Mrs. Linda White used to be a primary school English teacher and retired three years ago. Instead of enjoying a relaxing life at home, she opened a free after-school tutoring class in the empty room of the community building near her house. Her main goal was to help those poor children whose parents were too busy with work to guide their study after school. At first, only seven kids came to her small classroom. Most of them had weak grades in English and math, and no one could afford expensive after-school training classes outside.
Tom was one of the earliest students. He was shy and always failed his English tests before joining the class. He hated memorizing new words and often gave up halfway when doing homework. Mrs. White never blamed him. She used interesting games and daily stories to make English easy and fun. She spent extra thirty minutes every day helping Tom review what he had learned at school. With the old teacher’s patient help, Tom slowly changed his learning habits and got satisfying scores in his final exam half a year later.
As good news spread around the neighborhood, more and more parents sent their children here. Now about twenty-eight students take lessons from Mrs. White on each weekday afternoon. Some local college students also come in their spare time to work as volunteer teachers. When interviewed by the local newspaper, Mrs. White said she never planned to stop this free class. Helping kids make progress brings her the greatest happiness in her later life.

A. To earn extra money B. To help poor kids with schoolwork

With the rapid growth of urban population around the world, traditional farmland is becoming less and less, and food supply for big cities has become a serious problem. Vertical farming, a new type of modern agriculture, gradually appears inside high buildings in big cities and brings new solutions to this trouble. Different from traditional farms on open ground, vertical farms grow vegetables and small fruits layer by layer inside tall buildings, which greatly saves valuable land resources in crowded cities.
Inside vertical farm buildings, natural sunlight is not the main light source. Instead, special LED lights are set up on every floor to provide proper light for plants all day long. The watering system is fully automatic. Workers do not need to carry water to each plant by hand. Water is recycled inside closed pipes to cut down waste. However, vertical farming still has clear shortcomings. Running all-day LED lighting and automatic water systems needs plenty of electric power, which raises the production cost of vegetables. So vegetables from vertical farms are usually more expensive than those from ordinary countryside farms at present.
Scientists keep improving related technology to cut down power cost year by year. In the near future, vertical farming will become an important part of city food production and help people get fresher and safer green vegetables conveniently without long-distance transportation from rural areas.
( )26. Where are vertical farms mainly built?
A. Open countryside fields B. Inside tall city buildings
C. Along big rivers D. On hillsides of mountains
( )27. What is the biggest advantage of vertical farming?
A. Cheaper production cost B. Saving land space
C. No water needed for crops D. Able to grow all kinds of fruits
( )28. What provides light for plants inside vertical farms?
A. Natural sunlight B. LED lights
C. Fire light D. Window reflection
( )29. Which disadvantage is mentioned about vertical farming?
A. It pollutes city environment seriously B. It consumes lots of electricity
C. Crops cannot be transported out D. Vegetables taste much worse
( )30. The passage mainly introduces ______.
A. Modern vertical farming B. Changes of traditional farming
C. City food waste problems D. Future city living environment

Xu Xiake was one of the most famous geographers in ancient China during the late Ming Dynasty. Born in a family that loved reading and traveling, he started his long journey across China at the age of 22 and spent over thirty years traveling around most provinces of the country. Unlike many ancient travelers who only visited famous scenic spots for fun, Xu Xiake focused on recording real geography conditions during his trips.
Whenever he arrived at a new place, he carefully wrote down mountains, rivers, rock shapes, local climate and special natural plants in his travel notebook day by day. Even in bad weather such as heavy rain or strong wind, he never stopped his field research. After he passed away, all his notes were collected and made into the great book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake. The book is still very valuable for modern Chinese geologists to study ancient landform changes and natural environment.
Now many middle schools in China organize Xu Xiake-themed outdoor study trips every spring. Teachers lead students to walk along some of Xu Xiake’s old traveling routes. During the trip, students check local geography knowledge in real places and learn Xu Xiake’s spirit of being careful, persistent and curious about nature. Such activities combine textbook knowledge with real life and improve students’ interest in geography learning.
( )31. How old was Xu Xiake when he began his traveling?
A.18 B.22 C.28 D.35
( )32. What did Xu Xiake mainly record during traveling?
A. Local delicious food B. Geography and natural features
C. Ancient building stories D. Old folk songs
( )33. How does his book help modern people?
A. Research landform changes B. Learn ancient transportation
C. Study old farming skills D. Know ancient cooking ways
( )34. Why do schools hold Xu Xiake-themed trips?
A. To visit all famous tourist sites B. To learn geography and good spirits
C. To finish summer holiday homework D. To collect old history books
( )35. We can infer Xu Xiake was ______.
A. lazy and quiet B. careful and persistent
C. rich and lazy D. shy and weak

Nowadays global warming has drawn people’s attention all over the world, and living a low-carbon lifestyle has become a popular idea to protect our earth. Low-carbon life means cutting down unnecessary carbon gas emission in daily small activities.
