Possible version
Dear Jim,
Thrilled to hear about your “Discover the Fun in Sports” event! I suggest organizing a fun relay race. Students shall be divided into 4-5 teams with 5 members each to participate in a 30-meter relay race, which involves completing simple tasks at the halfway point, passing the baton, and prioritizing fun.
It’s perfect because it needs no professional skills—all students can join. With simple tasks like baton passing and short runs, it boosts teamwork and laughter. Most importantly, it lets everyone feel sports’ joy easily, fitting your event theme well.
Hope this idea helps! Let me know if you need more thoughts.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

(Text 10)
W: Good morning, everyone. Today we’re going to look at the wide differences in family life between the rich and the poor in Victorian times. Let’s begin with the upper classes. In Victorian times, the upper classes made up less than 3% of the population, yet held more than 90% of the country’s wealth. Most of their servants were very poorly paid, but were always living in the homes of upper-class Victorian families, so they didn’t have to pay for housing, food and clothing. The money which they did earn, they sent to their families. Many servants came from the countryside. Among them were cooks, cleaners, gardeners and so on. The family would also employ a child’s nurse whose main role was to care for the children. She was responsible for teaching the children how to behave and taking care of them when they were ill. Nurses did not, however, educate the children. Generally, children from wealthy families didn’t attend school outside the family home. Tutors would come to the house to do this. Now, the Victorian upper classes have the reputation of being quite cruel; but this wasn’t always the case. They were also quite generous. Some schools were set up with money from the upper classes so that poor children could have some form of education. Additionally, most Victorian parents were very proud of their children. This goes against the common idea that parents were very strict with their children. In fact, the opposite was generally the rule. However, the situation for lower class families was very different. Let’s have a look.

When 17-year-old Lin Hao first entered his old and damaged school library in Guizhou’s mountainous area, his rough hands touched outdated encyclopedias covered in plastic from the 1990s. These books still say pandas are endangered, he whispered, remembering the modern tablets his city classmates used during a school exchange. That was when he decided to bridge the gap.
Inspired by a documentary about urban book donation programs, Lin spent his summer creating a bilingual website called Books Without Borders, using Mandarin and English to connect donors with rural schools. The platform allowed donors to send secondhand books directly to under-resourced schools, complete with tracking codes to follow each book’s journey.
Initial progress was slow. By mid-September, only 23 books had been registered. Unaffected, Lin partnered with his English teacher to create video appeals featuring students sharing their reading dreams.
Lin’s persistence shone through. A breakthrough came when a viral TikTok video showed a girl in Lin’s class receiving a donated science encyclopedia. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered, “This is the first book I’ve ever owned.”
The emotional video sparked a chain reaction. By November, over 5,000 books flooded into 12 rural schools. Local newspapers called Lin the teenage librarian, while tech-companies offered free server support. During Spring Festival, Lin received handwritten letters from remote villages—one child drew a stick-figure version of him delivering books via rainbow-colored drones.
Now displayed in the provincial museum, Lin’s original website blueprint includes a heartfelt note: Knowledge should flow like rivers, not trickle (涓流) like leaks. His next project? Installing solar-powered e-book stations in mountain villages. Though some doubt his plans can grow, Lin keeps working—proving that even in the mountains, determination can build bridges to the world.

By the late 1960s, abstract painter Harold Cohen had represented Britain at important festivals with his oil paintings and was seeking a new challenge. “Maybe there are more interesting things going on outside my studio than inside it,” he thought. Cohen turned from the canvas to the screen, using computers to find new ways of creating art. In the late 1960s, he created a program that he named Aaron. It was the first artificial intelligence software in the world of fine art, and Cohen first presented Aaron in 1974 at the University of California, Berkeley.
Now, with AI dominating the headlines, a new exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, “Harold Cohen: Aaron”, running through June 2024, draws attention to Cohen’s pioneering work. The Whitney is offering something deeper than most previous Aaron exhibits: a real-time experience, in which visitors can watch the software produce art.
Cohen seeded Aaron with all sorts of knowledge: about basic objects, physics, and fundamental techniques of drawing. Aaron uses this knowledge to follow instructions, complete tasks, and make decisions like human beings—a very different approach from today’s generative AI art programs, which don’t draw from scratch (从头开始) but rather rely on databases of images. Versions of Aaron still generate output, but anything done after Cohen’s death in 2016 is not considered genuine.
The Whitney is performing two versions of Cohen’s software, along with the art that each produced before Cohen died. The 2001 version, Aaron KCAT, generates images of figures and plants and projects them onto a wall more than ten feet high, while the 2007 version produces jungle-like scenes. The software will also create art physically, on paper, for the first time since the 1990s. “It is absolutely thrilling,” said Christiane Paul, the museum’s director of digital art, “to have one of those remarkable treasures of digital art in the collection.”
28. What was Aaron born out of?
A. The university’s support. B. The museum’s donation.
C. Cohen’s imagination. D. Cohen’s curiosity.
29. What can visitors do in the “Harold Cohen: Aaron” exhibition?
A. Observe Aaron creating art on the spot. B. Generate images with the help of Aaron.
C. Learn about the physical rules in art. D. See the original 1960s version of Aaron.
30. What makes Aaron different from modern AI art programs?
A. Its ability to assign tasks. B. Its use of modern techniques.
C. Its capability to make choices. D. Its dependence on existing database.
31. What does the underlined word “projects” in the last paragraph mean ?
A. Plans. B. Throws. C. Displays. D. Draws.

One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important people say. That’s what people who get promoted say. But working long hours doesn’t drive better results. Never taking a vacation won’t lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time?
In 2016, researchers from Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to figure it out. They found busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly, these status attributions are heavily influenced by our own beliefs about social mobility. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. This culture of busyness is making it hard for employees to find work-life balance. According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout. Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am. It sounds self-righteous (自以为是的) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
By rejecting the myth that business equals worth, we free ourselves and others from exhaustion. True success isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter and finding balance. Let’s redefine what it means to be productive — and start valuing rest as much as effort.
32. Why does the author sometimes say “busy” even when he isn’t ?
A. He is actually occupied. B. It is expected of important people.
C. It will avoid lengthy conversations. D. It will lead to a promotion.
33. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings of the 2016 study?
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
34. What is a direct result of the culture of busyness mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. It poses a challenge to work-life balance.
B. It improves employees’ work efficiency.
C. It helps people gain high social status.
D. It puts highly engaged employees at risk of burnout.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advise employees to achieve a work-life balance.
B. To argue against the culture of equating busyness with worth.
C. To introduce a study on people’s attitude towards busyness.
D. To share his personal experience of overcoming a bad habit.

The forest had always been a place of mystery and wonder for Leo. Yet, today, it was a place where he searched anxiously. His heart beat fast with fear. His golden retriever(寻回犬) , Max, had run into the woods after a squirrel during their afternoon walk and had not returned.
For hours, Leo had wandered, his calls for Max growing desperate. The sun began to set, casting long shadows that seemed to swallow the path behind him. The cheerful singing of birds was replaced by the unsettling sound of an owl and the rustle of unseen creatures in the bushes. A cold anxiety settled in his stomach. He was not just losing Max; he was losing daylight, and with it, any hope of finding his way out.
Just as despair was about to swallow him, he tripped over a narrow, hidden path he hadn’t noticed before. Driven by a final hope, he pushed through the dense leaves. The path led him to a small, hidden clearing. There, in the fading light, he saw a sight that made his blood run cold. Max was there, lying on his side, sobbing softly. His back leg was trapped in the cruel, rusty jaws of an old, discarded animal trap.
Leo rushed to his side, his own fear forgotten in the face of Max’s pain. The dog licked his hand weakly, his eyes mixed with trust and pain. Leo’s hands trembled as he examined the trap. It was heavy and stubborn, its metal teeth dug deep into Max’s flesh. He pulled with all his might, but it wouldn’t move. He had no tools, no phone signal, and darkness was closing in fast. He was alone, utterly unprepared for a crisis like this in the heart of the wild.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Looking into the pain in Max’s eyes, Leo knew that panic was useless.
Finally, with a clear click, the trap came loose.
