It was time to go back to school. Alice was excited to see her old classmates, but, she was also nervous about all the new things. That’s why she made sure she was well prepared.
Everything went well—until, something unexpected happened.
Alice’s new teacher, Mr. Brown, who seemed very strict and serious, asked each of them to talk about their summer holidays.
Most kids seemed shy and many of them only said a few words. Soon it would be Alice’s turn.
Suddenly, she heard a sound coming from under her desk. Could it be Mr. Nibbles—her hamster (仓鼠)? She opened her backpack. Yes, it was exactly Mr. Nibbles! Alice had no idea when, why, or how he had gone into her backpack, but there he was!
Alice’s heart started beating fast. She began to have a stomachache. Noticing her expression, Mr. Brown asked if there was anything wrong.
Now everybody is looking at her! And she just wanted to disappear into a hole in the ground.
It took a year, but Alice finally remembered to breathe slowly and deeply. And once she was calm enough to speak, she explained what was going on.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Nibbles,” Mr. Brown said softly. “The first day of school can be challenging for all of us.”
He found a big box and put a little bowl of water in it. Then he asked if anyone wanted to share ideas to make Mr. Nibbles feel more comfortable.

With her smooth long straight hair, high heels, smart clothes and perfect smiles, Xiaoqi stands in the exhibition hall, ready to answer lots of questions. She is nice, understanding, and knowledgeable. But here’s the thing: Xiaoqi isn’t a human being.
She is a human-like robot made by Ex-Robots, a company in China’s northeastern city of Dalian. Thanks to the progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, these machines have gone from being just in novels and on movie screens to having daily uses in the real world. Xiaoqi is attracting (吸引) crowds at the 2024 World Intelligence Expo which is held from Thursday to Sunday in Tianjin, in northern China.
“Right now, we make 400 to 500 robots every year,” said Qu Yan, who is in charge of media relations at Ex-Robots. “Our company designs robots that look more like humans, with better facial expressions and the ability to have an emotional interaction (互动) with users. So we call them emotional interaction robots. At the moment, these robots are mainly used in museums, research centers and universities. However, once their prices get lower and more people can afford them, they could be used in more situations,” Qu Yan said.
Human-like robots are getting more and more attention in China, both from common people and the government. At the show, different tech companies showed very lifelike robots that could walk fast, dance, and even make coffee. A group of people gathered to watch a demonstration by a 130 cm-tall human-like robot showing what it could do, like greeting people, shaking hands, doing Tai Chi and making heart gestures. “The need for human-like robots could be more than 10 billion in the future,” said Tan, a robotics expert. “Each person might own at least three to five robots to do different things, like helping with housework, giving care, and having conversations.”
8. What does Xiaoqi look like?
A. She wears sports clothes. B. She wears low heels.
C. She has short straight hair. D. She has perfect smiles.
9. What can we infer (推断) from Qu Yan’s words in Paragraph 3?

B. People don’t need human-like robots in their daily life.
C. Companies want to produce more human-like robots to make more money.
D. Human-like robots will be used in museums, research centers and universities.

Most of the country’s wild Asian elephants, over 280 in number, are found in Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture (自治州) at the southern part of Yunnan Province.
Attracted by plenty of food like corn and bananas and getting used to human activities, these huge animals often walk into areas where people live.
The closer connection between humans and elephants has caused more problems, bringing difficulties to many communities that hardly had any experience with elephant activities before. To deal with these problems, local governments and conservation groups have carried out different plans.
In Xishuangbanna, the government of Jinghong city have set up the Asian Elephant Safety Warning Team. Groups of professional “elephant watchers” use drones (无人机) to keep an eye on the movements of wild elephants all the time, offering important information to local communities and people. By giving timely reports on where the elephants are, the goal is to reduce the risks that come with human-elephant meetings as much as possible.
“Since it started its Asian Elephant Protection Program in 2000, the International Fund for Animal Welfare China has been focusing on helping local communities and people”, said Ma Chenyue, the program manager of IFAW China.
“Local communities and people are right in the middle of human-elephant problems. They are under direct pressure because wild elephants are moving into their living areas,” Ma said. “Their crops are damaged (破坏); their safety is at risk when they are taking care of their plants or looking for mushrooms in the forests; and they have actually given up some things in their development for the protection of wild elephants. So we feel it’s our duty to help them find suitable ways to live in peace with wild elephants.”
12. What can we learn about China’s wild Asian elephants according to the passage?
A. They enjoy eating corn and bananas.
B. They are afraid to get close to humans.
C. They are found in the north of Yunnan Province.
D. There are 200 of them living in Yunnan Province.
13. Why have the governments set up the Asian Elephant Safety Warning Team?
A. Because they can help wild elephants find more food.
B. Because they can catch wild elephants that enter villages.
C. Because they can stop wild elephants from moving around.
D. Because they can help reduce the risks of human-elephant meetings.
14. What does the underlined word “They” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. Wild elephants. B. Human-elephant problems.
C. Crops and safety. D. Local communities and people.
15. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the living habits of wild Asian elephants in Xishuangbanna.
B. To tell the importance of protecting wild Asian elephants in Xishuangbanna.
C. To show the ways to deal with human-elephant problems in Xishuangbanna.
D. To list the difficulties of communities caused by human-elephant connection.
A 13. D 14. D 15. C

根据第二段第一句“Attracted by plenty of food like corn and bananas...these huge animals often walk into areas where people live.”(被玉米和香蕉等充足的食物所吸引……
根据第四段最后一句“By giving timely reports on where the elephants are, the goal is to reduce the risks that come with human-elephant meetings as much as possible.”(通过及时报告大象的位置,目标是尽可能减少人象相遇带来的风险)可知,政府成立亚洲象安全预警团队是为了减少人象相遇的风险。
根据划线词所在段落的上一句“Local communities and people are right in the middle of human-elephant problems.”(当地社区和人们正处于人象问题的中心)以及后文描述的“They are under direct pressure...Their crops are damaged...their safety is at risk”(他们面临直接压力……

上文“The goal was to get it to fly as far as possible in the hallway.”
倒数第二段“...a paper ball is different.”
下文“...he took that piece of paper, made it into a ball, and threw it down the hallway.”
