Long before I had studied a second language, I had an absolute romance with my first language — English. When I was a boy, I realized that by applying certain linguistic (语言的) rules, I could coin words that could be entirely understood. If something that qualifies has qualification, I thought something that terrifies ought to have terrification. This way of thinking opened up a whole world of creativity to me that had never existed before.
However, when I started studying other languages, I lost this fascination. The more I’ve interacted with other masters of many languages, the more this seems like an almost universally shared experience: as one falls in love with other languages and digs into other forms of communication, one starts to lose an appreciation of his or her native tongue. This is perfectly natural. As we begin to expand our views in new and exciting ways through foreign languages, our native language begins to seem uninteresting, and even annoying by comparison.
But then something happened that completely refueled the love I had for my mother tongue: I encountered that same creative passion I once felt in somebody else’s work. One of my favorite books as a child was Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Reading this book over again as an adult, I was just as allured by it as when I was a kid.
Some words in this book either aren’t real words, or weren’t real words at the time that the book was written. But they feel like specific types of words that you associate with a certain sort of feeling. The linguistic differences that went into every non-content word were absolutely fascinating, and the more I read and recited poems in this book, the more I felt the familiar warm passion for English. I decided to take some focus away from foreign languages for a while just to focus on and properly appreciate my first language.
4. What could the author do at a young age?
A. Guess new words’ meanings. B. Make up non-existent words.
C. Make use of grammatical rules. D. Create new sentence structures.
5. Why did the author lose the love for English?
A. Its popularity was in decline. B. Its inflexibility was apparent.
C. It failed to offer fresh excitement. D. It gave him fewer growth chances.
6. What does the underlined word “allured” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sensed. B. Drawn. C. Persuaded. D. Supported.
7. What finally made the author appreciate English?
A. Poems’ complex emotions. B. Special writing techniques.
C. Lewis Carroll’s creativity. D. Intense love for literature.
B 5. C 6. B 7. C
根据第一段中的“When I was a boy, I realized that by applying certain linguistic (语言的) rules, I could coin words that could be entirely understood.(当我还是个小男孩的时候,我意识到通过应用某些语言规则,我可以创造出完全能被理解的单词。)”
根据第二段中的“As we begin to expand our views in new and exciting ways through foreign languages, our native language begins to seem uninteresting, and even annoying by comparison.(当我们开始通过外语以新的和令人兴奋的方式扩展我们的视野时,相比之下,我们的母语开始显得无趣,甚至令人厌烦。)”
根据第三段中的“One of my favorite books as a child was Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Reading this book over again as an adult, I was just as allured by it as when I was a kid.(我小时候最喜欢的书之一是刘易斯·卡罗尔的《爱丽丝镜中奇遇记》。成年后再读这本书,我依然像小时候一样allured。)”可知,作者小时候对语言着迷,成年后也一样被吸引,所以划线词“allured”意为“吸引”,与“Drawn”含义相近。故选B项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Some words in this book either aren’t real words, or weren’t real words at the time that the book was written. (这本书中的一些单词要么不是真实的单词,要么在写这本书的时候不是真实的单词。但它们让你联想到某种特定感觉的特定类型的单词。每一个非内容词中的语言差异都绝对令人着迷,我读和背诵这本书中的诗歌越多,我就越能感受到对英语的熟悉和热情。我决定暂时把注意力从外语上移开,专注于并好好欣赏我的母语。)”可知,是刘易斯·卡罗尔的创造力最终让作者重新欣赏英语。故选C项。
C
The belief that we need meat for protein and iron, and dairy for calcium is a misconception. These nutrients are abundant in plant-based foods. Omega-3, often associated with fish, can be obtained from algae and seaweed. A plant-based diet can provide all essential nutrients, except for vitamin B12, which can be supplemented.
Eating less meat has many benefits. Poor diet, including processed foods and red meat, is a major cause of death in the U.S, leading to heart disease and cancer. Studies show that vegetarian and vegan diets can reduce the risk of these diseases. The World Health Organization classifies processed meat as carcinogenic.
Meat consumption also harms animals and the environment. Factory farming is often cruel and unsafe for animals and workers, leading to disease spread and antibiotic resistance. Meat production contributes to climate change through deforestation and methane emissions. A vegetarian or vegan diet can significantly reduce personal carbon emissions.
While large-scale action is needed to combat climate change and improve food availability, individuals can also make a difference. Small changes like eating less meat can have big health and environmental benefits. Influential people should act as role models and advocate for better nutrition. As the EAT-Lancet Commission states, food is a powerful tool for improving human health and the environment.
Even those with limited means can make small changes, such as avoiding meat one day a week or adopting a “flexitarian” approach to meals. These modest reductions in meat consumption can yield significant health and environmental benefits, especially when applied on a population level.
8. What is the author’s perspective on plant-based diets?
A. They are rich in a variety of nutrients.
B. They lack omega-3.
C. They contain too much vitamin B12.
D. They are deficient in calcium.
9. What is the influence of consuming less meat?
A. It can lead to malnutrition.
B. It can benefit both animals and our planet.
C. It causes antibiotic resistance.
D. It makes the diet more expensive.
10. How can individuals decrease their meat intake, according to the article?
A. Only consume meat during weekends.
B. Choose between a meat-free day or a flexible eating approach.
C. Only consume plant-based meals.
D. Avoid consumption of dairy products.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Eating Meat Good for Your Health?
B. How to Reduce Carbon Emissions by Eating More Meat
C. The Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet Beyond Nutrition
D. How to Live Without Nutrients from Animal Products?
A 9. B 10. B 11. C

D
Urban areas have long been considered lacking in biodiversity, especially by Americans, who believe that nature can flourish (繁荣) only where cities do not exist. This is called “the biological deserts fallacy” by the authors of a new paper in Bioscience, who make the case that cities contribute more than we think to regional biodiversity.
A 2017 analysis of 529 bird species showed that 66 were found only in urban areas. Some species, such as peregrine falcons, have higher survival rates or greater reproductive success in cities than in rural areas. In Australia, researchers identified 39 rare “last chance” species that survive only in urban habitats.
Cities do this by offering diverse and unconventional habitats that support species. These include traditional urban green spaces like parks and backyards, as well as golf courses, urban farms and community gardens. In addition, green facilities, such as green roofs and constructed wetlands, also attract wildlife.
The positive roles cities play in supporting biodiversity can be strengthened through intentional design. For example, cities can be planned to provide shelter from pressures such as competition. Designing green roofs and setting up nesting boxes can increase prey (猎物) availability for urban raptors (猛禽) such as Cooper’s hawks, peregrine falcons, and Mississippi kites. Cities can also design some stopover sites for travelling birds to rest and refuel. Large city parks, such as Highbanks Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio, serve as critical stopover habitats for thrushes, warblers and other travelling songbirds.
But urban conservation biology is still in its early stages, and much remains to be learned. “We often assume that wildlife will behave the same in urban habitats as it does in rural ones,” said Seth Magle, a biological expert. “But that is wrong. You have to throw out the entire playbook. Sometimes I joke that I feel like I’m doing research on an unknown planet.”
12. How does the author challenge “the biological deserts fallacy”?
A. By explaining data.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By citing research results.
D. By defining a new concept.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How cities support biodiversity?
B. Why wildlife declines in cities.
C. Types of urban green spaces.
D. Advantages of urban habitats.
14. Why are urban raptors mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To explain planned efforts aid city wildlife.
B. To prove raptors cannot survive in cities.
C. To show raptors’ city hunting methods.
D. To stress competition among urban wildlife.
15. What do Magle’s words imply about urban wildlife research?
A. It has made great progress.
B. It should involve more experts.
C. It is based on safe assumptions.
D. It should move beyond rural patterns.
C 13. A 14. A 15. D

根据第二段“A 2017 analysis of 529 bird species showed that 66 were found only in urban areas. Some species, such as peregrine falcons, have higher survival rates or greater reproductive success in cities than in rural areas. In Australia, researchers identified 39 rare “last chance” species that survive only in urban habitats.(2017年对529种鸟类的分析显示,有66种只存在于城市区域。有些物种,比如游隼,其在城市中的存活率或繁殖成功率要高于在农村地区的情况。在澳大利亚,研究人员发现了39种极为罕见的“最后机会”物种,它们仅在城市栖息地中生存)”可推知,作者通过引用多项调研、科研结果推翻谬论。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Cities do this by offering diverse and unconventional habitats that support species.(城市通过提供多样且特殊的栖息地来养活各类物种)”可知,本段主要讲述城市是如何维系生物多样性的。
根据第四段“The positive roles cities play in supporting biodiversity can be strengthened through intentional design.(城市在支持生物多样性方面所发挥的积极作用可以通过精心的设计得到进一步加强)”及“Designing green roofs and setting up nesting boxes can increase prey (猎物) availability for urban raptors (猛禽) such as Cooper’s hawks, peregrine falcons, and Mississippi kites.(设计绿色屋顶并设置筑巢箱能够增加城市猛禽(如库珀鹰、游隼和密西西比风鸢)的猎物数量)”可推知,列举猛禽是为举例说明人为规划措施能帮助城市野生动物。
根据最后一段““We often assume that wildlife will behave the same in urban habitats as it does in rural ones,” said Seth Magle, a biological expert. “But that is wrong. You have to throw out the entire playbook. Sometimes I joke that I feel like I’m doing research on an unknown planet.”(“我们通常认为,野生动物在城市栖息地的行为和在农村栖息地的行为是一样的,”生物学专家Seth Magle说。“但这种想法是错误的。我们必须摒弃原有的所有理论框架。有时我会开玩笑说,感觉自己仿佛是在一个未知的星球上进行研究。”)”可推知,城市野生动物研究不能沿用野外研究模式,需要跳出乡村生物研究框架。

Gag gifts are usually inexpensive novelty items intended to get a laugh. They’re often casual buys when something funny instantly brings a friend or family member to mind. Most gag gifts are not very useful. ____16____ You don’t need a special event to give someone a gag gift.
____17____ The faces of politicians are often found on gag gifts, along with political jokes. Other common designs include cartoon characters, famous funny sayings, and slightly rude jokes. Children often like gag gifts that double as tricks. Some classic examples are an innocent-looking pillow and whoopee cushion. These items have all brought laughs for generations.
When to give gag gifts? They can be given when a gift is expected but the recipient is only a nodding acquaintance For example, at an office party for an employee who is leaving, people may be expected to bring a small present even if they don’t know the person well. In this case, a coffee cup with a funny saying works well. ____18____ This adds joy to an otherwise ordinary drinking cup.
When giving a gag gift, the giver should make sure the gag will not hurt the recipient’s feelings. ____19____ However, gags highlighting a person’s shortcomings are not a good idea. They may make the person feel uncomfortable. For example, a baldhead cap would be unkind for someone worried about losing his hair; but it could be funny for someone with very thick hair who often complains about it. Gifts given on a serious or public occasion should not be overly rude. ____20____
A. Being useful is often expected.
B. But that is not their main purpose.
C. Otherwise the recipient may feel offended.
D. In this way, the gift appears to be more valuable.

Dear Mark,
Thanks for sharing the situation with me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Mark,
Thanks for sharing the issue with me! It’s interesting to hear students in your school are facing the same dilemma as we are.
Here, it’s everywhere: some peers just type the assignment topic into AI and copy the result word for word without adjusting a single sentence. Admittedly, AI is a handy helper: it can spark instant inspiration and polish our writing with refined expressions, and also cut down time spent on tedious work, leaving us more room for deep thinking. I think relying entirely on AI to churn out assignments is a big mistake.
It robs us of the chance to practice independent thinking, which is what learning is really about. We should treat AI as a supportive tool to fuel our creativity and deepen our understanding.
Curious to hear your take on this!
Yours,
Li Hua

I entered my freshman year of high school with a clear goal: work hard, stick to whatever I could succeed at and graduate with great achievements. I wouldn’t waste my time where I didn’t perform as strongly. And this belief served me well. My academic standards were high. I was the star player of all the teams I joined. My friends would joke about my pursuit of perfection, but in my eyes, it was the only sure path to success.
In the second term I joined the cross-country running club. When I came to the first practice, I was filled with the desire to make the varsity (校队) team. But as the distance we ran each practice gradually increased from three, to four, to six miles, I realized that no matter how hard I tried, I was one of the slowest on the team. This realization disappointed me. And the pain in the muscles following every practice was unbearable. I wanted to quit! What was the point of putting myself through so much pain and being the slowest racer?
Then we had our first cross-country race. When we got off the bus, the sight of the other teams warming up made my hands sweaty. When we started the race, I felt the enormous pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. It was a challenging course, consisting of a series of winding and rocking hills.
After a while I stopped running and struggled up the last hill. The steps under my feet felt as heavy as thousands of pounds, mirroring the weight of my despair. With every racer passing me, frustration washed over me-I would never win honor for my team. I’d just be letting them down.

With every passing second, my ambition fell apart. I even couldn’t find any runners around me. I thought they may be running to the final line now. It was a tiring course. Just then, I heard people calling my name from the top of the hill. Surprisingly, my coach and teammates were smiling and cheering for me. I was confused and embarrassed because my performance was terrible. However, they gave me encouragement by waving to me and applauding for me.
My team’s support encouraged me to move on. I stopped caring about my performance and ran to the final point with all my might. As I was jogging up the last section of the hill, my coach and teammates all applauded me for my efforts. Not until then did I realize my coach and teammates didn’t care how fast I ran. I learned I shouldn’t attach too much importance to the result. In fact, the process is more important. After that meet, I continued cross-country and focused on enjoying the journey.

E. Gag gifts can be almost anything that is meant for fun.
F. Gags related to someone’s special talents are often a big hit.
G. When the gift is opened, it may bring a laugh from the crowd.
