On the whole island, there were only three small huts, and one of these was empty when I arrived. There were holes in the roof, and the windows were broken, but I had them mended and moved in. No one came to visit me, and I was able to spend my days working, even though I hated what I was doing, and there were days when I could not continue. However, I made good progress, and I knew that soon I would have created a female.
The monster (怪物) had promised that if I made a female for him, he would go and live with her in the jungle and never kill again. But I did not know what the female would be like. It was possible that she would be worse than the monster I had already created. There was also the possibility (可能性) that she would hate him. Then what would happen? I asked myself.
Suddenly, as I sat thinking, I heard a noise outside. I looked out of the window and saw the monster. He had followed me. Looking at him, I knew now I could not. I knew that whatever happened I must not create another monster. I started destroying (毁坏) my work.
Through the window, the monster saw me do this. He pushed open the door. “What are you doing, Victor?” He shouted at me. “Why have you broken your promise? Why are you now destroying all my hopes? You have created me, but I am your master. You will obey me and keep your promise.”
“No,” I answered. “I will not create another monster. Nothing you can say or do will make me change this decision. Now, go.”
He was silent for a moment. Then he said, “I will go now, but I shall be with you on your wedding night.” With these words he left the hut.
I stood at the door of my hut, knowing it was useless to follow him. I had made my decision, and he had made his. “Would that be the end of his anger,” I asked myself, “or would he kill Elizabeth also if I married her?” I passed a sleepless night.

Guangzhou Embroidery, or Guangxiu, is one of China’s four famous embroidery styles. With a history of over 1,000 years, this traditional craft is known for its bright colors, lively patterns, and 3-D appearance. However, like many traditional arts, it was once in danger of disappearing.
In the past, learning Guangxiu required many years of practice. Young people found it too difficult and time-consuming, so fewer and fewer wanted to learn it. By the early 2000s, only a few elderly masters still knew the skills. The craft was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非遗) in 2006, which helped draw attention to its value.
Today, a new generation is bringing Guangxiu back to life. Art schools in Guangzhou now offer courses in traditional embroidery. Students learn not only the basic stitches (针法) but also how to design modern patterns. One such artist is Chen Yushan, a 24-year-old designer who combines Guangxiu with fashion design. Her embroidered jackets and bags have become popular among young people.
Technology is also playing a role in protecting this traditional art. Digital tools allow artists to record and share traditional patterns online. On TikTok, some Guangxiu artists teach users basic embroidery skills through short videos step by step. “We want to make Guangxiu easy to understand for everyone,” says one of the artists.
The revival (复兴) of Guangxiu shows that traditional crafts can still be meaningful in modern life. By adding new ideas while protecting traditional skills, young artists are making sure that this thousand-year-old art form will continue for a long time.

A.Artists can make money through embroidery.
B.Traditional skills can be made popular in new ways.
C.Young people are more interested in fashion design.
D.Embroidery is becoming more popular than other arts.
11.How do some Guangxiu artists make this traditional art simple?
A.By showing their embroidery works to the public.
B.By designing modern embroidery courses for art schools.
C.By sharing embroidery methods through short videos online.
D.By recording traditional embroidery patterns with digital tools.

In a small workshop at the foot of the Jinghang Mountain, the sound of hammering on silver echoes (回响) daily. This is the world of Miao silver crafting, an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) with a history of over 400 years. Today, a group of young artists, some still in their twenties, are injecting new life into this ancient craft.
“I grew up watching my father work the silver,” says Wang Li, 26, who left a city job to return to her village. “To many, it’s just a piece of jewelry. To me, it’s a language of our ancestors.” Wang Li and her peers aren’t simply copying old designs. They are experimenting. They are combining traditional Miao patterns of butterflies and dragons with modern, minimalist (极简主义的) shapes.
“The craft itself is very strict. One wrong hit can ruin a whole day’s work,” explains Chen Wei, a 28-year-old artist who studied metal design in college. “But the design can be free. That’s the exciting part—using strict skills to create something modern and personal.”
Their efforts are paying off. At a recent cultural fair in Shanghai, their pieces, which included delicate silver earrings shaped like falling leaves and bracelets that looked like flowing streams, were sold out quickly. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said one customer, Ms. Zhao. “You can feel the history, but they fit perfectly with my jeans and T-shirt.”
The young artists also use short videos to share their process. “We want to show people that it’s not just about the final product. The beauty is also in the patience, the skill, and the love hammered into every piece,” says Wang Li. For them, heritage is not a thing of the past. It’s a living, breathing art that grows with each generation.

Understand your parents’ love. Parents’ nagging (唠叨) and care are all full of love. They may worry about your study and safety. 20 Understanding their hard work is important because they can do almost everything for you. A small “Thank you” or helping with housework can make them feel warm.

9.What can we learn about Guangxiu from the passage?
A.Many people liked it around the year 2000.
B.It has been a cultural heritage for 1000 years.
C.It is the most famous embroidery style in China.
D.Young people showed little interest in learning it.
10.What does the example of Chen Yushan mainly show?
A.Artists can make money through embroidery.
B.Traditional skills can be made popular in new ways.
C.Young people are more interested in fashion design.
D.Embroidery is becoming more popular than other arts.
11.How do some Guangxiu artists make this traditional art simple?
A.By showing their embroidery works to the public.
B.By designing modern embroidery courses for art schools.
C.By sharing embroidery methods through short videos online.
D.By recording traditional embroidery patterns with digital tools.
12.What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of Guangxiu?
A.Doubtful. B.Hopeful. C.Worried. D.Satisfied.

13.What does the underlined phrase “injecting new life into” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Giving money to. B.Making pictures of.
C.Bringing freshness to. D.Taking photos of.
14.Why does the author mention the customer Ms. Zhao?
A.To show the high price of the silver pieces.
B.To prove the young artists’ work is well-received.
C.To describe the traditional Miao patterns.
D.To explain how to make silver earrings.
15.What is the key to the success of these young Miao silver artists?
A.Using the most expensive materials.

D.Combining strict skills with modern designs.
16.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
