The International Day of Peace is on September 21st every year. Its goal is to build a more peaceful world. On this day, the United Nations asks for a 24-hour ceasefire (停火) — all fighting around the world should stop. There is also a minute of silence at 12 noon to honor victims of war.
Each year has a different theme, such as “End racism: build peace”. People worldwide take part in many events: sports matches, yoga, meditation, and art projects. Schools also join in. They focus on stopping bullying and violence. Some schools train students to be “mediators” — students who help others solve disagreements peacefully.

Northern Ireland is one of the four countries in the United Kingdom, along with England, Scotland, and Wales. About 1.9 million people live there. Its capital is Belfast. It is often called “The Six Counties” because it has six regions.
You can find beautiful beaches, forests, and mountains there. A famous place is the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About 40,000 columns (石柱) were formed after a volcanic eruption. Most are hexagonal (六边形的) and some are 12 meters tall.
Nearly everyone speaks English. A few people speak Irish Gaelic, an old Celtic language. Another language is Ulster Scots.
Music includes traditional Irish, jazz, rock, and pop. In summer, Belfast has large festivals with international artists and local bands like Snow Patrol.
Popular sports include football, rugby, cricket, and Gaelic football — a sport similar to rugby. For rugby, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland play together on one team. But for football, Northern Ireland has its own national team.
The best-known dish is the Ulster Fry: bacon, eggs, sausages, and soda bread, all fried. St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th is a big celebration, and the shamrock (三叶草) is an important symbol.

In some cities, big animals often come into the streets to look for food. In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons (狒狒) enter gardens and even houses to get fruit and food. They are strong and can scare people. But cities are also dangerous for baboons. Cars may hit them, and human food is bad for their teeth. Now special workers called “Baboon Monitors” help return baboons to the countryside.
In Berlin, Germany, wild pigs sometimes come into the city. They eat flowers and plants in parks. Some people like them and give them food, but others want the police to stop them.

A famous place is the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
St. Patrick's Day on March 17th is a big celebration, and the shamrock (三叶草) is an important symbol.
