Step 1 Revision: Book Reports (3 min)
1. Greet Ss. Show a sample book report of The Little Prince from PPT.
2. Ask: What have we learned about writing a book report? Have you read more books recently?
3. Quickly review the key questions and answers from previous lessons (e.g., Have you decided on a book? – Yes, I’ve already read it. / No, I haven’t. But I’ve already borrowed it.)
Ss answer questions using present perfect (e.g., I’ve just finished My Childhood).
Review present perfect in context of reading experiences.
Step 2 Presentation : Structure of Present Perfect (5 min)
1. Show tasks “What structure of the present perfect?” with multiple-choice examples.
2. Explain the formula: Subject + have/has + past participle.
3. Show affirmative, negative, and question forms:
- I have finished my homework.
- She hasn’t read the book yet.
- Have you seen the movie?
4. Highlight the word order for wh-questions: What have you done?
1. Observe examples and take notes.
2. Repeat the structure chorally.
3. Answer the multiple-choice questions orally
Present the grammatical structure clearly; check basic understanding.
Step 3 Presentation : Past Participles (5 min)
1. Show “The present perfect forms of the verbs.”
2. Present three categories:
- AAA: cut-cut-cut, let-let-let
- ABA: come-came-come, run-ran-run
- ABB: buy-bought-bought, read-read-read
- ABC: go-went-gone, see-saw-seen
- other: do-did-done, have-had-had, be-was/were-been, eat-ate-eaten
3. Show additional verbs: hit, cost, set, become, run, come, buy, sell, keep, speak, give, know.
1. Chant the verb forms after the teacher.
2. Practice in pairs: one says the base form, the other says the past participle.

Step 4 Presentation : When to Use Present Perfect & Signal Words (6 min)
1. Learn “When do we use the present perfect?” Read example sentences:
- Have you had your lunch yet? – I’ve just had it.
- I have lost my pen.
- I have already watched the TV play.
2. Explain the first use: past action with present result/influence (give more examples).
3. Show the second use: action that started in the past and continues to the present. Tell Ss this will be studied next unit.
4. Learn “What key words of the present perfect?” List: already, yet, just, before, ever, never, so far, recently. Explain where to use them
1. Read the example sentences and guess the meaning.
2. Take notes on the two uses (focus on the first use for now).
3. Memorize the signal words with their Chinese meanings.
Clarify the core meaning of present perfect (present influence) and identify time markers that trigger it.
Step 5 Controlled Practice: Complete Sentences (4 min)
1. Finish the tasks “Complete the sentences below and pay attention to the words in blue.”
2. Ss complete the 10 sentences individually. (e.g., I ______ (lose) my key already. She ______ (finish) her homework already.).
3. Check answers orally.

Step 6 Controlled Practice: Sentence Completion with Words in Brackets (4 min)

Step 8: Presentation & Discussion :Present Perfect vs. Simple Past (6 min)
1. Show the comparison: “Discuss the difference of the present perfect and the simple past in groups.”
2. Present the key distinctions:
- Simple past: definite past time (yesterday, last week, in 2020, just now); action finished, no connection to now.
- Present perfect: indefinite time or connection to now (already, yet, just, ever, never, so far, recently); action has a result or continues.
3. Show example pairs:
- He visited Beijing last summer. vs. He has visited Beijing before.
- I lost my pen. vs. I have lost my pen. (explain different meanings)
4. Do the “Please write down the true meaning of the sentences” activity (8 sentences). Ss write the implied meaning.
5. Check answers (e.g., I did my homework an hour ago – maybe forgotten now; I have done my homework – now free to play).
