COMMENTS ON THE APRIL ISSUE
Comments on the article ISurvived/
I anxiously held my breath as I read these accounts. It's nothing short of miraculous
(奇迹般的)that these people lived to tell their stories..I'm so relieved they did and so
grateful to have their experience and advice in hand should I ever have to face such
horrific emergencies.
JESSICAROSS,Parker,Colorado
After going through the account of the grizzly bear attack,I just had to make a
comment. When you have to call out "Hey,bear"'every 30 seconds because there are so
many bears in the area,it could be a sign that maybe you should pick a safer place to hike.
GLENDA CHIARA,Cortland,New York
Comments on the article Horrible Mistakes
After working for 47 years as an RN in an acute-care hospital,I retired and with relief
said,"I made it!I didn't cause any deadly mistakes."Only then did I realize the tension I
had felt all those years, even though I loved my work. Thanks for helping to make the
public aware of the situation.
BONNIE BACH,Peoria,Illinois
As a pharmacy technician,I work every day with the constant fear and realization that

Christmas time with kids is filled with warm traditions:Listening to Christmas music
while decorating the tree, going to look at Christmas lights with hot chocolate in hand, and
taking the kids to visit Santa Claus.Well, delete that last one.At least for my family.
Parents think about how fun it will be at first to take their kids to see Santa,or tell
them gifts are on their way from Santa, but this comes with a series of annoying questions
about Mr.Claus like how he makes it to all the houses in one night,as well as the broken
trust after revealing the truth.I didn't want that.
You may think that our Christmases were rigid(僵a硬的),stuffy, and without any
warmth or magic.I don't think so.Part of that is due to what I taught my kids about
Christmas.Instead of telling them Santa is real,I told them it most likely has its origins in
St.Nicholas,a man who was kind and generous to children in need.Netflix's 2021 movie
"A Boy Called Christmas"is a useful tool for helping kids connect Christmas myths and
traditions with reality while keeping the spirit of generosity alive.
The month of December is filled with movie and game nights, plays and concerts.
These family traditions have added flavor to my kids'entire childhood.Hopefully, they
know now that it's the time with family, doing special things together, that creates the
magic and that my love for them goes well beyond just one day-and that magic, wonder
and awe can happen any time with family, especially if we remain generous and grateful.
My kids are older now,and they're glad they didn't believe the myth of Santa. It was
one fewer bad memory for them, one fewer blow to their innocent childhood.

D.To stress that shared family time is the core of Christmas'charm.
27.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Rigid but caring.

When we talk of human actions harming the environment,we often think of pollution,
overuse of resources or destruction of habitats. But introducing new species into areas
where they don't naturally live can also be destructive. One such invasive (
species is the zebra mussel.
Zebra mussels live in fresh water and are native to the Caspian and Black Seas, which
are found in between Europe and Asia. These seas are less salty than most,so a freshwater
species like the zebra mussel can live there and in nearby lakes.By attaching onto ships,
the mollusks(软体动物)have spread to much of Europe and North America,.causing a
problem for the environment and humans alike.
When species are abruptly introduced to a new ecosystem, they often damage the
balance of that ecosystem, and zebra mussels are no exception. They feed by eating
phytoplankton(浮游植物)and other nutrients out of the water when they pass through
their shells, and they do so with striking efficiency. This means that when zebra mussels
arrive in a new area, they consume so much phytoplankton that other species that also eat
the same food source struggle to get a suiucient anount of food.Since those other
creatures,in turn, are a food source for still other species, zebra mussels harm everything
in the lake.
Zebra mussels also create problems for humans because they multiply so quickly.
They often grow on objects made by humans, and groups of them can prevent these
objects from functioning. For example, zebra mussels have been known to obstruct the
flow of water through pipes, which can prevent communities from getting clean drinking
water. They attach to these objects firmly enough that they can prove difficult and
expensive to clean.
Removal of zebra mussels is incredibly difficult,so only by stopping them from
spreading can people limit the troubles they cause.Governments of areas affected are
taking steps to prevent their spread mostly by privately-owned boats. So,boaters must
clean, drain ()and dry their boats and motors before entering one lake or another to
defend against their further spread.
28.Why does the author mention the environmental problems in the beginning?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To predict the ending.
C.To emphasize the effects.
D.To illustrate an argument.
29.What can we learn about zebra mussels?
A.They need salty water to survive.
B.They only exist in Europe and Asia.
C.They often break the balance of the ecosystem.
D.They eat less phytoplankton than any other species.
30.What does the underlined word "obstruct"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Avoid.
B.Block.
C.Control.
D.Direct.
31.What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.The damages caused by zebra mussels.
B.The difficulties zebra mussels encounter.
C.The measures to stop zebra mussels spreading.

When visiting a doctor in the future, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual
version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that
can be shown onto a physician's computer screen.Updated with your latest vital signs,it
will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis and provide personalized treatments for
the patients.
No matter how unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University of
London (QMUL)already use computer simulations (of the hearts of patients to test
different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this
way on someone's real heart.
Digital twins are starting to be seen everywhere. They can not only monitor the health
of jet engines on airliners, but also help carmakers spend fewer years on the development
of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being powered by recent
progress in artificial intelligence (Al),which gives twins the ability to make predietions
about their physical counterparts(对应物),and adjust themselves based on new
information.
Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems.allowing
people to have a look into the future. For businesses, this should mean better designs and
operations.For society,the promise is also fascinating:personalized health care,and ways
to prevent the earth from environmental disasters.
Could these virtual twins go out of control? They might if they are programmed badly,
or hacked into.Digital twins will take in mountains of data, some of it wrong and much of
it raising concerns about privacy.Yet those risks are a natural part of technological
progress. The appearance of the digital mirror world will raise new questions, but its
potential benefits are already easy to see.
32.Which of the following best describes a digital twin?
A.A virtual copy.
B.A video game.
C.A toy model.
D.A market database.
33.Why do researchers at QMUL use computer simulations of hearts?
A.To reduce the time of the heart operation.
B.To use real hearts much more conveniently.
C.To help increase the patients'recovery rates.
D.To avoid the danger of experimenting on real hearts.
34.How does AI contribute to the development of digital twins?
A.It increases the efficiency of simulations through data analysis.
B.It creates accurate digital copies for medical and industrial use.
C.It enables digital twins to predict results and adapt on their own
D.It improves virtual models by adding real-time monitoring features.
35.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Digital Twins:A Potential Threat to Privacy
B.Digital Twins:The Future of Problem-Solving
C.Digital Twins:A New Age of Medical Treatment
D.Digital Twins:A Double-Edged Sword of Technology
第二节(满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中的
两项为多余选项。
How to charge an electric vehicle (EV)is one of the biggest concerns people have
when working out whether going electric is right for them.It is true that sometimes
gaining access to reliable charging can seem a bit tricky.36
First, download an app with a comprehensive map of the public charging points show
ing their locations, how powerful they are,and whether they're working. All this is vital
information because, even if you have public charging points nearby, you will need
alternatives in case they are in use.37
A growing number of property owners are renting out their charging points and drive
ways to other local EV drivers when they're not using them.38 Thus, your car gets
charged, the owners make money, and emissions are reduced.
39.For example, when your car is running out of juice, you'd just pull up to a
battery-change station from your car brand and sit in the car while a fully charged unit is
changed in.The Chinese EV brand Nio does this, but isn't available in the UK as yet.
For now,if charging access remains difficulty for you,it's still possible to go electric
in part.40.Many hybrid(混合的)cars are now good for50 miles of electric
running before you need to use the engine. So,if most of your driving is local, you might
only need to find a charger once or twice a week, while you have the backup of a fuel
engine for long journeys.
A.But it may be easier than you think
B.It actually worked out much cheaper
C.There are also other innovative ways to get your EV going
D.A plug-in EV combines a petrol engine with a smaller battery
E.A"fast"charger usually takes eight hours to fully charge an EV
F.So you need to get a good feel for where your nearest points are
G.You can find a map of homeowners whose charging points are available

Most people think that procrastination (is a negative habit. But people like
me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our"slower"approach to
getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastinator in my family. My parents and sister were all bom with the
"do it right now"gift. They are always in a rush,as if closely rushed by an invisible
deadline.Personally,I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern
about my tendencies, saying "Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today,""No
way!"I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people
procrastinated when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these
cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This was because our minds continue to
reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could
lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My
method of getting things done was just as good as my sister's...or so I thought.
At school we'd been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final
assessment,my teacher Mr.Smith announced an exciting project that each student would
have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small
building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners
receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the
cafeteria."I have no clue how I could get it done,"my friend Nate sighed in despair.I
didn't say anything, not because I shared his anxiety but because I was not nervous at all.I
loved hands-on projects!Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria,I was fully
convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So
relaxed was I that I didn't give it a second thought for weeks
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Before I knew it,I had only one day left for the project.
I was exceptionally nervous when the teacher walked onto the podium to announce
the winner.
