Many of us are familiar with disasters like fires, earthquakes, droughts, and floods. But sometimes, Mother Nature surprises us, and brings a terrible weather event. Here are some examples of uncommon weather.
Strange rain: in 2005, a small town in Serbia experienced a strange event. It rained frogs! People saw thousands of small frogs jumping in the streets. Some thought a plane carrying frogs might have exploded (爆炸). Scientists thought a tornado (strong windstorms moving in a circle) picked up the frogs from a lake and dropped them in the town.
Tornadoes of Fire: Tornadoes don’t seem to be dangerous enough, but some of them can be made of fire. When a wildfire reaches very high temperatures, it causes the air to become hot and to rise. Cooler air rushes in to replace (替代) hot air. This causes strong winds. These winds suck away (吸走) burning plants and even the fire itself. When this happens, just as it did in Denver on March 14th, 2014, a tornado of fire was produced.
Great Balls of Ice: In 1942, hundreds of thousands of years’ skeletons (骨骼) were found under the ice of Lake Roopkund in the Himalayas. Many had holes in their skulls (头盖骨). But they weren’t hurt in any other way. Scientists thought the people must have been hit from above. But for years, they haven’t found out the cause of their deaths.
Today, scientists think these people were killed by giant hailstones. The blocks of ice grew bigger and bigger and turned into hail and the hail fell to the ground, often at a speed of over 160 kilometers an hour. Unlucky people at Lake Roopkund had nowhere to run away, so they were all killed by the hailstones.
43. What strange weather event happened in a small town in Serbia in 2005?
A. It rained fish. B. It rained fire. C. It rained stones. D. It rained frogs.
44. What is the primary cause of a tornado of fire?
A. A plane explosion. B. A wildfire reaching very high temperatures.
C. Cool air rushing in suddenly. D. A large amount of burning plants.
45. Why did scientists believe that the people at Lake Roopkund were hit from above?
A. Because they had holes in their skulls. B. Because they were found under the ice.
C. Because they were near a lake. D. Because they were hit by a tornado.
46. What does the underlined word “hailstones” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Heavy rain. B. Strong winds. C. Balls of ice. D. Burning plants.
47. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Unusual Weather B. Mother Nature
C. The Dangers of Natural Disasters D. Unusual Tornadoes
D
Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also be challenging and lead to culture shock and feelings of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany, Italy, right after college, I fell in love with the scenery. Who wouldn’t be? The rolling hills, beautiful buildings and delicious food made me happy. I was excited about my new beginning. But then, I started to notice little things.
As an American, I’m used to a bit of personal space. Where I’m from, it’s quite impolite to knock into someone or stand very closely. This is different from the truth in Italy.
Because there were no translation (翻译) apps at that time, not knowing the language was also challenging. Sometimes, I would feel helpless. However, Italians like to speak with their hands — a habit I’ve carried over till this day. Gestures (手势) can express their ideas and feelings.
Of course, just because you’ve experienced culture shock in one country doesn’t mean you won’t do so in another.
Years later, when I moved to China, my experience was special. The culture there was something very foreign to me—down to how to buy things. Before moving there, I had never heard of WeChat or Alipay. I wasn’t prepared at all for how important these things would be. Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I am travelling around the world and that I should be happy with what I’m taking in.
American-British writer Bill Bryson said that “... the greatest reward (回报) of travel is ... to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted (被认为是理所当然的).”
48. What is the correct order of the passage?
a. The writer moved to Italy.
b. The writer moved to China.
c. The writer graduated from college.
d. The writer learned to be happy with what he was taking in.
A. a-c-b-d B. c-a-b-d C. d-c-a-b D. a-b-c-d
49. What helped the writer understand what Italians were saying?
A. Pictures. B. Gestures. C. Expressions. D. Translation apps.
50. What happened to the writer when arriving in China?
A. He learned to speak Chinese.
B. He used WeChat and Alipay well.
C. He experienced culture shock again.
D. He began to buy many things online.
51. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How to deal with different cultures.
B. How to search for a best place to visit.
C. The value of experiencing culture shock.
D. The trouble of travelling around the world.
52. Which is the right structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to share with you an unforgettable experience of voluntary work.
Last month, an international concert was held in Shenzhen. I took part in it as a volunteer. Before the concert, a foreign musician lost his way when he came out of the bathroom. He could not speak Chinese, so I used English to talk with him and finally guided him to his seat.
This experience made me realize how meaningful it is to do voluntary work. When I offer to help, I can feel the joy of supporting others. Besides, it also develops my skills of solving problems.
Do you have any interesting volunteering experiences? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
