Encouraging bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages equally well,at home can have many benefits on mental processes of understanding, which may be particularly helpful to kids with autism (自闭症),a new research indicates.
The new research explored the role of bilingualism in 112 children, including children with typical development and children with autism, between the ages of 7 and 12 years old.Overall, they found that children who spoke two or more languages often had stronger executive (执行) functioning skills. This means they are able to control the sudden desire and to switch between different tasks more easily than children who only speak one language.
Published in the journal Autism Research, the results are significant because executive functioning skills are a key challenge for children with autism, but are important for all kids to develop in school and later in the workplace. While executive functioning skills develop and improve across the whole life, individuals with autism often struggle with executive functioning, affecting their ability to manage daily tasks and adapt to new situations.
An idea called joint activation from the field of neuroscience (神经科学) can help explain the results.Prior research suggests that the bilingual brain has two languages constantly active and competing. As a result, the daily experience of shifting between these languages is associated with enhanced executive control.“If you have to deal with two languages, you have to control one intentionally in order to use the other. That’s the idea—that restriction or the ability to stop you from doing something might be strengthened by knowing two languages,” says Lucina Uddin, now a professor at the University of California,Los Angeles.
“This will surely bring a sense of relief to many of our families living with loved ones with autism. But maybe it takes time to translate that to families,” says Lynn Perry,an associate professor at the University of Miami.Perry intends to conduct further research with preschool children to see if bilingualism also has an impact on kids’ interpersonal skills, which are crucial for children’s social and mental development.

A.By activating the prior memory.
B.By switching to other learning tasks.
C.By preventing language competitions.

Centuries ago,the music of the Híłzaqv language echoed across a territory of rough islands, windswept beaches and thick forests. And then, the lands now in the western reaches of Canada fell quiet.Wars with neighbouring nations and disease brought the language to the edge of extinction.Today, only seventy fluent speakers remain. In some remote communities, where they don’t have high schools, students are moved hundreds of kilometres away to larger cities to complete their studies, away from their families and their land. And so the loss continues on there.
Mamakwa is a Híłzaqv, who was punished for speaking his mother tongue in school.Last year,he became the first provincial lawmaker to give a speech in Toronto legislature (议会).More than 1,000 guests attended.“For community leaders who were there,it was very emotional for them. They had tears in their eyes—not because of what I said but because they were hearing their language in a place where it was never supposed to be spoken,” he said.Mamakwa is now focusing his attention on the remaining systems that reduce the ability to speak the first languages of the land.
Recently, there is a cheerful sense of hope.Community efforts have taken on a renewed intensity.New resources have been poured into preservation and education, including compiling (汇编) vast information from the current fluent speakers. Therefore,Híłzaqv culture is being normalized for kids in a much deeper way now than it ever was before.
“You never want to lose the body of knowledge and language that you had as a people. But our language is also growing. There are words emerging and concepts emerging that are being included in our language to reflect the new reality we live in,and the new way that we live and work and be together. That’s a good thing,” said Mamakwa.

In an age where screens dominate our lives,Read-A-Thon offers a unique way to combine the joy of reading with the power of collective action. 1 For instance, reading 10 books a month will bring funds to buy books for rural schools.Read on to successfully organize a read-a-thon.
Just as you need a destination before starting a journey,a read-a-thon requires clear goals.Prioritize setting a reading target: Will participants aim to collectively read 500 books in a week? Choosing a charitable purpose comes next, for example,to restore a community library. 2 Sharing these objectives upfront helps participants understand how their reading efforts create real-world impact.
3 For local groups like classmates or neighbors, host an in-person gathering at a community center where everyone reads together. For broader reach, use apps to track reading progress online. Many modern read-a-thons blend both approaches: using digital tools to monitor milestones while organizing offline book-sharing sessions to spark connections.
As the event concludes, ensure all donations are carefully verified (核实) and securely transferred to the chosen cause through trusted platforms. Also, celebrate achievements—award certificates to top readers, display infographics (信息图表) showing how funds will be used, and share photos of beneficiaries (like students holding new books). These steps turn abstract numbers into heartfelt stories. 4
From classroom reading clubs to city-wide reading relays,read-a-thons prove that when books meet compassion, reading transcends personal enjoyment. 5 Just like the slogan from a high school event last year,“Every page you read makes the world a little better.”
A.Turn efforts into action.
B.Tailor the event to your participants.
C.It becomes a torch that can light up others.
