Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world. Many people love cats, but do you know these interesting facts about them?
Cats have very good hearing. They can hear much better than dogs and humans. They can hear very quiet sounds, and they can even hear a mouse moving 10 metres away. Their ears can turn around very fast to find where the sound comes from.
Cats sleep a lot! They sleep for about 16 hours a day. That’s because they use a lot of energy when they play and run, so they need to rest to get their energy back. Most cats sleep in the day and are active at night.
Cats are very good at jumping. They can jump up to 6 times their own height. That's like a human jumping over a two-floor building! They have strong back legs, which help them jump high and land safely.
Cats have a very special sense of smell. Their nose has more than 200 million smell cells, while humans only have 5 million. So they can smell things much better than us. They can even smell their favourite food from far away.

Good afternoon. Welcome to England. I hope that your visit will be a great one. Today, I’d like to tell you a few of our rules.
Firstly, I want to say something about drinking. Now, you can’t buy wine (葡萄酒) in this country if you are under 18 years old, and your friends can’t buy it for you, either. Teenagers can have soft drinks.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves, but please don’t make noise, especially at night. You should respect other people who want to be quiet.
Thirdly, traffic (交通). Be careful when you cross (穿过) the road. People drive on the left side of the road in our country. Use the crossings (人行横道) for walking when you cross the road.
Fourthly, litter. Littering in public (公共的) places breaks the rules. When you have some litter, put it in a bin (垃圾桶), or put it in your pocket (口袋) and take it home.

Mr. and Mrs. Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters: eleven-year-old Amy and nine-year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family have become the focus (焦点) of the whole country after they finished 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
The Meeks didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV, or play computer games. About one year ago, the Meeks listed 100 activities for the two girls to do outside.
Although Mr. and Mrs. Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to spend time with their daughters. The two girls really had a great time joining in the activities. Every holiday and weekend, the Meeks tried the activities on their list, like hiking, climbing and so on. The two girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills. They could even stand in front of their schoolmates to give a talk. “Our friends spend a lot of their free time doing things like playing computer games and watching TV. These are bad for their health. Luckily, we’ve had something different.” Amy and Ella also helped their parents make a new list of activities for the next 12 months.

In the South of the Yangtze River, there is a special kind of weather called Meiyu every year. It usually comes in June and July.
During Meiyu period, it rains a lot. The rivers and lakes get more water. The abundant rainfall is essential for the growth of crops and plants. It provides the necessary water for rice fields, making the plants grow faster and better. The trees become greener and the flowers look more beautiful. Alice grew very tall. Her head hit the ceiling (天花板). She could not go through the small door to the beautiful garden. She sat down and cried. She cried and cried until she was lying in a large pool of tears (眼泪). The salt water reached her chin.
Suddenly, the White Rabbit ran toward her. He was wearing white gloves and carrying a fan. “Oh, the Duchess will be so angry!” he said. “I am late!” Alice tried to ask for help, but the rabbit ran away quickly. He dropped his gloves and the fan.
Alice picked up the fan. As she waved it, she began to shrink (缩小). She became smaller and smaller. Soon she was only 25 centimetres tall. She dropped the fan just in time, or she would have disappeared (消失) completely. But now she was so tiny that she almost drowned (淹没) in her own tears.
Alice swam around the pool, looking for a way out. She saw a Mouse swimming nearby. “Excuse me, Mouse,” she said politely. “Do you know the way out of this pool?” The Mouse only looked at her with its small eyes and said nothing.
Alice thought the Mouse might not understand English. She tried to speak French. She remembered only one sentence from her textbook: “Où est ma chatte?” (Where is my cat?) The Mouse jumped up in fear (害怕) and began swimming away quickly.
“Oh, I am so sorry!” Alice cried. “I forgot that mice are afraid of cats.” She tried to explain that her cat Dinah was very kind and loved to chase mice, but that only made the Mouse more frightened. Finally, Alice promised not to talk about cats or dogs. The Mouse slowly swam back and said, “Follow me to the shore. I will tell you my story.”
Alice followed the Mouse. When they got to the shore, many other wet animals were already there. Everyone wanted to get dry.
