Huck and Tom were good friends, and they both cared about Jim very much. They heard that Jim was locked up in a small hut and decided to save him. At first, they planned to take the key from the old man after he fell asleep. But Tom did not like this easy way. He loved exciting adventures, so he refused the easy plan and wanted to try something difficult.

That night, some men came to visit Uncle Silas. Huck and Tom took a sharp saw and ran back to the hut as fast as they could. In many cultures, being a good guest is highly valued. However, what makes a good guest can be different from one country to another.
In China, guests are often treated like royalty. When you visit a Chinese home, you can expect to be offered tea, fruit, and snacks. The host will do everything to make you feel comfortable. In return, guests are expected to show appreciation and not be too demanding.
In Western countries, the guest-host relationship is often more relaxed. Guests are expected to be independent and follow the host’s routine. For example, if the host says “Make yourself at home”, it means you can feel free to get a drink or use the bathroom without asking.
One usual rule everywhere is to bring a small gift when you are invited. It shows that you value the host’s invitation. Also, it is polite to offer help with cleaning up after a meal, though the host may refuse.
When in doubt, it is always a good idea to ask. A simple question like “Is there anything I can do to help?” shows that you are considerate.
1.What can a guest expect when visiting a Chinese home?
2.In Western countries, what does “Make yourself at home” usually mean?
3.What is a usual rule for guests everywhere?
4.What should you do if you are not sure about the custom?
5.What do you think is the most important quality of a good guest? Why?

No matter where you go, no matter what you do, when you are in public places, following the rules of good manners is a must. How should we behave in public places? Here is some advice.
Keep your voice down
Don’t speak or laugh loudly. Remember that although you may be excited and want to voice your excitement, the people around you may not be interested in it at all. It’s polite to speak in a low voice. This includes laughing as well.
Dress properly
Dress in a way that is appropriate for the place that you are going to. If you are going to an event where people dress in a formal way, do the same. Do not wear blue jeans or a T-shirt to a dinner party.
Follow table manners
In Western countries, it’s not polite to pick up food with your hands. You should use a fork or a spoon. When you are in China, you shouldn’t start eating first if there are older people at the table. Using your phone while having a meal is also bad behavior.
Protect public property (财产)
Public facilities (设施) such as chairs, garbage cans, and public artworks are for everyone’s use and enjoyment. We should not damage them, for example, by carving on chairs or throwing garbage about. Taking good care of public property ensures that they can serve people for a long time.
1.Why should we keep our voice down in public places?
2.What shouldn’t we wear when going to a dinner party according to the passage?
3.What is impolite in Western countries according to the passage?
4.What should we do with public facilities?
5.In your opinion, what other rules should we follow in public places? Give an example.

A thunderstorm is a common but dangerous weather event. It often brings heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder. It’s important for us to know how to protect ourselves. Here are three useful suggestions for staying safe.
First, stay indoors as soon as possible. When you see dark clouds or hear thunder in the distance, do not wait. Move into a strong building right away. Do not go outside again until the storm has passed. Staying inside is the simplest and most effective (有效的) way to reduce risk.
Second, keep away from electricity and water indoors. Do not use wired (有线的) phones, televisions, computers, or other electrical appliances during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through wiring (线路) and injure you. Avoid touching water taps, taking showers, or washing dishes, as water pipes (管) can also carry electricity. Stay away from windows, doors, and metal objects. Even inside a safe building, careful behavior is necessary to keep out of danger.
Third, if you are outdoors and meet a thunderstorm, act quickly. Never stand under trees or in open fields—these are the most dangerous places during a storm. Do not stand in water or run in heavy rain. If you can’t find a safe building, keep away from bicycles and other metal objects. Crouch down on the balls of your feet quickly, keep your head low, and cover your ears with your hands. Make yourself as small as possible. This position reduces the chance of being struck by lightning and buys you time until the storm passes.
In short, safety during a thunderstorm depends on calm, quick action. By following these rules, we can greatly reduce the danger. Always remember: safety comes first.

Every year in the US, there are about 1,000 tornadoes in the area known as Tornado Alley (走廊), which mainly includes states like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. That’s why this area is called “Tornado Alley”.
The “tornado season” is usually in spring, but the people in Tornado Alley are always ready for them and they always listen to the news. When the warnings come, people follow their disaster plans. They find somewhere safe to stay. At home, the best place is the basement — a room that is used to store things under the level of the ground. If there is no basement, a room without windows like the bathroom is also a safe place.
“At school, we often have tornado drills so that we can get ready and won’t feel afraid when there’s a tornado,” says Tiffany Taylor, a high school student from Texas. “There’s no basement at my school, so we usually go to the hallways on the lowest floors. Of course, we never sit near the windows.”
After the tornado, people first check to see if it is safe to go out, and then they check the buildings and the area. And usually many buildings fall down and broken things are everywhere!
In China, we are not so often troubled by tornadoes, but we do have disasters like earthquakes, or an unexpected fire. It is important to know how to keep us safe when a disaster happens. Always remember to get well prepared.

Recently, I put a question “What free-time activities do you usually do?” on my blog. Here are the answers of three students.
A message from an American boy on February 24th, 2026
Hi, My name is Eric. I have many free-time activities. For example, I go camping with my family once a week. We take a lot of food and drinks with us. We sing, dance and play games together. If we feel tired, we can rest in beautiful tents.
A message from a Chinese girl on February 26th, 2026
Hello! I’m Amy, a student in Grade 7. We students are busy with the schoolwork. We only have two days free in a week. For me, after I finish my homework at home, I usually go swimming with my friends. It is a good way to relax. That’s also my favourite activity because it can help me keep healthy.

That’s why I always stay at home by myself. On my vacation, my favourite activity is reading at home. My favourite writer is Liu Cixin and I hope I can be a writer like him when I grow up.

Children know that summer is probably the most interesting of all seasons. However, experts say this season is the most dangerous, especially for children aged 14 and under. In a study of children’s safety in the US, researchers found that nearly half of the injury-related (与受伤相关的) deaths among children happened in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be injured. “While we encourage children to be active and spend more time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety,” said an expert.
To help children stay safe, the “Make It a Safe Kids’ Summer” Campaign was started during Safe Kids Week, from 7 May to 13 May.
Here are some important summer safety tips from the campaign.
•Always wear your seat belt.
•Wear a life jacket when on a boat or doing water sports.
•Obey all traffic rules.
•Don’t meet e-pals alone.
1.Which season is the most dangerous for children aged 14 and under?
2.Are experts surprised by the study’s results?
3.What do children need to understand if we encourage them to spend more time outdoors?
4.How many summer safety tips given by the campaign are mentioned in the passage?
5.What’s the purpose of writing this passage?
We usually go to see a doctor when we are ill. Doctors may give us some medicine, and the medicine often makes us feel better.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man, Thomas Smith. He was ill in hospital, but he wasn’t getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain after half a year. He could have a good night’s rest. His own happy feeling helped him get well again. He wrote his story in his book. He said laughing was very useful. It was the best “medicine”.
Another man, Simon Beck, was also ill, and he had a serious pain in his back. The doctor couldn’t stop it, so the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it to be a real dog. And it was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head and made friends with it. One year later, his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you, but more and more people are getting well in this way. So call on the “doctor” inside your mind, and keep happy and well!
1.What may doctors give us when we are ill?
2.According to Thomas Smith, what was the best “medicine”?
3.What did Simon Beck begin to do when the doctor couldn’t stop his pain?
4.Do you agree with the idea in the passage? Why or why not? (Write at least 20 words)

【答案】1.Because the people around us may not be interested in our loud speaking or laughing. 2.We shouldn’t wear blue jeans or a T-shirt. 3.Picking up food with our hands. 4.We should take good care of public facilities ( and not damage them). 5.We should wait in line. For example, wait in line when we take the bus.
1.根据“Keep your voice down”部分:“the people around you may not be interested in it at all. It’s polite to speak in a low voice.”说明在公共场所压低声音,是因为周围的人可能并不想听你的大声交谈/欢笑,保持低声是一种礼貌,避免打扰他人。故填Because the people around us may not be interested in our loud speaking or laughing.
2.根据“Dress properly”部分:“Do not wear blue jeans or a T-shirt to a dinner party.”直接明确说明参加晚宴时不应该穿牛仔裤或T恤。故填We shouldn’t wear blue jeans or a T-shirt.
3.根据“Follow table manners”部分:“In Western countries, it’s not polite to pick up food with your hands.”同时结合后文“Using your phone while having a meal is also bad behavior”,也属于餐桌礼仪的不礼貌行为,但核心针对西方国家的是“用手抓食物”。故填Picking up food with our hands.
4.根据“Protect public property”部分:“We should not damage them, for example, by carving on chairs or throwing garbage about. Taking good care of public property ensures that they can serve people for a long time.”说明我们应该爱护公共设施,不破坏、不涂鸦、不乱扔垃圾,好好维护它们,让它们能长期为大家服务。故填We should take good care of public facilities ( and not damage them).
5.这是开放性问题,需要结合公共礼仪补充合理的规则并举例。故填We should wait in line. For example, wait in line when we take the bus. (答案不唯一,观点合理、符合公共场所礼仪即可)

阅读下文并回答问题。
