Cora had been working on a special drawing for a week. It was a picture of her good friends having a great time in a wonderful park. She had used her favorite glitter (闪光) pens and had gotten the colors just right. She hoped she could give it to her friends soon as a surprise.
As she was packing her bag after school, her water bottle tipped over. The water made the bottom of her backpack wet. Cora’s heart sank (低落). She quickly pulled out the drawing. Most of the picture was badly ruined (毁坏) by the water. Its colors ran and the paper turned wet and soft. Cora almost cried.
The next day, she wanted to tell her friends what had happened. During the break, she went to Peter and Zach, but they were busy talking about a video game. Later, she saw Mia and Emily, but they were excited about Emily’s new watch. She felt sad that nobody seemed to care about her. She went to sit on a bench (长椅) alone.
A few moments later, Eric sat down next to her and asked, “You don’t look very happy today. What’s up?”
Finally, someone was asking and someone was ready to listen. The lump (哽咽) in Cora’s throat disappeared as she told him everything—about the week of work, the tipped-over water bottle, and the ruined painting.
Eric didn’t interrupt. He didn’t try to solve the problem. He just listened. When she was done, he nodded seriously. “That’s such a pity,” he said. “It’s okay to be sad when something you worked so hard on is ruined.”
What he said made Cora feel a million times better. Her sadness didn’t disappear, but it felt lighter, as if she had shared the weight of it.
“Thanks, Eric,” she said, managing a small smile. “Thanks for listening.”
Sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do for someone isn’t to give advice, but simply to offer a listening ear.
28.How did Cora feel when she found her friends were all busy during the break?
A.Surprised. B.Sad. C.Angry. D.Relaxed.
29.What did Eric do when Cora told him about her ruined drawing?

B.He listened to her without interrupting.
C.He gave her advice on how to draw better.
D.He played video games with her to cheer her up.
30.What does the story want to tell us?

①The Tang Dynasty, which ruled ancient China from 618 to 907AD, is often regarded as a high point in Chinese civilization, and a golden age of worldwide culture. Its influence and achievements are still felt and studied today.
②Much progress in the fields of engineering and technology was made during the Tang Dynasty. Perhaps the most important was the invention of woodblock printing. Woodblock printing allowed books to be printed in mass production. This helped to increase literacy and to pass on knowledge throughout the empire. The first full-length book to be printed was The Diamond Sutra in 868.
③Another major invention of the time was gunpowder. Although it would continue to be perfected over hundreds of years, gunpowder was mostly used for fireworks during the Tang Dynasty. The people believed that fireworks could help to scare off evil spirits.
④The arts flourished (繁荣) during the Tang Dynasty. It was during this time that poetry became an important part of the Chinese culture. Poetry was a required study for those who wished to pass the civil service exams. Talented poets were well-respected and often recited their poetry as entertainment at parties. Some of the great poets in Chinese history lived during this time such as Li Bai, Du Fu, and Wang Wei.
⑤While the Tang Dynasty is most famous for its poetry, other arts also became popular during this time. Many forms of literature were written including short stories, encyclopedias, and histories. Also, painting was very popular and the era produced famous painters such as Wu Daozi, Wang Wei (also a famous poet), and Zhou Fang.
⑥Did you know? It was during the Tang Dynasty that drinking tea became a leisure activity. The capital city of Chang'an was the largest city in the world at the time. It is estimated that the total population of the city and the countryside around it totaled nearly 2 million.
31.What does the underlined word “literacy” mean in the passage?
A.the activity of traveling for pleasure B.farming or working the land
C.the means of travel D.the ability to read and write
32.Why did the government officials need to learn poetry during the Tang Dynasty?
A.Because it was part of the government job examinations.
B.Because they used poetry to communicate at parties.
C.Because leaders were often respected by famous poets.

Iceland is the most eco-friendly country in the world. Sitting on a geologic (地质的) hot spot with lots of volcanic (火山的) activities, Iceland has plenty of geothermal (地热的) energy. In fact, it is Icelanders who have truly won this title. They made decisions to use clean energy and learned how to make good use of their natural resources.
An Icelandic baker named Rafn Hilmarsson bakes hverabrauð (hot-springs bread), just as his mother and his grandmother did before. Every day, Rafn takes the bread dough (面团) to his oven—a hole dug near the town’s lake. The hole is about one foot deep, where temperatures are near the boiling point. Rafn covers the hole with sand. After 24 hours, he returns to dig out his fully baked bread, hot from its earthly oven.
Most homes are heated using geothermal water from underground. But that wasn’t always the case. Until the 1970s, most people in Iceland heated their homes using oil, which was expensive. So the government put in pipes that brought hot water from beneath Earth’s surface to Icelanders’ homes. Those same pipes carrying hot water to heat homes were also used to help melt (融化) snow and ice from city sidewalks.
In this way, Iceland ended the dependence on oil for heating. In Reykjavik, Icelanders’ heating costs would be five times as high if they still depended on oil. Iceland uses geothermal energy and water energy to produce 99 percent of the country’s electricity. Icelanders are using clean energy to power everything from fishing boats to cars and buses driving around Reykjavik.
Iceland now shares its practice about geothermal heating with the rest of the world. The president of the country travels to other countries, explaining the advantages of geothermal power. Engineers and geologists from Iceland have helped scientists in Germany, the Philippines, China, and the United States learn more about using Earth’s heat for their own projects. The plenty of cheap, efficient (高效的) energy makes Iceland a possible choice for big companies like Microsoft and Google to run the mega-computers that power the World Wide Web.
34.Why is Iceland the most eco-friendly country in the world?
A.Because it has a lot of volcanic activities. B.Because Iceland has plenty of geothermal energy.
C.Because its people are good at making hot-springs bread. D.Because it uses clean energy like geothermal energy widely.
35.What can we learn about Rafn’s way of baking bread?
A.It depends on natural heat and takes a full day. B.It is a modern creative way invented by himself.
C.He uses special hot spring water to boil the dough. D.He digs a deep hole and keeps fire burning inside.
36.What change did Iceland make in the 1970s?
A.It started to use oil to heat most homes. B.It increased people’s heating costs five times.
C.It built pipes to bring hot geothermal water for heating. D.It stopped using geothermal energy to melt snow on sidewalks.
37.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Iceland only keeps its geothermal technology to itself. B.Iceland’s geothermal power is expensive but highly efficient.
C.Microsoft and Google have set up the mega-computers in Iceland. D.Iceland offers help to other countries in using geothermal energy.

One of the oldest arts which dates back to the Han Dynasty has been disappearing from the stage. Different from films, the shadow play (皮影戏) needs more attention. In the past years, Chinese artists have been trying to help it survive. Their effort has got encouragement and support from the government. In 2011, the shadow puppet (木偶) play was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (遗产) list.
Most of the puppets were made of leathers from animals, like donkeys and sheep. The leathers must be carefully chosen, and then people make them smooth. When the leathers become smooth enough, the artists would paint the characters on it, and then cut them out with different tools. The body parts of the puppets are separately cut out and joined together, so that they could have 24 movable joints (关节). Puppet players hold them with sticks connected to their most important joints during the performance.
The experienced players could act five sticks on one puppet with only one hand. Most of them show interest in puppet performances, so they can play several traditional instruments. They are also needed to sing local operas, and have a good sense of music.
Xue Hongquan has found ways to protect it from disappearing. He improved the traditional performance and added modern music, light as well as performing skills. Xue’s puppets could not only perform old plays, but could imitate (模仿) modern dances. “The art could be passed onto only by making more people love it and accept it,” said Xue. “So it is our duty to do something for our traditional art.”

A.He helped her fix the drawing at once.
B.He listened to her without interrupting.
C.He gave her advice on how to draw better.
D.He played video games with her to cheer her up.
30.What does the story want to tell us?
A.Small accidents can’t be avoided.
B.Friends should spend time together.
C.Listening can be a way of comfort.
D.Helping others can bring us happiness.

D.Because most of the short stories were written in poetry.
33.Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1…)
A.①/②/③④/⑤⑥B.①/②/③④/⑤/⑥ C.①/②③/④⑤/⑥ D.①/②/③/④⑤/⑥
【答案】31.D 32.A 33.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了唐朝在科技、文艺等领域的成就与影响,展现了其文明高峰的地位。
【详解】31.第二段上下文“Woodblock printing allowed books to be printed in mass production. This helped to increase literacy and to pass on knowledge…”表明,雕版印刷使书籍大规模生产,有助于传播知识。书籍和知识的传播与“读写能力”直接相关,因此literacy意为“读写能力”。
32.第四段中“Poetry was a required study for those who wished to pass the civil service exams.”

【答案】34.D 35.A 36.C 37.D

阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题(每题回答字数不超过10字词)
