How to comfort your friends
Your friends may turn to you when things go wrong. Knowing how to comfort your friends isn’t always easy. Here are some ways you can comfort your friends when they’re feeling blue.
1
A cup of coffee or a cake might be just the pick-me-up they need. If you’re on your way to your friends’ house, stop by a store and pick up something fun for them. Hopefully, a surprise will cheer your friends up.
2
They might know how you can help. Maybe they just need you to sit with them quietly. Ask your friends before you do anything to make sure that you’re doing the right things. You can ask by simply saying, “Is there anything I can do?”
3
It’s not always easy to guess why your friends are upset, so it’s best to just ask them if you aren’t sure. Try something like, “Hey, what’s going on? I can tell you’re upset. I want to know the problem you have.”
4
Sometimes the best way to comfort someone is to be quiet. Let your friends talk as much (or as little) as they want to, and try not to stop them. The more you let them talk out, the better they’ll feel. Look them in the eyes to show that you’re listening and encourage them to talk more.
5
Pick a message that will make them laugh or feel happy. If you can’t see your friends in person that day, try sending them a funny picture. Or, send them a message to tell them how much they mean to you. It will help them feel much better.
A.Find out what their problems are.
B.Listen to them talk.
C.Ask your friends what you can do.
D.Send them kind messages.
E.Bring your friends something nice.

The Taklamakan Desert is the biggest desert in China and the second largest moving desert in the world. 1 and now has a 3,046-kilometre-long sand-blocking belt(防沙带)around it. The belt is the longest in the world and is completed by planting desert poplar trees, red willows and so on.
2 . As we all know, the desert is very large. It covers about 76% of Xinjiang’s desert area, and its sand dunes(沙丘)are very tall, some reaching as high as 300 metres. So more time, money, and effort are required. The dry climate adds more challenges. There is only about 50 millimetres (毫米)of rain in the desert each year, 3 . Because there is not enough water, plants are hard to grow. Another problem is that the Taklamakan Desert is one of the most active areas for sandstorms(沙尘暴)in China.
So finishing this sand-blocking belt is a big success. Experts say it is a great achievement in human history, and people’s hard work pays off. The sand-blocking belt protects areas with water and plants in the desert from sandstorms, improves the local environment, and supports farming. 4 .
A local farmer said he was happy about the project and hoped it would continue to help fight desertification(荒漠化), the process of becoming a desert. In the coming years, 5 .
A.Xinjiang will continue to expand(扩大)the sand-blocking belt by 2030.
B.and over 4,000 millimetres (毫米)of water is lost through evaporation(蒸发).

If you’ve ever swum in the pool, you’ve probably enjoyed creating your own waves. Unlike solid objects, water is easy to move around. 1
Now imagine what happens in the ocean when an earthquake happens underground. If you’ve ever felt a big earthquake or seen one on television, you know that it has the power to shake the ground and move large buildings. When a great earthquake happens under the ocean floor, the earthquake’s large energy is transferred to the water above it. 2 The word comes from the Japanese words tsu (harbor) and nami (wave).
Normal ocean waves have an average wavelength (波长) of about 100 meters and an average height of about 2 meters. 3 Travelling at up to about 800 kilometers per hour in the deep ocean, a tsunami might be at a height of as little as 0.9 meters, which makes it almost impossible to be noticed, even for a ship in the area.
4 As it approaches shallow (浅的) waters, the wave speed drops below about 80 kilometers per hour. The wavelength also decreases much, but amplitude-the height of the wave-increases greatly, leading to the huge wall of water along coastlines, which causes great damage to coastal areas.
About 80% of tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean. Tsunamis cannot be prevented. 5 The systems can give as much advance warning as possible to people who live along the coastline. For example, there are tsunami warning signs and warning sirens (警报器) atop nearby hills along Japanese coastlines. And many Japanese coastal communities have built tsunami walls, floodgates and others to stop or change the direction of water from incoming tsunamis.
A.Then it creates a series of water waves called a tsunami.
B.Tsunamis are ocean waves caused by larger earthquakes.
C.But the areas often hit by them have developed warning systems.
D.As a tsunami comes near to a coastline, things begin to change greatly.
E.The harder you push with your hands, the bigger the waves will be.
F.However, a tsunami can have a wavelength of 193 kilometers or more.

Do you often have negative thoughts? Do you and your friends often complain (抱怨) about things? 1
● Find the positive, however small
Bad things happen to all of us, but the most important thing is to focus on the positive. For example, next time you are caught in traffic, think about how great it is that you can finish listening to your favourite music. If you don’t have much in your fridge, get creative and think of what you can invent with the ingredients you have. 2
● Focus on now
It’s easy to think too much about things that have already happened and to get worried about what will happen tomorrow. 3 But remember, you can’t change the past, and no one can control the future, so the best thing is to focus on the present.
● 4
Being around negative people will make you feel negative too. Spend time with people who will make you laugh and help you believe in yourself, not those who spend all day complaining. It’s hard to feel negative when you have positive people around you.
● Be kind to others
One of the best ways to make yourself feel good is to help others. 5 Spending time helping other people can give you a better perspective (视角) on life and make you value what you have.
A.We all do this sometimes.
B.Find positive friends and partners.
C.Always remind yourself to work hard.
D.It can be exciting to try something new.
E.Find ways to volunteer in your community.
F.The following can help you feel positive about life.

Water is important in our life, but sometimes water can be dangerous for kids. So we must pay attention to the kids’ safety in water. Water safety begins at home or in the pool. 1
Be careful of the hot water. 2 These young kids have thinner skin than older kids and adults, so it’s easier for them to be burnt. Staying in hot water that’s 60℃ for just 3 seconds can give a child a third-degree burn. You can reduce the risk by testing the water with your wrist or elbow before placing your kid in the bath.
3 The bathroom is full of danger for young kids. Never leave a young child alone in the bathroom, especially while he or she is bathing. Remember to put away hairdryers (吹风机) and other electrical appliances to avoid the risk .
Never let kids swim alone. Swimming in the water may make kids feel great. As they move in the water, many small muscle groups are working to help them keep their balance. 4 For example, many types of swimming need repeated arm movements. Over time, the movements can cause shoulder and neck injuries. So it’s dangerous when they stay in the water alone. They may even drown (溺亡). So kids are not supposed to swim without their parents’ company.
5 To keep the kids safe, we need to learn more about what we should do. After all, everyone has only one life!
A.Everyone should realize the importance of water safety.
B.Hot water can be dangerous, especially for kids under five.
C.Here are some suggestions for you.
D.Watch out for danger in the bathroom.

Have you ever thought that a simple nod or shake of the head could cause misunderstanding? 1 Even worse, these common gestures can even make you doubt your own ways of expression when you are misunderstood by others.
In most Western countries and China, nodding the head up and down means “yes” or agreement. Shaking the head from side to side means “no” or disagreement. 2 Parents are happy when their babies learn these gestures correctly.
However, this pattern is not followed everywhere. In some cultures, the meanings are totally different. For example, in parts of India, Bulgaria and Greece, nodding actually means “no” and shaking the head means “yes.” 3 Tourists often feel confused when locals seem to disagree with everything they say. This can lead to funny or even awkward situations in restaurants and shops.
Head movements can express more than just yes or no. In Japan, a slight tilt (倾斜) of the head may show politeness or listening. 4 In Turkey, a quick upward tilt of the head combined with a clicking sound means “no”. These differences require careful observation.
When visiting a new country, watch how local people use body language. 5 Moreover, when you are in doubt, use clear words directly to avoid further confusion.
A.This surprising difference has brought problems for visitors.
B.If you are not sure, ask politely or use simple words.

There are lots of natural disasters every year. 1 Typhoons are some of the worst storms. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. 2 When the air gets hot enough, it starts to move high up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets hotter, it starts to move quickly, making wind. 3 The hotter the air gets, the faster the wind moves. A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. It’s the centre of the typhoon. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye.

How to Write a Good Poem
Poetry is a creative way to express your ideas and feelings in words. Many writers enjoy poetry because there are no strict rules to follow. However, some useful tips can still help you write better poems and enjoy the process more.
1 Reading poems written by others can help you understand different styles and ideas. In this way, you may discover what kind of poetry you like best. You can also ask your teacher for advice or visit a library to find more books about poetry.
When thinking about what to write, pay attention to what’s around you. 2 It can be anything from your favorite sport to a place you have visited. You can also choose topics that are meaningful to you, such as friendship or protecting the environment.
Before you begin writing, it is a good idea to collect your thoughts. 3 Write down anything that interests you, including colors, sounds, or small moments in daily life. These notes can later help you create your poem more easily.
After you finish your poem, don’t forget to read it aloud. 4 By doing this, you may find some parts that sound unclear or need improvement. You can also share your poem with others and listen to their advice.
5 The more you practice, the more confident you will become. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas or different styles. Writing poetry should be both enjoyable and meaningful.
A.Practice is the key to improving your writing skills.
B.The best way to become a better writer is to be a reader first.
C.Here’s how to read your poems.
D.Saying a poem out loud can bring it to life.
E.It is also important to learn some basic writing skills.

Eating customs around the world
Food brings people together across cultures, but table manners can sometimes create quite a cultural divide. What seems normal in one country might leave visitors confused in another. 1
In Western countries, making noise while eating in public is often considered to be impolite. 2 This is because noise is a sign that you are really enjoying the meal. It also helps mix air with the noodles, making them taste better. So to some Asian chefs, the noise that you make is the best praise.
In Russia, people believe that passing a salt shaker directly from one person to another leads to an argument between them. Instead, salt should be placed on the table for the other person to pick up. While passing the salt at the dinner table, try not to spill (洒出来) it, or it could lead to an argument as well. 3 Then, everything should turn out just fine.
4 If you order one after 11 a.m., or after lunch or dinner, the waiter might be a little surprised. This is because Italians think that milk is hard to digest and believe drinking it late in the day can hurt your stomach.
In India, it’s very common to eat with your hands. However, there is an important rule: you should only use your right hand. 5 For this reason, people in India often use bread to scoop up their food.
So next time before you go traveling, you’d better learn some basic customs of the country you are visiting. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes because culture shock happens everywhere. What matters the most is that we should try to get along well with locals and show them our respect.
A.However, it is encouraged in Japan!
B.Let’s get to know some eating customs around the world.
C.In Italy, it is said that coffee with milk should only be enjoyed at breakfast.
D.The left hand, considered unclean, must not be used for eating.
E.You should never talk with others while eating in public.
F.It is polite to share food with others in foreign countries.
G.If this happens, you should throw some spilled salt over your left shoulder.

Jenny says she is interested in the stories behind each stamp. She often asks me about Chinese stamps and shows some of them to me. Now we are very good friends.
Today, people connect with each other through the Internet. They don’t use stamps often. 4 We both find we can learn many things from the small, colorful pieces of paper. Jenny tells me she even uses the stamps to share things about China with the people around her.
5 As many people say: A life without a hobby is like food without salt.
A.It makes me very happy.
B.Truly, a hobby is fun and useful.
C.But Jenny and I still like using stamps.
D.So it becomes easier to collect stamps.
E.Now I prefer collecting postcards to stamps.
F.Because of stamps, we got to know each other.

Most of us know some simple geographical facts, like the highest mountain or the deepest ocean in the world. But for some surprising facts about our planet, you will have to read on! 1
2
When we think of deserts, we usually picture sand and camels. However, in the science world, a desert is a place that gets less than 250 mm of water each year. Although Antarctica is mostly covered in ice, it gets only about 55 mm of water every year. So it’s in fact a desert!
Russia has 11 time zones.
Russia is the largest country in the world. 3 It has an island called Big Diomede. It is very close to Little Diomede, an island in the US. Although the two islands are only about 4 km from each other, they’re in different time zones. So there is a 21-hour time difference between them!
The Dead Sea is getting smaller.
The Dead Sea is the lowest place on land, and it’s very important in the world. 4 It used to cover about 1,000 square kilometres, but now it covers only about 600 square kilometres.
Australia is wider than the moon.
Australia is about 4,000 km wide, while the moon is only 3,400 km across. 5
The earth may be over 4.5 billion years old, but it can still surprise us. It just goes to show what an amazing planet we live on!
A.And it covers many areas.

【答案】1.E 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.D
【导语】本文主要介绍了五种安慰心情不好的朋友的实用方法,分别是送小礼物、询问能帮忙的事、弄清烦恼缘由、耐心倾听、发送暖心消息。
【详解】
1.根据本段“A cup of coffee or a cake might be just the pick-me-up they need...pick up something fun for them...a surprise will cheer your friends up.”可知,本段主要讲述给朋友带去咖啡、小零食等惊喜好物来安慰对方,E选项“给朋友带些贴心好物”承接本段内容,概括本段主旨。
2.根据后文“Maybe they just need you to sit with them quietly...You can ask by simply saying,‘Is there anything I can do?’”可知,本段围绕询问自己能帮朋友做什么展开,C选项“问问朋友你可以做什么”总领全段,契合段落主题。
3.根据后文“so it’s best to just ask them...‘Hey, what’s going on? I can tell you’re upset. I want to know the problem you have.’”可知,本段重在主动询问、弄清朋友烦恼的缘由,A选项“弄清楚他们遇到的难题”概括本段核心内容。
4.根据后文“Let your friends talk as much (or as little) as they want to, and try not to stop them...Look them in the eyes to show that you’re listening”可知,本段重点是安静倾听朋友倾诉,B选项“倾听他们倾诉”贴合段落大意。
5.根据后文“try sending them a funny picture. Or, send them a message to tell them how much they mean to you.”可知,本段介绍发送趣味图片、暖心消息安慰朋友,D选项“给他们发送暖心消息”统领本段内容。

C.This can create real problems for travelers and business people.
D.These gestures are so natural that we rarely think about them.
E.Some common patterns are still widely accepted in most countries.

4.本段讲头部动作的其他含义,举例日本和土耳其。空白处前说日本轻微倾斜表示礼貌或倾听,空白处后说土耳其的例子。因此空白处应解释日本倾斜头部的具体含义。选项F“It does not always mean agreement, but rather ‘I am paying attention.’”(它并不总是表示同意,而是‘我在注意听’)符合。
5.本段建议去新国家时观察当地人肢体语言,空白处后说“此外,有疑问时直接用清晰话语”。因此空白处应给出另一个建议。选项B“If you are not sure, ask politely or use simple words.”(如果不确定,礼貌地询问或使用简单的词语)与后文“use clear words”一致。

I understood the meaning of the old saying, “Every coin has two sides.” Though I had left the protection of my parents, I became independent and learned how to fit into a new environment.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in the Philippines (菲律宾). 4
What should we do when a typhoon happens?
• Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from it.
• Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your cars!
• 5
• If you’re told to go to a safer place, do it right now.

As readers, we are always looking for ways to improve: we want to read more, read faster and achieve a better understanding. Improvement sometimes happens by breaking bad reading habits. However, many people don’t realize the problems they have in the reading process. 1
Reading at the wrong speed.
Many readers pay little or no attention to their reading speed and that is a mistake. Whether you are reading too fast or too slow, the reading experience will be badly influenced. 2 Reading at a speed that is too high can influence your understanding of what you read.
Not paying attention to your reading environment.

G.If this happens, you should throw some spilled salt over your left shoulder.
