Do you know Mo’s Chicken Pot? This small restaurant in Foshan has been run by Uncle Mo for six years. Every day, only about 10 tables of customers came. Life was slow and peaceful.
However, one video shot by a famous blogger changed everything. In the video, Uncle Mo looked worried and said, “If you make my restaurant too famous, I can’t handle it!” This simple sentence became a huge hit. The video got over 150 million views on TikTok.
Soon, things went crazy. People lined up at 6 a.m. Some drove 2,000 kilometers and even slept in their cars for the chicken pot. Daily customers jumped from about 10 tables to 200 tables. Uncle Mo became exhausted. But here’s the strangest part—the more he tried to refuse customers, the more people came.
Uncle Mo’s story is not unique. Over the years, China has seen many similar popular crazes (热潮) like Zibo barbecue and “Chicken Cutlet Brother” from Jingdezhen. In most cases, the crazy crowds leave after a few months. Some of these overnight-famous people even admit their food is not as special as people expect.
What should we learn? First, don’t believe everything online. Second, don’t follow the crowd blindly. Third, behind every hot story is an ordinary person wanting a normal life. Next time you see a long line on social media, ask yourself: Do I really need to go, or am I just following the crowd?
11. How long has Uncle Mo run his chicken pot restaurant?

During my childhood, my mother had a special habit in the evenings. Sometimes she would knit (编织) hats for us, and sometimes she made cookies. But one day, she surprised us all by saying, “I’m going to call one neighbour every night.” I was 16 then and couldn’t understand why she would spend her evenings talking to people she hardly knew.
One evening, I heard her conversation with an elderly lady. She asked about the lady’s dinner and even discussed the pretty roses in the park. When she hung up, I questioned her choice of topics, finding them small. With a kind smile, she explained, “I might be the only person she talked to today. So even the simplest conversations can make her feel cared for.”
Nearly 30 years later, I finally understood her calls’ true influence. The elderly often feel lonely for different reasons. As people age, they may experience the loss of friends and family members. Health problems can make it harder for the elderly to join in social activities. Retirement (退休) can also take away daily connections that were once provided by work. The lonely feeling can be very strong for the elderly. Loneliness can make them feel forgotten and cause sadness, disappointment, helplessness, even a sense of loss.
My mother’s conversations were more than just friendly talks—they were lifelines for lonely old people. Her calls connected them to the world outside. Her decision and social skills in keeping these connections were more than I could understand, and I wish I could do better.
16. What did the mother decide to do every night?
A. Knit hats for the family.

18. Which of the following are the reasons for old people’s loneliness?
①Losing daily work talks.
②Having health problems.
③Losing friends or family.

19. What does the underlined word “lifelines” mean in the passage?
A. Hobbies for old people.
B. The mother’s daily habit.
C. Important support for their life.
D. Phone lines in the neighbourhood.
20. What can we learn from the mother?
A. Small kind acts can help others a lot.
B. Warm greetings build close friendship.

D. Phone calls are better than face-to-face talks.

The 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games were jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in 2025, with many activities being held in cities like Shenzhen. A big torch-lighting ceremony (仪式) for the three major sports events took place in Guangzhou’s Nansha district.
What made the ceremony special? The “source flame” (源火) was created using the flammable (可燃的) ice, a type of clean energy, which was taken from the deep sea—1, 522 meters under the South China Sea. For the first time ever, a torch’s source flame has been lit with clean energy sourced directly from the deep ocean floor.
Chen Zongheng from the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey explained the steps: scientists used a special instrument to collect the flammable ice from the seabed, let gas out by reducing pressure, and dried the gas to remove impurities (杂质) to get the flame. More importantly, they also used solar power to help start the fire under the sea. “The successful torch-lighting shows a development in collection technology for deep-sea flammable ice, making it possible to get a source flame from more than 1,500 meters underwater, ”said Chen.
This achievement showed the idea of “fire and water working together”, and it proved the combination of clean energy with Guangdong’s strong technology in deep-sea exploration. It also stresses Guangdong’s efforts to use ocean-based clean energy, setting a green example for large events. Later, the flame went to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao for relays (接力), spreading the idea of environmental protection.
21. Where was the torch-lighting ceremony held?
A. In Macao. B. In Shenzhen. C. In Guangzhou. D. In Hong Kong.
22. What does the underlined word “which” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The source flame. B. The deep sea.
C. The torch-lighting ceremony. D. The flammable ice.
23. According to Chen Zongheng, which of the following shows the correct steps to get the flame?
a. Dry the gas to make it cleaner.
b. Use solar power to start the fire.
c. Let gas out by reducing pressure.
d. Collect flammable ice from the seabed.
A. a→b→d→c B. a→b→c→d C. d→a→c→b D. d→c→a→b
24. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The route of the flame relay.
B. The meaning of the special ceremony.

D. The way of collecting deep-sea flammable ice.
25. What is the best title for the passage?

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍母亲每晚给孤独老人打电话,用简单交谈传递关爱,成为他们重要的精神支持。
【16题详解】
第一段第三句指出“But one day, she surprised us all by saying, ‘I’m going to call one neighbour every night.’ ”(但有一天,她惊讶地告诉我们,“我打算每晚给一个邻居打电话。”),母亲决定每晚给一位邻居打电话。
【17题详解】
第二段第二句提到“She asked about the lady’s dinner and even discussed the pretty roses in the park.”(她询问了那位女士的晚餐,甚至讨论了公园里漂亮的玫瑰。)以及随后作者觉得topics是“small”,因为谈话内容都是关于日常琐事(如晚餐、玫瑰),所以作者起初觉得话题很小。
【18题详解】
第三段内容指出老人孤独的原因包括:“experience the loss of friends and family members”(失去朋友或家人,对应③);“Health problems can make it harder...”(健康问题,对应②);“Retirement can also take away daily connections that were once provided by work”(退休失去了工作提供的日常联系,对应①)。文中未明确提及④“缺乏户外活动”是独立原因,而是健康问题导致难以参加社交活动。因此①②③正确。
