In South Africa, a former passenger train now serves as a travelling medical center to provide health services to people in need.
The train is known as Phelophepa, which means “good, clean, health”. It travels across South Africa to provide medical care to a mix of patients for whom usual health care is unavailable (难以获得的) or rare. The train has been operating since the early 1990s. The train carries medical professionals around the country, even to the most rural villages. Officials say the service helps at least 375,000 South Africans each year.
The care patients receive is different from the government’s main public health care system. That system serves an estimated 84 percent of the population. But government insurance plans are too costly for many people to pay for.
Thethi we Mahlangu has used the health train and recently spoke to the media about her experiences. She said local health clinics in her area — in Tembisa — cannot effectively serve her needs. “There we are not treated well,” Mahlangu said. She noted that when people ask about such questions, the medical workers say they simply need bigger hospitals.
When the train began in 1994, many people in South Africa still lived in rural villages with little availability to health centers. The time was a period of great change in South Africa. Today, the train assists the growing populations of the capital, Pretoria, as well as Johannesburg, the country’s economic center.
Shemona Kendiah, the train’s manager, said that the train could remain in one place for lots of days to see as many people as possible. Those going to major population centers — like Tembisa — can end up staying up to two weeks.
The patient, Jane Mabuza, got a full health examination as well as services for her teeth. She believes the train will be able to reach many more people in other areas. “Here on the train you never hear that anything has been finished,” Mabuza added.
24. What challenge do many South Africans face in getting healthcare?
A. Local health clinics refuse to treat them.
B. The country lacks medical professionals.
C. The Phelophepa train cannot reach rural areas.
D. Government insurance is not affordable for them.
25. Why does Mahlangu prefer the Phelophepa train to local clinics?
A. Local clinics have no proper medical facilities.
B. The train provides faster service than hospitals.
C. The train offers more specialized treatments.
D. Local clinic staff often reject patients.
26. How does the author stress the impact of the Phelophepa train?
A. Sharing fictional stories.
B. Listing some medical terms.
C. Using direct quotations from patients.
D. Comparing with other healthcare programs.
27. How does Jane Mabuza feel about the Phelophepa train?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.

We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be tech-savvy (精通技术的). However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to exert their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
28. Why do many parents want to learn about social networking sites?
A. Because they are eager to explore technologies. B. Because they are bored with their daily life.
C. Because they want to watch their children. D. Because they start to realize their importance.
29. What might be the reason for teens to reject their parents’ friend request?
A. They have nothing to hide. B. Their privacy cannot be guaranteed.
C. They don’t want to teach their parents. D. They can’t choose friends around them.
30. Why is the survey mentioned in the passage?
A. To warn parents. B. To relieve parents. C. To challenge parents. D. To criticize parents.
31. What is most likely to be talked about next?
A. How to bridge the generation gap. B. How to make friends on social networks.
C. How to explain to parents about the rejection. D. How to use the social networking sites wisely.
D
Close to the famous Aswan Dam, the Temple of Philae, on the small island of Aguilkya, attracts visitors to the history of ancient Egypt.
Aboard his small boat, Ahmed Yehia sails peacefully towards this treasure of Egyptian heritage, which is in the heart of the ancient Nubian lands. “Just next door, I discovered Bigeh, a magical island, deserted by its islanders several years before. I wanted to help bring back people and animals that used to live there while creating value in a sustainable way,” says Yehia, the founder-manager of Eco Nubia, the first ecolodge (生态旅馆) in Aswan.
The project received support from the Egyptian government and the African Development Bank (ADB). It wants to revive (复兴) the Nubian culture and create a new ecotourism place in Egypt, serving local and international customers.
“In partnership with the Nubian community, we have put Bigeh on the map of Egyptian ecotourism,” says Yehia. Open all year round, the lodge overlooks the Temple of Philae. It has a restaurant that serves traditional Nubian food based on products grown on-site. Eco Nubia has revived the deserted island. The lodge now gives jobs to about 30 people, a third of them women.
Eco Nubia has attracted tourists globally. It has won praise from the United Nations, World Tourism Organization and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism for its impressive achievements in sustainable development. The ecolodge has attracted local and international media, including CNN which recorded a special program about it.
“Our own farm produces what we use,” says Ahmed Yehia. Owners of the ecolodge have built a community center and have created new jobs for about 50 Nubian families. With an area of 80 square meters, the community center was built according to the style of Nubian architecture (建筑). “We also want to help the people of Bigeh rebuild their homes using ancient skills of Nubian architecture while protecting the island’s natural environment,” Ahmed Yehia says.
32. What did Ahmed want to achieve by founding Eco Nubia?
A. To protect the Aswan Dam. B. To repair the Temple of Philae.
C. To bring Bigeh back to life. D. To run the first ecolodge in Egypt
33. How did Eco Nubia contribute to the local community?
A. By providing jobs to local people. B. By protecting ancient Nubian architecture.
C. By connecting the community with the ADB. D. By offering education programs to local women.
34. What is CNN’s attitude towards Eco Nubia?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Interested.

Use a piggy bank to teach saving habits.
A piggy bank isn’t just a cute decoration. It’s a child’s first savings account. ___38____ The goal is to show how money builds up over time. Watching the bank fill up becomes its own reward(回报). It teaches patience. And it starts a habit that beats unreasonable buying before it even begins.

The kids start seeing it as their own, and that shift is powerful.
____40____
Teaching the difference between needs and wants is one of the most important lessons in money management. Use real - life moments like grocery runs or online wish lists. W: Dave, what about going to Maya Bay in Thailand for a holiday this year? The magazine says it’s a very famous beach in the country.
M: I know that beach. It made headlines in 1999 when some people arrived there to film the famous Hollywood movie The Beach. Since then, tourists have flooded in this beach with as many as 4,000 visitors arriving on boats every day.
W: That’s really hard to believe.
M: Yes. Sadly, tourism ruined the natural life there. That is why the Thai government closed the beach to tourists for about four years.
W: I didn’t know it was closed for about four years. So when did it reopen?
M: It reopened in January, 2022. Now there’s a limit of 300 visitors per day.
W: Well, I think it’s a good decision.
M: I agree. Scientists there believe that the beach is a natural resource they have to preserve. Actually there’re many other great beaches in Thailand. We don’t have to visit that one.
W: You’re right. But I don’t know any other beaches.
M: It’s easy. Let’s search for some information on websites and then make a decision.
W: Good idea.

M: Welcome to Global Sports Report. Today, we highlight the London Marathon, a world-famous spring event known for its breathtaking views. The 26.2-mile journey begins in the quiet Greenwich Park, leading runners past iconic sights like the Tower Bridge and London Eye, before a grand finish near Buckingham Palace. It’s more than just a race; it’s a massive charity drive. Many participants wear creative costumes to raise funds. For instance, David, a local doctor, completed the course dressed as a superhero. He wanted to give back to the children’s hospital that successfully treated his daughter. The event also welcomes non-professionals, like 19-year-old Sarah. Despite her heavy college workload, she balanced intense study sessions with six months of training alongside her friends. Sarah ran to support a mental health charity, inspired by her brother’s personal struggles with anxiety. Ultimately, the marathon remains a powerful celebration of fitness, friendship, and the city’s incredible community spirit.

30. B 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to exert their independence.”(最近的一项调查表明,如果孩子忽略了他们的请求,父母不应该往心里去:“当一个青少年忽略父母的好友请求时,这并不一定意味着他们在隐瞒什么,而可能意味着这是他们生活中想要展现独立的一部分。”)”可知,提到这个调查是为了宽慰父母,让他们不要因为孩子拒绝好友请求而难过。故选B项。
31. C 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.(也许当你选择不把他们加到你的好友列表时,和父母交谈并给出解释会有助于减轻打击)”可知,接下来很可能会谈论如何向父母解释拒绝加他们为好友这件事。故选C项。
