He woke suddenly at four o’ clock, the hour when his father had always called him to help with the milking. It was rather strange how his youth habit stuck to him still! His father had been dead for thirty years, yet he still woke at four in the morning. But because it was Mid-Autumn Festival morning, he didn’t try to sleep again.
Why did he feel so awake tonight? It was a clear night with the fullest moon. To him, the moon seemed always large and bright before the daybreak of Mid-Autumn Festival.
He was fifteen years old and working on his father’s farm. He loved his father. He had not known it until one day before Mid-Autumn Festival, when he had overheard (偶然听到) what his father was saying to his mother.
“Axiang, I hate to call Niuniu in the mornings. He’s growing fast and needs sleep. I wish I could manage alone.”
“Well, you can’t,” his mother replied. “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It is time he took his turn.”
“Yes,” his father said slowly. “But I really hate to wake him.”
When he heard these words, something in him spoke, “His father loved him! He had never thought of it before.”
Then on the night before Mid-Autumn Festival, he lay, thinking about the next day. He wished he had a better present, better than those he had ever given to his father, for his father this Mid-Autumn Festival. A thought came to him. It was what he would do and he mustn’t sleep too sound. At a quarter to three he got up and let himself out. A big star hung low far away from the full moon at the other side of the sky. The cows looked at him, sleepy and surprised.
It was early for them, too. He had never milked all alone before, but it seemed almost easy. Milking for once was not a chore. It was something else, a gift to his father who loved him.

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking about something interesting. Without paying attention, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unluckily, the wrong turn took us towards a bridge and we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly upset by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black car by the side of the road. A young man was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to find out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the man if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire (爆胎).
My brother helped him change the flat tire. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said that this had been a bad week for him. Earlier he had gotten into a minor (不严重的) car accident, and now he had this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” my brother said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into a chance to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother during this process. He was able to turn his annoyance (烦恼) over the mistake into positive (积极的) energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I completely missed) even in a different negative (消极的) situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

The Spring Festival Gala Evening (春晚) is an important event to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Many artists perform at the gala to celebrate this ancient Chinese tradition. One of the traditional programs is Beijing Opera. Each year, a number of Chinese Beijing Opera masters appear together to perform classic Beijing Opera pieces. It also attracts many foreigners.
________
As one of the operas that started in Beijing, Beijing Opera has a history of over 200 years. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kun Opera (昆曲) was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Plenty of local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Then the new Beijing Opera formed and became Qianlong’s favorite. Later, it became popular among the public. Beijing Opera gradually became the most influential style of opera in China and was named the national treasure of China.
Some difficulties in learning Beijing Opera
It’s not easy to become a Beijing Opera actor. They have to train from early childhood as they need to master almost all the performing arts, like singing, dancing, and acting. Lulu, an 8-year-old girl who was learning the skills in a group, had to get up at 5:00 a. m. to practice. The biggest problem Lulu had was learning the way of singing. “In the beginning, my throat was painful, because I was using my voice in the wrong way,” she said. Then she asked the teachers for help. With the help of teachers, she improved a lot.
Rethinking the development of Beijing Opera
It’s time to think about Beijing Opera’s development. The young generation (一代) doesn’t grow up in the environment of watching Beijing Opera. Besides, it’s not easy for them to understand the dialogue. Also, the music doesn’t fit young people’s taste. So we still have to rethink the development of its unpopularity among young people so that it can be passed down from generation to generation and become a shining star that never falls through human arts history.
The percentage of the people in different ages watching Beijing Opera

22. What was the biggest problem for Lulu? How did she solve it?

根据第一段“He woke suddenly at four o’clock ... his youth habit stuck to him still! His father had been dead for thirty years, yet he still woke at four in the morning.”
根据第三段“He loved his father. He had not known it until one day ... when he had overheard what his father was saying to his mother.”和第七段“When he heard these words, something in him spoke, ‘His father loved him! He had never thought of it before.’”

根据全文结尾“It was something else, a gift to his father who loved him.”

根据“We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into a chance to serve.”
