Paper shadow play, also called shadow puppetry, is one of China’s precious intangible cultural heritages with over 2,000 years of history. It started in the Western Han Dynasty and became popular in the Tang and Song dynasties across most northern China. Unlike common stage plays, all characters and scenes are made of processed donkey skin or sheep skin. Workers cut thin leather into different shapes of humans, animals and plants, paint bright colors on them, and connect each part with thin thread so players can control puppets behind a white cloth screen. Lights behind the screen project moving shadows to make vivid stories for the audience.
Old master Zhang runs a small shadow puppet workshop in Henan’s rural area. At 68 years old, he has kept making shadow puppets for 47 years. When he was a teenager, he learned the skill from his grandfather. In the past decades, he has faced lots of difficulties. Few young people wanted to learn this hard craft because making one set of puppets takes nearly one month and earnings are low. Many local shadow play groups had to stop performing for lack of audience.
Luckily, things have changed greatly in recent years. Local government gives money support to protect shadow puppetry. Master Zhang is invited to primary and middle schools to give hand-making lessons every month. Students are crazy about the colorful handcrafts. Some middle school students even choose to learn puppet making as their after-school hobby. Short videos of Zhang’s shadow plays spread online and get millions of views from home and abroad. Foreign tourists come to his workshop every vacation to watch live shows and buy small puppet gifts.
Master Zhang says he will keep passing down this old art as long as he is healthy. He hopes more young people can realize the value of traditional folk art and carry forward our fine culture.

Bionics is a new useful science that takes ideas from animals and plants to invent new machines or tools. In recent years, many high-tech products around our daily life come from bionic research. Lots of scientists spend years studying natural creatures to solve human production problems.
The lotus leaf effect is one famous bionic discovery. People find rain drops roll off clean lotus leaves without staying, and dirt falls away together with water drops. After repeated experiments, scientists find the leaf surface has special tiny uneven structures. Based on this discovery, researchers developed self-cleaning paint and waterproof building materials. Walls painted with this paint never get dirty easily even in rainy days, which greatly cuts down building cleaning cost for modern cities.
Another popular bionic design comes from kingfishers. Kingfisher birds dive into water from high air with almost no loud noise. Japanese train designers studied the bird’s pointed beak and changed the front shape of high-speed bullet trains. Before the change, trains made sharp loud sounds when rushing out of tunnels and disturbed nearby residents. After improving the head like kingfisher’s mouth, train noise dropped by over 50% and running speed rose as well.
Plants also bring great invention inspiration. The sticky burrs on grass seeds stick tightly to animal fur. A Swiss engineer got inspiration and invented Velcro, the widely-used sticky fastener used on clothes, schoolbags and sports shoes all over the world.
Scientists believe nature is the best invention textbook. More bionic products will appear in daily life with continuous natural research in the future.

Nowadays AI learning tools are widely used among middle school students. Smart search apps, AI homework tutors and online translation tools bring convenience to daily study, but they also cause many learning problems among Grade 9 students facing high school entrance examination.
Many students rely too much on AI to finish homework. Once they meet difficult math problems or hard English sentences, they copy AI’s answers directly without independent thinking. Gradually, they lose the ability to analyze problems by themselves. Some students even use AI to write full compositions instead of practicing writing skills. Teachers find students’ homework looks perfect, but students get low scores in formal exams because they never master real knowledge.
However, AI is not a bad invention itself. It is just a helpful learning tool when used properly. Top students make good use of AI in these ways: First, after finishing homework independently, they use AI to check answers and mark wrong questions, then study error reasons carefully. Second, they use AI to search background knowledge of reading articles to widen sight. Third, use AI to practice oral English by daily dialogue training.
Education experts give three suggestions for ninth graders: Set strict rules for AI using time, never let AI replace your own thinking; divide study tasks into small parts and finish by yourself first; ask teachers or classmates for help before turning to AI when stuck in difficult study points.
The coming high school entrance exam tests students’ real learning ability instead of AI’s computing power. Only treating AI as a helper instead of a replacement can students improve study step by step.
( )36. What is the main problem caused by overusing AI?
A. Students waste much spare time
B. Students lose independent thinking ability
C. Students spend lots of money on apps
D. Teachers refuse to assign homework
( )37. Which belongs to correct AI using habit?
A. Copy AI’s answers to finish homework quickly
B. Let AI write all English compositions
C. Check finished homework answers with AI
D. Use AI to finish all difficult exercises
( )38. How many expert suggestions are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
( )39. The writer’s attitude towards AI study tools is ______.
A. Completely against using AI
B. Fully support all AI use
C. Use AI properly as study helper
D. Ask schools to stop AI using
( )40. Where can we read this article most possibly?
A. Science magazine for teenagers
B. Local newspaper education column
C. Farm travel guidebook
D. Computer game magazine

Small Actions Make Big Changes
Protecting the environment doesn’t need great big deeds. In fact, small daily actions can bring great changes to our earth.
First, we should save water and electricity in daily life, turn off lights and taps when unused. Second, divide rubbish into different kinds and put them into proper bins. Third, choose walking or riding bikes instead of taking cars for short trips to cut air pollution.
Small drops make an ocean. Let’s start with little things around us and build a clean and green home together.
