Lena was a young dancer who loved performing on stage. But one day in 2019, she fell during a dance show and hurt her back very badly. Doctors told her she might never walk or dance again, Lena felt scared and sad. However, she remembered her little sister Mia, who always said, “You’re the best dancer in the world!” This gave Lena hope. “I’ll try again, for Mia,” she told herself.
During her time in the hospital, Lena met Carlos, a 15-year-old boy. Carlos had lost his leg in a car accident and felt angry at life. But when he saw Lena practicing small leg movements every day, even when it was painful, he started to feel hopeful. “If Lena can keep trying, maybe I can too,” Carlos said. With Lena’s encouragement, Carlos began using a special artificial (人造的) leg. A year later, he joined a basketball team for people with disabilities and even won a medal!
Lena worked hard too. After eight months, she surprised everyone by moving her toes. A few weeks later, she stood up with help. Two years after her accident, Lena did something even more amazing. She danced at a hospital event. Though her movements were slow, the audience (观众) cried loudly. One nurse said, “She’s teaching us all about courage.” Now, Lena runs a group called Wings. It helps people who face big challenges through art and sports. ①In ancient China, willow (柳树) branches (树枝) were often given as gifts between friends and family members. But do you know why willow branches became a symbol of saying goodbye?
②One reason is that willow trees are strong and can grow in almost any type of soil, whether it’s wet or dry. Because of this, giving a willow branch to say goodbye shows you hope they will get used to their new living environment easily. Meanwhile (同时), in Chinese, the pronunciation of the willow tree “liu (柳)” is similar to that of the character “liu (留)”, which means “to stay”. So, offering a willow branch is like asking someone to stay, even though you know that they have to leave.
③This tradition is said to have started during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, was a popular place to say goodbye. People would often stop there and hand willow branches to those who were leaving. Willow branches are also often mentioned in poems. During the Tang and Song dynasties, when travel became easier, poets (诗人) often wrote about the sadness of parting. For example, Wang Wei wrote in his poem, “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.”
④From Han Dynasty bridges to modern airports, willow branches remind us how ancient Chinese wisdom turned nature into emotional text messages. Next time you see a willow tree, remember—its branches once carried more warm goodbyes than any smartphone emoji (表情符号)!
19. The Chinese character “留 (liú)” mentioned in the article means ________.

You may have a house robot that can do housework for you. But is it so smart? Meet Laura, a robot in the National Library in Madrid, Spain, copying out the old books and writings in its collection. See Aurora, a headless dog-sized robot used to keep birds and other animals away at an Alaskan airport. Watch another 1.8 meter-tall legless robot called EveR6, waving its arms to guide musicians through a performance.
Those robots above require artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能). AI is a computer system (系统) that can understand languages, make decisions and solve problems. AI can be taught skills using a process called machine learning. Humans give AI information such as books, photos or videos to train it. The more information it studies, the better it can do its job.
___▲___. For example, when you watch TV, AI is watching you. It’ll know what your favorite is and suggest similar ones. In hospitals, AI is very good at suggesting treatments and can even invent new medicines. To cut down food waste, some schools introduce online systems for the students to choose meals ahead of time. In cities, AI is used to watch out for cars that make black smoke. It works together with the police and transportation teams to stop them and keep the air clean. AI can help us fight climate (气候) change by finding clever ways to reduce energy use.
Some people worry that AI will take away a large number of jobs and also fear that AI could develop out of our control and bring danger to humans. However, AI is expected to be a more powerful production tool that will help humans achieve more in less time. It is believed that the flying car will be made to offer an easier way out of the morning traffic jam (交通堵塞). Humans imagine AI might even find a way to solve the problems of our energy needs completely. Anyway, there is still a long journey for humans and AI.
23. What BIG question does paragraph 2 answer?
A. What is AI? B. Why are AI robots made?
C. Where is AI used? D. How many AI robots are mentioned?
24. Which of the following can be put in ___▲___?

C. Humans wonder if AI could think D. AI has become part of daily life
25. In the future, AI is expected to be able to ________.
A. suggest TV programs B. cut down food waste
C. invent new medicines D. help produce enough energy
26. What would the author write about after the last paragraph?

What is at the top of the world’s food chain? Humans are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest! We could not catch up with most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.
People’s inventions help a lot, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves. The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller.
The wild rabbits competed for the grass with the sheep and cows. Much of the grassland became desert because the rabbits destroyed (毁坏) it seriously.

A. “Don’t travel” B. “To remember” C. “To grow” D. “To stay”
20. “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green” was written to ________.
A. describe a beautiful season B. celebrate a house ceremony
C. express the feelings of separation D. describe a meaningful party
21. According to the passage, we can know ________.
A. ancient Chinese were wise to express the feeling
B. smartphone emojis carry more warm goodbyes
C. it’s difficult to grow willow trees in the dry soil
D. a poet must be good at writing about sadness of parting
22. Which is the right structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1 ②= Paragraph 2…)
A. B. C. D.
D
A. AI will be developed rapidly B. Humans depend too much on AI
C. Humans wonder if AI could think D. AI has become part of daily life
25. In the future, AI is expected to be able to ________.
A. suggest TV programs B. cut down food waste
C. invent new medicines D. help produce enough energy
26. What would the author write about after the last paragraph?
A. The end of AI. B. The history of AI.
C. The way to get along with AI. D. The skill of making AI robots.
