Shortly after I graduated from college, I moved to a new state to start a full-time job. One day at work, I found myself wanting to go traveling. Once I’d saved up enough money, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to travel by myself for the first time in my life. So I quickly started doing research on where I’d like to go.
I had never traveled alone before, so I decided to sign up for a guided group that was going to Thailand. This gave me a sense of security (安全). It felt like a great way not only to try being alone and meeting strangers but also doing something that sounded really fun for two weeks.
The Thailand trip forced me out of so many comfort zones (舒适区) that ended up being one of the big turning points of my life. The time I spent in Thailand finding my way around airports and taxis alone, meeting a group of strangers, and doing rock climbing with them in often remote parts of the country, ended up being one of the greatest experiences of my life. Up until this point I had always been shy and very careful to avoid danger and mistakes, but this travel experience inspired me to become different. It showed me a brave, strong, and independent side of myself that went on to influence my life greatly when I returned home.
When I got back, I pretty much dedicated my life to spending as much time as possible doing activities like climbing, hiking, or backpacking especially things that I once thought I wasn’t “capable of” or was “too scared of Today, about 6 years later, I’m an outdoor empowerment coach and backpacking educator.
My trip to Thailand was just what I needed to make that change. It showed me what was possible. It changed the path of my life.
4. Why was the author’s trip to Thailand special?
A. Because it was planned all by himself.
B. Because it was his first trip after college.
C. Because it was achieved by quitting his job.
D. Because it was the first time he had traveled alone.
5. What can we learn about the author’s trip?
A. It was a guided trip. B. It was free of charge.
C. It was about 6 weeks long. D. It was designed for young travelers.
6. What did the author do during the trip?
A. He learned to drive. B. He practiced rock climbing.
C. He explored many remote areas alone. D. He met his best friend for the first time.
7. How has the author changed after the trip?
A. He made friends more easily. B. He fell in love with traveling.
C. He became a brave outdoor type. D. He started staying away from danger.

The Amazon rainforest is as pristine (处于原始状态的) a place as most people can imagine, but even there, the effects of a changing climate are playing out. Previous research found that some birds in the Amazon are experiencing drops that may be related to climate change. Now, new research suggests that as the Amazon’s dry season has gotten hotter, some species are starting to evolve.
For the new study, researchers studied 77 non-migratory species over a 40-year period. They reported in the journal Science Advances that 36 species have lost weight, as much as 2 percent of their body weight every ten years since 1980. Meanwhile, all the species became smaller in body size, while a third grew longer wings.
The researchers themselves are unsure what advantage the wing length changes give the birds, but smaller birds may have an easier time keeping cool. In general, smaller animals have a larger ratio (比例) of surface area to body size, so they dissipate more heat faster than a bigger animal. Less available food, such as fruit or insects, in dryer weather might lead to smaller body size.
“Think about a fighter plane. It has short wings and is heavy. It has to go really fast to stay high in the air, so it uses up plenty of energy,” says ecologist Vitek Jirinec, who led the new study, while “a glider (滑翔机) almost uses no power to stay high in the air, because it’s got these long wings, and it’s light.”
For those who wonder why a small body change in a small homebody bird should matter, Jirinec points to how our actions have effects we don’t always see — such as changing the size and shape of animals half a world away.
“We think of Amazonia as a pristine place, full of life, untouched by people, away from deforestation,” Jirinec says. “But it looks like no, not necessarily.”
8. What does the new study find out about some bird species in the Amazon rainforest?
A. They have changed physically.
B. They are dying out due to hotter weather.
C. They have a smaller population than before.
D. They have migrated as a result of less rainfall.
9. What does the underlined word “dissipate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Speed up. B. Keep track of. C. Give out. D. Make use of.
10. Why does Vitek Jirinec mention a fighter plane and a glider in paragraph 4?
A. To study how birds speed up in the air.
B. To show the advantage of birds’ longer wings.
C. To describe how birds’ wings move when flying.
D. To introduce the difficulty birds can meet when flying.
11. What does Vitek Jirinec think of the Amazon rainforest?
A. It isn’t as attractive as it was.
B. It is making a quick recovery.
C. It is being influenced by human activities.
D. It isn’t suitable for some bird species any longer.
D
In principle, it sounds simple: eat less and move more. Yet, despite all the calorie counting, dieting and exercising, worldwide obesity (过度肥胖) rates just keep going up. So why hasn’t this approach to weight control worked?
One possibility is that we haven’t tried hard enough. Perhaps we have lacked the discipline and willpower to keep healthy dietary and exercise habits — a challenge made more difficult today for those surrounded by inexpensive, tasty, highly processed foods.
Or perhaps the problem is the focus on “calorie balance” itself. In a recent paper, my team members and I question the basic assumption of whether taking in more calories than you burn really is the primary cause of obesity. We argue that the evidence actually points the other way: we are driven to overeat because we are getting fatter.
This may seem incredible, but consider the adolescent growth spurt (青春期猛长期). As their growth rate speeds up, teenagers may eat hundreds of calories more each day than they used to. Does this “overeating” cause the rapid growth? Or does the rapid growth, which requires more calories to build new body tissues, make teens hungrier so they eat more? Clearly the latter, as adults won’t grow taller, no matter how much they eat.
The key to how this works in obesity is the fat-storage chemical insulin (胰岛素). Processed, rapidly digestible carbohydrates (碳水化合物) — foods like sweetened breakfast bread, French fries and sugary drinks — raise our insulin levels too high very shortly. This causes our fat cells to take in and store too many calories, leaving fewer available for the rest of the body. A few hours after eating a high-carb meal, the number of calories in the bloodstream declines, so we get hungrier sooner after eating.
Replacing processed carbs with high-fat foods — such as nuts, full-fat milk, olive oil and dark chocolate — lowers insulin levels, making more calories from the meal available for the rest of the body. Contrary to popular belief, higher-fat foods may help lose body fat, a possibility supported by clinical trials comparing high-fat diets with low-fat ones.
12. What is the focus of the author’s paper?
A. The real reason behind obesity. B. The problem with modern diets.
C. The difficulty of keeping exercise habits. D. The types of weight control approaches.
13. Why does the author mention “the adolescent growth spurt” in paragraph 4?
A. To clarify this concept to the readers. B. To add some background information.
C. To provide some advice for teenagers. D. To support the argument in paragraph 3.
14. What is wrong with foods like sweetened breakfast bread?
A. They cause an imbalance between calories consumed and expended.
B. They produce much more energy than our body requires.
C. They take a long time to digest fully in our stomach
D. They keep our insulin levels too high for too long.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Is Your Ideal Body Weight? B. What on Earth Is Healthy Food?
C. Why You Need to Eat Fat to Lose Fat? D. Why You Should Eat Differently from Teens?

One summer, I went on a four-day desert trip with my family. On the train, I looked out of the window, expecting something surprising to happen during this desert trip. I was very excited all the way, looking around and talking about what would happen in the desert with my parents.
Finally the train stopped and we arrived at the destination. The vastness of the desert shocked each of us. Everywhere we could see yellow sand, and there were no trees.
Before long, we would start our desert hike. We had to walk 18 kilometers per day for four days. Before we set off, the guide explained the rules to us. We’d better put on sun-protective clothing and hold onto the hiking pole (登山杖) all the way.
Then we were told that there were two routes that we could choose from. One was down the hill. There were rivers and vegetation. The road was relatively flat, easy to walk, and it was not so hot. The other route was through the real desert. It was all sand and there was no water. Besides, dust storms sometimes happened. Along the second route, we would have to go step by step, and our feet could often get stuck in the sand. There would be a rest area every five kilometers, where we could drink water and eat some food. If we really couldn’t go on, we could quit and take the car. However, those who persisted to the end would get a surprise.
Everyone was discussing with excitement after they heard the rules. Finally, most people decided to take the first route, considering the dangers along the difficult route. To be honest, I was hesitant at first. I was worried about the difficulties we might get into along the second route. However, I was more willing to challenge myself. So I finally chose the difficult route.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Soon, we set off.

【答案】Dear Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 2 student in our school. Learning that the English reading club will be open, I’m writing to apply for it.
To begin with, I am enthusiastic about reading English books and have read a large variety of English books. Besides, I am eager to make more friends in the club, with whom I can communicate on what I have read. I’d like to express my sincere hope that I can be admitted to the club.
Your early reply will be highly appreciated.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
Soon, we set off. Full of energy, we met with no challenge at all in the first two days. However, as we went deeper into the desert, the situation changed. The weather became hotter and drier. All my clothes were soaked with sweat. My every step seemed to take all my strength. Our destination seemed to be out of reach. I was so exhausted that I couldn’t help crying desperately to my parents, “I don’t think I can go on any further.” Seeing this, they just kept encouraging me not to give up, “Believe in yourself! You can do it!”
With their encouragement, I gathered my strength and moved on. With our great efforts, we walked all the trip in the end and I was the only child who managed to walk through the entire desert! When I stood on the stage with the award and watched the crowd cheering and applauding for my persistence, I was so proud of myself. This experience became a reminder which helped me challenge every “desert” later in my life.
