In March 2026, a letter from a middle school student in Shenzhen became popular online. The student,14-year-old Chen Xiaoxiao, wrote to her headmaster to 35 a noisy bird called the koel (噪鹃).
“Every morning at 5 a. m., the koel starts shouting ‘ko-el, ko-el’ outside my window. It is so loud that I can’t go back 36 sleep. I’m tired in class,” Chen wrote. She asked the school to find a way to stop the bird.
Many students expected the headmaster to take action to drive the bird away. 37 , the headmaster, Mr. Lin, gave a very different reply. His letter was warm and full of wisdom. He said, “Dear students, I 38 your trouble. But the koel has lived here longer than our school. It does not know it is ‘noisy’ — it just sings to welcome the 39 which is the start of a year. Nature doesn’t mean to hurt us. Let’s learn to live with it.”
Mr. Lin also gave a 40 suggestion: wearing soft earplugs (耳塞) at night or moving to the other side of the dormitory (宿舍). He added, “If you still find it hard, come to my office. I’ve just bought a white noise machine. We can share it.”
Chen Xiaoxiao was moved. “I thought he would just say ‘no’, but he really 41 about our feelings,” she said. Her 42 letter to the headmaster said, “Thank you for teaching us tolerance (宽容).”
The story was shared online and 43 caught fire. People online praised Mr. Lin for his kind and clever reply. One comment read, “This is not just about a bird. It’s about 44 education teaches us to meet the world with understanding.”

Once, food from Yunnan was not well-known in Chinese cooking. But now, it has developed well by showing what other provinces don’t have.
In 1903, a British official named George Litton said Yunnan was very beautiful. Under the winter sun, its forests and high mountains seemed to attract lots of people. Long ago, people thought Yunnan was a backward place with only simple food. But as more people traveled there, its special taste of food spread.
Yunnan has many ethnic (民族的) groups and is a place where different cultures meet. These two things make its food special. Chef Zhang Yingfei says food from Yunnan is “green”. It often uses fresh, natural things for cooking. Yunnan has different kinds of land, like places with tall, thick plants and areas with high altitude (海拔), where the air gets thinner and trees become shorter. Because of these, some even say there’s no single “Yunnanese food” to describe it. “Our food has all tastes, including weird ones that non-Yunnanese have never tried before and things you can only eat in certain seasons.”, Zhang adds.
Mushrooms (菌类) are the most famous part of Yunnanese food. It has about 250 kinds of wild mushrooms —that’ s two-thirds of all eatable wild mushrooms in China. Though some people get sick from eating the wrong wild mushrooms, their freshness still draws many people. Mushroom tourism is growing too: Nanhua County, called the “Kingdom of Wild Mushrooms”, has been attracting lots of visitors since 5 years ago. ▲ .
People living in other cities love Yunnan’s healthy food. Some take trips there to make local cheese or pick tea. On the other hand, Yunnanese food goes to other cities. National chain restaurants do well. Like Yun Hai Yao, its waiters wear beautiful necklaces and dresses from ethnic groups to attract customers. Shanghai even has restaurants with Lijiang style. Chef Zhang says, “Many chefs are thinking about taking Yunnan food to other countries. It’ll become more creative!”
48. According to Chef Zhang Yingfei, why is Yunnan food considered “green”?
A. Because it is mostly cooked with vegetables.
B. Because the vegetables are fresh and natural.
C. Because the food is usually green in color.
D. Because it is popular in the countryside.

Mowgli knew he got many enemies like the tiger Shere Khan, so he ran far until he came to a village. Some little boys were looking after some cows. When they saw Mowgli, they shouted and ran away.
He sat by the gate. When a man came out of the village, Mowgli opened his mouth to show that he wanted food. The man ran away and later came back with a hundred other people. They all saw the bite marks on Mowgli’s arms and legs.
“Look,” said a man, "those are the bite marks of wolves. He is a wolf child who has run away from the jungle (丛林).”
“He is a good-looking boy,” one woman said. “Messua, he looks like your boy that was taken by the tiger.”
“Let me see,” said Messua. “Yes, he’s thin, but he looks like my son.”
“Take him home, Messua,” the villagers said. “The jungle took your boy and gave this one back.”
Messua took Mowgli to her house and gave him milk and bread. This was Mowgli’s first time in a house. He didn’t like it. It felt like a prison where he couldn’t do what he wanted freely.
“But I am a man now,” he thought. “I must do what men do and learn to speak like men.” He knew many of the languages of the jungle, so it was easy for him to learn human languages. That first evening he learnt many words from Messua.
But that night he did not want to sleep inside the house. So he climbed out of the window, and slept in a field nearby. Before he went to sleep, a soft grey nose touched his face. It was Grey Brother, Mother Wolf’s eldest kid.
“Wake, Little Brother,” he said. “I bring news. Shere Khan has gone away. You burnt his coat with the Red Flower. He says he’ll kill you when he comes back.”
“I remember what I said about Shere Khan,” said Mowgli. “But it is good to have news. Will you always bring me news, Grey Brother?”

At the National Agricultural High-Tech Zone, some truly “out-of-this-world” work is going on. Some upland rice seeds (旱稻种子) that experienced “space breeding (育种)” have grown up there.
The upland rice seeds were taken to the Tiangong space station by the Shenzhou XVI members in May 2023. There, they experienced space radiation (辐射) and microgravity (微重力), which caused genetic mutations (基因突变).
After spending more than 150 days in space, the seeds returned to Earth on October 31. Scientists studied the genetic mutations and found that some seeds have the qualities that farmers prefer, such as higher production and faster growth without diseases.
“For space breeding, the space environment holds great value, which cannot be copied on Earth,” Professor Dong Qi from Shanxi Agricultural University said. “Traditional breeding usually takes eight to ten years, but space breeding could cut down the time by half,” he added. He explained that these space seeds may look the same as common ones but go through important changes inside.
Space breeding, however, is not a simple task. Not all seeds mutate in space, so careful selection is the key. With the limited space on the spacecraft, only the best-chosen seeds are sent. After space travel, the seeds still need to be tested for things like production, quality and market value. In the end, only a few of the seeds pass the test to become true “space seeds”
The high-tech area has long been working with China’s space program. It is located in Shanxi, which has a dry climate. This provides the perfect environment for growing and spreading new kinds of upland rice.
The journey of Chinese seeds into space began in 1987. Since then, over 3,000 space breeding experiments have taken place, resulting in more than 400 new types of vegetables, fruits, trees, grasses and flowers.
56. How long did the upland rice seeds spend in space?
A. For about 1 year. B. For about 1 month. C. For about 3 months. D. For about 5 months.
57. What cause(s) changes in the seeds in space?
A. High temperature and strong wind. B. Space radiation and microgravity.
C. Careful selection by scientists. D. Traditional breeding methods.
58. How are true “space seeds” made according to the passage?
A. ②③①④ B. ①②④③ C. ②①④③ D. ①③②④
59. Why does the author mention the numbers in the last paragraph?
A. To encourage more farmers to grow the new types of seeds.
B. To compare space seeds with traditional seeds in the market.
C. To explain why space breeding is a difficult task for most scientists.
D. To introduce the history and great achievements of China’s space breeding.

Nowadays, energy plays an important role in people’s daily life. However, with the fast development of society, the whole world is facing a serious energy crisis (危机). Here is what three people from different countries say about their real-life situations and small green changes.
Maria, a housewife from Italy
“The price of oil has doubled. Our electricity bills (账单) are so high that we cannot turn on the heater in winter. Even food prices have gone up because of higher transport costs. To save energy, I now hang clothes outside instead of using a dryer, and I cook with a pressure cooker to use less gas.”
Amina, a shop owner from Kenya
“Everything in my shop costs more now. A bag of rice was $10, but now it’s$18. The price of cooking oil and bread has also jumped. Customers buy less, so Imake less money. My children’s school sometimes closes because there is no fuel (燃料) for the school bus. To help save energy, my husband and I walk to the market instead of driving, and we reuse plastic bottles for storing water.”
Kenji, a taxi driver from Japan
“Gas is now three times more expensive than before. Many of my taxi driver friends have lost their jobs because no one can afford a ride. The government also asks factories to stop working two days a week to save electricity, so my wife lost her part-time job. Water pumps (泵) need electricity, so we sometimes have no running water. At home, I always turn off the TV and lights when not using them, and I take quick showers.”
As we can see, the energy crisis brings many problems to people all over the world. Energy saving is never a big task for only governments or experts. Every common person can make a difference. Small energy-saving actions from each of us will surely help protect our earth and create a better future for the whole world.

You make decisions every single day. They can be little things, like what you’ re going to eat for lunch and who you play with during breaktime. Sometimes, though, they are more serious, like which major (专业) to choose for . your college or whether you want to be friends with a person anymore. It can be hard to make decisions.
Sometimes there are too many choices for you, and trying to work through lots of different outcomes (结果) can be stressful. Part of being able to make good decisions is also about having confidence in yourself and knowing what you want. So, having low self-confidence can play a part in finding it hard to make choices.
Your friends and family are a big part of your life and it can be hard not to be influenced by their opinions when you’ re faced with a choice. “You can often make decisions based on what others expect from you or to ‘fit in’ with others,” says Dr Macaulay, an expert in psychology (how we think, feel and behave) at the University of Derby in England. How do you stop being influenced too much by people’s opinions, and other things like the internet and social media? “One way is to think about your personal identity (the different things that make you who you are) and values (what you believe in), and to develop self-esteem (自尊). By doing this, we are less likely to be influenced by other people,” says Dr Macaulay. He also suggests that when making decisions, it is of great importance to think about how the outcome will affect you and people around you.
Everybody makes wrong decisions sometimes. That’s ok. Learning to deal with the outcomes of your choices is part of growing up-and anyway, very few decisions we make are permanent (永久的). If you’ re worried you’ve made the wrong choice, or you’ re finding it hard to make a decision, speak to an adult you trust.
We make decisions every day, from small daily ones like picking lunch to important life choices such as 74 . It is often difficult to make decisions when 75 . And we often get easily influenced by family, friends and social media. Psychologist Dr. Macaulay advises us to focus on our personal values and build self-esteem. He also suggests that 76 .
