The small town of Hay sits on the border (边境) between England and Wales. You can only reach it on small country roads and the trains no longer stop there. It was a quiet place until 1961. That year, a local man called Richard Booth came back from a trip to the US with a lot of second-hand books. He bought the town’s old fire station and changed it into a bookshop to sell them. For the next 10 years, he bought more empty shops and made them into bookshops, too, so that Hay became the world’s first “book town”.
With the money he made, Booth bought the town’s old castle (城堡). On April 1st, 1977, he jokingly declared (宣称) himself “king” and said the town was now an independent (独立的) country! His horse was the head of the government, and he even gave people passports. Some local people thought he was a little mad.
But he wasn’t crazy at all, and the joke made more people come to Hay to buy second-hand books. By the 1980s, there were one million books on sale on 15 km. of shelves in over 30 bookshops in Hay.
Then, in 1988, the Hay Literature (文学) Festival began there. Writers around the world came to talk about their new books, along with scientists, politicians (政治家) and even the President of the US! Now, half a million visitors go to the festival every year and spend over three million pounds.
When the “king” became old, he still liked selling books, and now there are book towns in many different countries in Europe, and in Australia, Canada and Malaysia, too. Not bad for something that started in a small town of just 1,300 people.

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells (编钟) were found from the Zeng Houyi Tomb in Suizhou, Hubei Province in 1978. They are historically important treasures of China.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung at three levels and are divided into (划分为) eight groups. There are 19 bells in three groups at the top level, 33 bells in three groups at the middle level and 12 bells in two groups at the bottom level. In addition, there is a single and much larger bell used to change pitch (音高). The bells in each row are different from one another in shape and size.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung on two sets of wood racks (架子). One rack is 7.48 meters long and 2.65 meters wide. The other rack is 3.35 meters long and 2.73 meters wide. The two racks are perpendicular to each other, and they make an angle (角) of ninety degrees.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells weigh a total of 5 tons. The biggest bell is 153.4 cm in height and 203.6 kg in weight while the smallest bell is 20.4 cm in height and 2.4 kg in weight.
Five musicians were needed to play the instrument in the past. These bells are sounded by striking (敲击). Because of their shapes, each bell could produce two different pitches-one if struck at the side, the other at the center. The whole set of chime bells is able to produce all the pitches of a modern piano.
There are more than 2,800 Chinese characters about music and the making of the instrument on the bells. Instruments of such a level were quite uncommon in the world at that time.

We all know that doing exercise makes us healthy. But many of us don’t know which is better to exercise, in the day or at night. Dr. Yang, a famous sleep doctor, advises people to do outdoor exercise for at least 30 minutes a day in the daytime.
Dr. Yang has been doing research on sports and sleep for years. He finds that those who exercise in natural light for half an hour every day have better sleep and more energy (能量). Dr. Yang himself gets up at 6:30 a.m. Then he usually takes a walk outside. Sometimes, he walks his two dogs in the park in the afternoon with his sunglasses left at home.
Many schools put Dr. Yang’s findings into practice. They made it a rule that students should do outdoor exercise once or twice a day. In some schools, students even formed outdoor running clubs. After some time, most students said that they benefited a lot from outdoor exercise. Now they sleep better and concentrate (集中) more on their studies.

Some students are now thinking about inviting their teachers to join them in their daily runs. They hope their teachers can also enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise. 53. Liu Gongquan was a famous Chinese calligrapher (书法家). He was smart and showed a talent for calligraphy at an early age. He was so proud of his talent and often showed off his calligraphy works to others. One day, he was showing off again. A man who sold tofu saw his works and said, “Your handwriting is not good enough. You have nothing to be proud of.”
Liu felt angry and said, “Why don’t you write a few characters for us to judge (评判)?”
The man smiled and said, “I can’t write well, but someone writes much better than you with his feet! If you don’t believe me, you can go to the city and see for yourself.”
The next day, Liu got up very early and went to the city. When he arrived, he saw many people standing under a big tree. He made his way through the crowd and saw an old man without arms writing with his feet. His handwriting was beautiful and brought loud cheers.
Liu was shocked and wanted to learn calligraphy from the old man. However, the old man refused to teach him. Although he couldn’t teach Liu calligraphy, he told Liu his secret of success—hard work and persistence (坚持).
Liu kept the old man’s words in mind and practiced hard. At last, he became a top calligrapher.

根据第一段“He was so proud of his talent and often showed off his calligraphy works to others.” be proud of可以转化为take pride in,故填pride;in。
根据第一段结尾“Your handwriting is not good enough. You have nothing to be proud of.” 由第③空后的“good enough for him”可知,原句可以转化为sth. is+形容词+enough for sb. to do sth. 故填weren’t;to。
根据倒数第二段“However, the old man refused to teach him. Although he couldn’t teach Liu calligraphy, he told Liu his secret of success—hard work and persistence”可知,老人没有教柳公权书法,但是告诉柳公权不要放弃,要努力。 tell sb. (not) to do sth.
根据最后一段“Liu kept the old man’s words in mind and practiced hard. At last, he became a top calligrapher.”
