Born in 1994 in Inner Mongolia, Li Xiaofang discovered her lifelong interest during a college class. While studying art design in college, she took a course on traditional ethnic Mongolian leather carving, which changed her life.
Leather carving is a difficult process that requires lots of steps, from selecting leather and choosing patterns to carving, hammering (锤打), and coloring. To keep the traditional art alive, Li mixes old tradition and new ideas. For example, she creates modern things like handbags with traditional designs. “Young people really prefer simple designs that have traditional meanings behind them,” she says.
Online, Li’s workroom is highly recommended as a must-visit spot for tourists in Hohhot. It drew a lot of tourists to explore traditional handmade leather products. “For anyone visiting Hohhot, I really think you should go to this place!
