Emily Kalil lives in northern Canada. She watches the northern lights almost every night, but she never gets bored. The northern lights are beautiful waves of green, purple and pink light in the night sky. The best places to see them are in the far north, like the Yukon where Kalil lives.
Kalil helps run a tour company. She and her husband take visitors to see the lights. The Yukon is great for this because few people live there—only about 40,000. “There are more moose (驼鹿) than humans,” she said. Her company has a special viewing place far from city lights. It provides a better condition for people to watch the lights.
A usual tour starts around 10 p.m. and ends after 2 a.m. But the lights do not always show up. “I can control everything except the northern lights,” Kalil said. The lights come about once every three nights. So she tells visitors to book three nights.
Kalil remembers one special family. They tried to see the lights for three nights but failed. On the last night, it was snowing hard. They almost stayed home. But then the snow stopped and the lights came out. The little girl shouted, “They look like fireworks!” Kalil said, “That was a really special moment.”
For first-time visitors, Kalil has simple advice. “Go out every night. Every night is different. There’s always a chance.” For Kalil, the best part of her job is watching people see the northern lights for the first time. “That’s easily the best part of my job,” she said.
19.What makes Emily Kalil’s company a good place to see the northern lights?
A.It has very few city lights. B.It has warm houses for visitors.
C.There are many tour companies there. D.The lights appear there every night.
20.What does Emily Kalil mean by saying “I can control everything except the northern lights”?
A.She feels sad that she cannot control the lights. B.She can decide when the lights will appear.
C.She can plan the tour well, but not the lights. D.She has difficulty running the tour company.
21.Why does Emily Kalil tell visitors to book three nights?
A.Because each night’s lights look different.
B.Because the lights only come every three nights or so.
C.Because the tours are short and visitors want more.
D.Because the weather is often bad in the Yukon.
22.What can we infer about Emily Kalil’s idea toward her job?
A.She is satisfied but sometimes feels bored and tired.
B.She enjoys it just because of the beautiful and attractive lights.
C.She finds it difficult and wants to change it completely in her mind.
D.Her happiness comes from the excitement of the visitors’ first experiences there.
【答案】19.A 20.C 21.B 22.D
【导语】本文讲述了加拿大北部极光向导Emily Kalil的工作日常,介绍了她所在育空地区观测极光的优势、极光出现的不确定性,以及她对这份工作的热爱。
【详解】19.第二段指出:“Her company has a special viewing place far from city lights. It provides a better condition for people to watch the lights.”,这直接说明Emily Kalil的公司远离城市灯光,是观测极光的好地方。
20.第三段指出:“I can control everything except the northern lights”,这说明她能安排好旅行的一切,却无法控制极光是否出现。
21.第三段指出:“The lights come about once every three nights. So she tells visitors to book three nights.”,这直接解释了建议游客预订三晚的原因。
22.第五段指出:“For Kalil, the best part of her job is watching people see the northern lights for the first time”,这体现她的快乐来自游客首次看到极光的激动体验。
C
Artist Rogan Brown is known for turning paper into amazing 3D paper sculptures (3D纸雕塑). Did you know his art is more than beauty? His artwork shows how art and nature protection can work together to show people what harms coral reefs. People pollute the sea and harm sea creatures’(生物的) homes by pouring dirty water and throwing plastics into the sea. Because of this, it’s not unusual to find examples of coral bleaching (白化) among the reefs. Almost all the world’s coral reefs are now in danger.
As a result, many of Brown’s sculptures use white paper and have almost no bright colors, like the ones we usually see in healthy coral reefs. This provides much of his work with a serious feeling as the viewer sees copies of pale, broken coral. Sometimes he adds a little color, but only to stress the big difference between dead-looking white coral and colorful living coral. His artworks are like a wake-up call for coral reef protection. Its goal is to make people realize the importance of saving coral reefs.
Brown’s artwork shows amazing creativity. He spends a long time carefully cutting each shape from paper. He works hard to glue every piece onto the big sculpture. His paper corals look so real, you might think they are photos of real coral underwater. ________ Several years ago, a clothing designer named Iris van Herpen asked him to help. Together, they made special dresses that looked like coral reefs!
Can art move people to act? The answer is yes! This art reminds us: we need to protect coral reefs before they disappear. Through his beautiful and meaningful pieces, Brown encourages everyone to think about environmental protection and take real action.
23.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The danger of coral reefs worldwide. B.The harm of human activities.
C.The fun of taking coral reef photos. D.The idea of connecting art with protection.
24.Why does Brown add a little color to some of his art pieces?
A.Because it makes them more lively.
B.Because it shows the difficulty of his work.
C.Because he wants his work to be more popular.
D.Because he aims to show how coral reefs are dying.
25.Which of the following can be put in ________?
A.So, Brown sells his sculptures online.
B.Also, Brown likes to use simple tools to create.
C.However, Brown doesn’t just make paper sculptures.
D.Instead, Brown focuses on simple shapes and lines.
26.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a famous clothing designer.
B.To compare different coral protection methods.
C.To explain the process of making paper sculptures.
D.To call for saving coral reefs in danger through art.
根据第一段画线词“this”前一句“People pollute the sea and harm sea creatures’ (生物的) homes”可知,“this”指代的是前文提到的人类污染和破坏行为,即人类活动造成的危害。
24.根据第二段中“Sometimes he adds a little color, but only to stress the big difference between dead-looking white coral and colorful living coral.”可知,布朗在他的一些艺术作品中添加一点颜色目的是通过对比展示珊瑚礁正在死亡/白化的现状。
25.空前主要描述了布朗的纸雕塑作品逼真,空后提到他与服装设计师合作制作裙子。C选项“However, Brown doesn’t just make paper sculptures.”能起到承上启下的转折作用,引出下文他在雕塑之外的其他创作合作。
26.通读全文可知,文章介绍了艺术家罗根·布朗如何通过纸雕塑艺术展示珊瑚礁面临的危险,并在结尾强调“we need to protect coral reefs ... take real action”。因此文章的主要目的是呼吁通过艺术来拯救濒危的珊瑚礁。
D
If you spend hours watching short videos, you might find it hard to focus on a book or a long movie. Recent studies suggest that short videos are changing the way our brains work—and scientists are now discovering the chemical reasons behind it.
In February 2026, a new study published in the journal Neurolmage (神经影像学杂志) revealed important findings about what happens inside our brains when we watch short videos. Researchers used brain scanning technology to watch the brains of 56 young adults as they scrolled through short videos. They found that when people watched videos they really liked, two key brain areas became less active. These areas—the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (背侧前扣带皮层) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (背外侧前额叶皮层)—help us control our attention and make plans.
The study also discovered something new: a brain chemical called glutamate (谷氨酸) plays an important role. People with higher levels of glutamate showed less suppression in these brain areas, meaning they might be better at keeping self-control while watching videos.
Another 2025 study from China found even more worrying results. Researchers examined brain scans of 111 people and discovered that those who watched too many short videos had structural changes in their brains. The “reward center” of their brains grew larger, making them more sensitive to the pleasure of videos. At the same time, the area responsible for self-control became less active. The study also linked this to over 500 genes related to brain development.
So what does this mean for you? When you watch short videos, your brain gets used to quick changes and instant rewards. This makes it harder to focus on longer tasks like reading or studying. Your brain might even struggle to remember things because it’s trained to jump from one thing to another.
But there is good news. The brain can change back. Research shows that after taking a break from short videos, their brain activity improved. The bad effects can be reversed.
So, short videos are not all bad, but too many can make our brains lazy. We should find a balance between short videos and longer activities like reading books.
27.What do the two key brain areas help people do?
A.Enjoy more pleasure. B.Control attention and make plans.
C.Produce more glutamate. D.Change brain genes.
28.What advantage do people with higher glutamate levels have?
A.They never get tired of videos.
B.They have better self-control when watching videos.
C.Their reward center becomes larger.
D.They can remember things much better.
29.Which is one result of watching too many short videos?
A.It is easier to focus on reading.
B.The self-control brain area is more active.
C.The brain’s reward center grows larger.
D.Brain genes stop developing.
30.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Short videos change our brains and the bad effects can be reversed.
B.How to improve our brain power in daily life.
C.The introduction of two famous brain studies.
D.Glutamate is the most important chemical in our brain.
【答案】27.B 28.B 29.C 30.A
【导语】本文介绍了多项科学研究,说明过度观看短视频会改变大脑结构与运作模式,削弱专注力和自控力,同时指出这类损伤可逆,建议大家合理把控刷视频的时长,做到劳逸结合。
【详解】27.文章第二段最后一句:“These areas...help us control our attention and make plans.”提到这两个关键脑区的作用是帮助人们控制注意力和制定计划。
28.文章第三段最后一句:“People with higher levels of glutamate...meaning they might be better at keeping self-control while watching videos.”提到谷氨酸水平高的人在观看视频时有更好的自控力。
29.文章第四段第三句:“The ‘reward center’ of their brains grew larger...”

◆ What Is British Science Week?
British Science Week is an exciting event that lasts for ten days. Each year, over a million people take part in different activities. This year, the theme for British Science Week is “Innovating for the Future”. 31 This could be by introducing new ways of doing something or by coming up with a new idea.
32
Carrying out experiments is one of the interesting activities in British Science Week. Let’s look at how to make your own paint. When you’ve finished, don’t forget to name your new colour!
First, find some colourful materials, such as soil, plants or clay. 33 And only take things from outside which have already fallen to the ground.
Choose one material and put it into a bowl. Try to crush (捣碎) the material. Stop when you have made a powder (粉末). Then, put the powder into another empty bowl. Add water to the bowl so that the mixture is completely covered. 34
When all of the water has dried up in the sun, you will be left with paint powder. Add a tiny drop of water to the powder and try using it as paint on a piece of paper.
Try the experiment again with a different material to see what other colours you can make.
A.Blend the mixture and leave it in a sunny window.
B.Innovating means making changes to something.
C. Make sure that you are allowed to use any materials before taking them.
D.What can you do in British Science Week?
E. Where can you take part in British Science Week?
