protect the ocean but also keep their traditions alive.
Take one small fishing village on the eastern coast as an example. Ten years ago, the water near the village was so polluted that it was difficult for villagers to catch any fish. Therefore, the villagers decided to make a change. They stopped throwing old fishing nets into the sea and picked up plastic waste from the beach every Friday. Slowly, the water became clearer. Fish began to come back.
Today, this village is famous for its clean sea, which draws many tourists who come to see the blue water and taste fresh seafood. The village does not use large, harmful fishing methods. Instead, fishermen go out in small boats and follow strict rules. They do not catch baby fish. They do not fish during breeding (繁殖) seasons. This way, the sea can rest and recover.
Some villages have also started “sea farming” together. They grow kelp (海带) and shellfish (贝类) on ropes in the water. These plants and animals can clean the water naturally. Also, they bring good income (收入). Villagers say they are not just fishermen now—they are ocean farmers and ocean keepers.
Young people who once left for big cities are coming back. They open small hotels and restaurants by the sea. They use less plastic and teach visitors to protect the ocean. Grandfathers who spent their whole lives on boats now take children out to watch birds and learn about the sea. Protecting the sea does not mean stopping all fishing or losing old ways. It means using smarter methods, caring more, and passing down the love for the ocean to the next generation (下一代).
36.How does the writer introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A.By telling a story. B.By making a comparison.
C.By listing numbers. D.By giving examples.
37.What did the villagers do to improve the environment ten years ago?
①They caught fewer fish than before.
②They stopped throwing old nets into the sea.
③They picked up plastic waste from the beach.
④They closed down the factory along the coast.
A.①② B.①③ C.①④ D.②③
38.What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.Villagers grow crops and raise animals in the sea.
B.Villagers both use the ocean and take care of it.
C.Villagers have given up fishing completely.
D.Villagers want to control the ocean like farmers control the land.
39.What can we infer about the elderly in the village?
A.They no longer care about the sea.
B.They have moved to big cities to live.
C.They are helping the young develop the love for the ocean.
D.They now spend more time on boats than before.
40.What’s the theme of the text?
A.The Fishing Villages. B.The Ocean Protection.
C.The New Fishing Ways. D.The Village Traditions.
【答案】36.B 37.D 38.B 39.C 40.B

However, as modern times brought bigger ships, the number of fish in the ocean dropped greatly. Now, these old villages are looking for new ways that can not only protect the ocean but also keep their traditions alive.”,第一段把过去传统捕鱼生活和现代大船出现、鱼类减少做今昔对比,引出渔村转型、保护海洋的话题。
37.第二段明确指出“They stopped throwing old fishing nets into the sea and picked up plastic waste from the beach every Friday.”,他们不再把旧渔网扔进海里,并且每周五都从海滩上捡起塑料垃圾。
38.第四段明确指出“Villagers say they are not just fishermen now—they are ocean farmers and ocean keepers.”,他们既是利用海洋谋生(渔民、海洋养殖),又是守护海洋的人,对应“既利用又保护”。
39.第五段明确指出“Grandfathers who spent their whole lives on boats now take children out to watch birds and learn about the sea.”,那些在渔船上度过了一生的祖父们,现在带着孩子们出海观鸟,学习认识海洋。

Resilience (韧性) is the ability to get over challenges in life. Here are five simple, science-backed ways to build it, suitable for middle school students.
First, 41 Family, teachers and friends can lift you up and make you stronger. A study shows that supporting others and being part of a social network helps build long-term resilience. Even small acts, like showing up for someone, can create a strong support system for yourself too.
Second, take care of your sleep. Poor rest quality makes everything harder and reduces resilience. 42 A 2023 study found that good sleep improves resilience, so try to set a regular bedtime and make sleep a key part.
Third, build regular exercise into your habit. Exercise is great for your nervous system and brain. 43 They can start building your resilience and help you deal with stress better.
Fourth, face and experience a bit of stress. Controlled stress, like setting a timer for a puzzle (拼图), speaking in public, or even a cold shower, can help you build up strength for bigger challenges later. 44
Finally, 45 Taking classes, mastering new skills or exploring new interests can improve your resilience and adaptability (适应性). Learning helps you develop better coping skills and gives you more ways to deal with life’s hard moments.
By trying these steps, you can grow stronger and face life’s difficulties with more confidence.
A.practise lifelong learning.

C.develop your social relationships.
D.So managing your time well also helps you become stronger inside.
E.Though solving the problem of rest isn’t easy, small changes work well.

G.Research shows this kind of “micro-stress” training makes us more resilient.
【答案】41.C 42.E 43.F 44.G 45.A
根据第二段中“Family, teachers and friends can lift you up and make you stronger.”及“being part of a social network”可推知本段主要强调人际关系的重要性。
42.根据第三段中“take care of your sleep.”
43.根据第四段中“build regular exercise into your habit.”及后文“They can start building your resilience”可知,此处需填入具体的锻炼活动且为复数形式,以便后文用“They”指代。
44.根据第五段中“face and experience a bit of stress.”及“Controlled stress... can help you build up strength”可知,此处是对这种压力训练效果的研究总结。
45.根据第六段中“Taking classes, mastering new skills or exploring new interests”及“Learning helps you”可知,本段主题是关于通过不断学习来提升适应性。

I learned the importance of creative thinking many years ago through a simple yet unforgettable physics lesson.
One day, our physics teacher gave us an interesting 51 . He told us to make a paper plane of any 52 . The goal was to get it to fly as far as possible in the hallway. Most of us took it seriously. I folded the best plane I could, carefully shaping the wings and the nose (机头). It flew pretty 53 , and I felt proud of myself.
However, one boy did something completely 54 . He made the greatest, yet the 55 paper plane. 56 , it wasn’t really a plane at all. He stood at the starting line holding a normal piece of paper, with no folds. Some classmates stretched (伸展) their necks while laughing at 57 , thinking he had no idea what he was doing. But moments later, he took that piece of paper, made it into a 58 , and threw it down the hallway. The paper ball rolled and bounced (弹跳) farther than any of our paper planes. We were so 59 by what he had done. We never expected things to happen like this.
All of us were 60 easily by him. Some students got mad and said that it was unfair. The physics teacher smiled and asked, “How so? He didn’t do anything wrong 61 a paper ball is different. It is indeed (确实) a shape.” Yes, the boy didn’t cheat. He just completed the task in a 62 way while the rest of us followed the usual method without thinking.
In our life, what we are taught leads to our experience. We do 63 according to it. However, what we 64 gets in the way of our development at some point. It is 65 necessary for us to learn to think outside the box. Just like the boy in the story, we are supposed to think creatively and challenge old rules bravely.

倒数第二段“It is indeed a shape.”
上文“The goal was to get it to fly as far as possible in the hallway.”
倒数第二段“...a paper ball is different.”
下文“...he took that piece of paper, made it into a ball, and threw it down the hallway.”
After all“毕竟”,As a result“因此”和Of course“当然”不符合语境。
下文“The paper ball...”
下文“We never expected things to happen like this.”
上文第三段“The paper ball rolled and bounced (弹跳) farther than any of our paper planes.”
第一句“I learned the importance of creative thinking...”
上文“In our life, what we are taught leads to our experience.”
此处与上文“what we are taught leads to our experience”对应,表示事物的两面性,“are taught”对应“learned”,我们所受的教导能给我们提供发展经验,但是学到的东西也可以成为发展的阻碍。

Evidence-Based Ways to Build Resilience
B.keep a regular reading habit.
C.develop your social relationships.
D.So managing your time well also helps you become stronger inside.
E.Though solving the problem of rest isn’t easy, small changes work well.
F.Some activities like walking, cycling, or team sports are especially helpful.
G.Research shows this kind of “micro-stress” training makes us more resilient.
