Do you work in teams at school? I often do. I enjoy teamwork because sharing ideas excites me. Of course, team activities aren’t always easy. Here are step-by-step tips for smoother teamwork.
Know the goals
Ensure everyone understands the project’s goals. Check the teacher’s instructions carefully and ask questions if unclear. There’s a popular saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you probably won’t get there.”
Pick roles
Everyone should have a role in the team. For example, there should be a leader who helps everyone make decisions. There might be a note-taker who writes down the team’s idea during meetings, and a time-keeper to control the time. There might also be a fact-checker or a group speaker. When picking roles, think about what each member is good at or enjoys doing.
Divide the work
For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn’t always do the same task. It’s good to try new things, even if they’re difficult!
Make a plan
After dividing tasks, create a plan. Use a calendar to list tasks with deadlines. Follow the plan strictly. And if you can’t finish your part on time, tell the others as soon as possible.
Try to be positive and follow the advice above in order. Everything is easier when you’re enjoying yourself in the team.

The team soon faced their first match. When they played against another team from Western High School, they just lost so quickly!
Jack felt awful. But when he noticed Sam crying in a corner, his anger was replaced by feeling sorry for the boy.
Quietly, he walked to Sam. “One failure doesn’t mean everything. After all, we’ve all tried our best!” Seated face to face, Jack spoke out the words that had been on his mind for a long time, “But I think things might be different if we play as a team.”
Sam nodded. From then on, they practised hard together every day.
Months later, they met that team again. When the game started, Jack exchanged an encouraging nod with Sam. This time, they played as if they were one person! Just a few seconds before the game was over, Sam got the ball. Seeing Jack in the best position to score, he passed it at once without thinking. Then Jack scored the game-winning goal!

It was reported in May 2024 that the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA,中国野生动物保护协会) will send giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to the San Diego Zoo in the United States, which is a symbol of a new 10-year period of international conservation partnership. The CWCA has organised experienced caretakers and doctors to go with the pandas to the US. The zoo is getting ready to provide the pandas with a larger and more comfortable living environment. It has also formed a team with special skills related with panda care, daily nursing, and scientific research.
The cooperation (合作) between the CWCA and the San Diego Zoo dates back to 1996 when Bai Yun and Shi Shi became the first pair of pandas to live in the zoo. Giant pandas Hua Mei born in 1999, and Mei Sheng, born in 2003, who used to live there, are the result of China-US giant panda research cooperation. Over the past twenty years, the two sides have cooperated and solved many technical problems, including important discoveries in key areas like panda raising.
Since the 1990s, China has cooperated on giant panda conservation with 20 countries. “International cooperation in fields such as disease prevention and control, treatment, and wild training and reintroduction to the wild, has achieved good results. Giant pandas will facilitate communication between people and let people around the world know China better,” said Li, the leader of the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda.
“Scientific and educational outreach (延伸服务) also serves as a key role in international giant panda exchanges, allowing more people to understand giant pandas, which provides very good support for our efforts in protecting wild giant pandas,” Li said.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The history of the cooperation.
B. The raising of the giant pandas.
C. The lives of the pandas in the US.
D. The process of solving the problems.
10. How many countries has China cooperated with on giant panda conservation?
A. 10. B. 15. C. 20. D. 25.
11. What does the underlined word “facilitate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Expect. B. Create. C. Improve. D. Receive.
12 What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The history of the San Diego Zoo.

C. The daily life of giant pandas in the San Diego Zoo.
D. The importance of scientific and educational outreach in wildlife conservation.

We all enjoy being part of a group—there’s no better work than teamwork, right? Actually, I disagree. Teamwork can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own, which is a much better fit for me. I began to think about why teamwork can make our jobs harder.
To start with, a special personality can make teamwork difficult. There’s often someone on the team who puts his or her personal needs first. He or she is often selfish (自私的). The team often goes along with several persons like this. Just one person like this can make teamwork hard. With several persons like this working together, it’s even harder.
Not having enough time together can also make teamwork challenging. For example, I was once on a team where we never had as much time as we needed to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together.
A final reason why teamwork is difficult is that there’s often no training on how to work on a team. You can’t just get together in a room and expect to work well with each other. You need to build trust with your team members. Think of football players: They aren’t just given a ball and told to play. They practise and they train to play well together.
Teamwork can be hard, but working alone has its challenges, too. When my computer doesn’t work, I don’t have an IT person to turn to. When I have a great idea, I don’t have anyone to share it with to see if it is really a great one. Don’t get me wrong—I still like my team of one and enjoy making all of the important decisions myself. But now I realise what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past. I also get to know how good teamwork could be if done correctly. So, one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.
13. Why did the writer leave his office job?
A. He needed a quiet working environment.
B. Teamwork became challenging for him.
C. Working alone could make the job harder.
D. Working at home is very convenient now.
14. Which word is close to the underlined word “personality”?
A. Skill. B. Habit. C. Hobby. D. Character.
15. How does the writer develop his idea in paragraph 4?
A. By listing the reason for teamwork training.
B. By giving an example of the football team.
C. By showing different ways of starting teamwork training.
D. By mentioning the difficulty of teamwork training.
16. What does the writer think of working alone?
A. It has no challenges at all.
B. It is always better than teamwork.
C. It also has some disadvantages.
D. It is sometimes difficult but interesting.

Their training lasts from 6:30 am to 10 pm, and they have spent a lot of time on mixed doubles practice. Their hard work paid off at the Paris Olympics, where they won the first mixed doubles gold medal for the Chinese team.
