Last October, 16-year-old Chen Yuxi from Shanghai made headlines when she became the youngest person to win the National Youth AI Innovation Award. Her project? A small device that helps elderly people with memory loss find their way home.
The idea came to her one rainy evening. “My grandfather got lost on his way back from the market,” Chen recalled. “He was 15 for three hours until a neighbor found him. That night, I decided I had to do 16 .”
She spent six months learning how to use Codex, an AI programming tool that turns natural language into code. “At first, I was 17 . I had never written a single line of code before,” she admitted. “But Codex allowed me to describe what I wanted in plain English, and it would generate the basic code. Then I could 18 it step by step.”
Her final device is a small keychain with a GPS tracker and a simple button. When pressed, it sends the person’s location to a family member’s phone. But the real innovation is the AI voice system. It can recognize when an elderly person sounds 19 and automatically send a “help needed” signal.
“What surprised me most was how quickly the technology improved,” Chen said. “In January, I tested the first version, and it failed 70% of the time. 20 in April, after dozens of improvements, it worked with 95% accuracy.”
Her teacher, Mr. Zhang, said Chen’s success was not just about talent. “She never 21 . Each time the code failed, she would sit down, find the problem, and try again. That is the true spirit of innovation.”
Now a company has offered to produce Chen’s device. It will be 22 in hospitals and retirement homes across China later this year. When asked what advice she had for other teenagers, Chen smiled. “Don’t wait until you feel 23 . Start with a small problem you care about. And remember, even the most complex AI started with a single line of code. Your first try doesn’t have to be 24 . It just has to be a start.”

Today is Thursday. Mrs. Gao gave us a unique piece of homework the day before yesterday—to record the wonders of nature through observation (观察). She encouraged us to step out of our classroom and explore the world around us. We are supposed to find a subject that interests us and write a report. For me, that meant setting out to see the growth of a butterfly. It was more than just a project. It was a journey that brought me closer to the magic of life itself.
School: Sunshine Middle School
Class & Grade: Class 2, Grade 9
Name: Zhao Dayu
Observation Report: The Butterfly
The first stage:
The life cycle of a butterfly goes through 4 stages. It begins with an egg. A butterfly must find a place to lay eggs. Plants like leaves are good choices. And the shapes, sizes and colors of them are different.
The second stage:
A small caterpillar (毛虫) will come out of an egg when outer conditions are right. The caterpillar starts to eat right away. It eats plants. At this stage, it grows very fast, and it keeps eating in order to have enough energy.
The third stage:
When the caterpillar is ready, it will find a safe place. It hangs from a tree and builds a cocoon (茧) around itself. It hangs there and does not move until it becomes a chrysalis (蛹), but changes are happening inside.
The fourth stage:
A butterfly breaks out of the chrysalis. It opens its wings and is ready to fly. It’s a process that takes me from the discovery of a tiny egg to a fully-grown butterfly.

Jamilla Redstone sat under the big willow tree in her backyard, lost in a book. Then something unusual near the roots (根) caught her eye.
“What’s that?” she wondered. Jamilla loved treasure-hunting games. Last year, she discovered old coins and colorful rocks in the garden. Excited, she picked up a shovel and began to dig. To her surprise, a small piece of blue clay (陶土) appeared.
“Maybe there’s more!” she thought excitedly. Taking her little shovel, she dug carefully around the spot. One by one, five more blue pieces appeared. After washing them clean, Jamilla noticed that each piece had letters carved (雕刻) into it.
“Look what I found, Papa! Do these letters mean something?” she called, running inside with her treasures.
Papa’s eyes brightened. “Ah, Jamilla, that’s a very special find! Come with me,” he said excitedly, reaching for an old family book. “This book holds the names of our family — your mother, your grandparents, and even those who lived long before.”
He spread the clay pieces on the table. “Now, let’s fit them together like a word puzzle.”
When four pieces clicked into place, Jamilla noticed the letters A, R, L, J lining up in order. Her eyes widened. “Wait! Those are the first letters of our names!” she cried.
Papa smiled proudly. “Exactly! I made that clay pot on the day you were born. I carved the first letters of our names—A for Great Aunt Alice, R for your mom, Ruisa, L for me, Leonardo, and J for you, Jamilla. Then I planted willow seeds in it. As the tree grew, the pot broke, but the pieces stayed here.”
Jamilla asked. “So the willow tree grew from the pot you made for me?”
“Yes,” Papa said softly. “And today, you found pieces of our family story right under its roots.”
Jamilla looked up at the tree, its leaves waving gently in the sunlight. The broken clay wasn’t just dirt — it was a memory, a symbol of love and growth. She realized that sometimes, the best treasures aren’t gold or jewels, but the stories of family waiting to be discovered.

The digital (数字化的) age has changed the way we live, learn and communicate. For students, this brings both chances and challenges. Understanding the effects and keeping learning are keys for success nowadays.
On the positive side, the Internet provides endless resources (资源) for learning. Students can get online courses and research materials with just a few clicks. It also makes group work easier, allowing students to work on group projects or ask for help from friends and teachers anytime, anywhere.
But there are a few disadvantages too. Spending too much time online can lead to distractions (分心), such as social media or video games, which can influence focus and efficiency. What’s more, too much screen time may harm physical health, causing lots of eye problems. Some wrong information is another risk which students need to be careful with.
To put the digital age to good use, students should develop healthy habits. First, control screen time and schoolwork instead of entertainment always goes first. Use apps or tools that stop distractions during study periods. Second, practise critical (批判) thinking when surfing the Internet. Always check information from reliable (可靠的) sources before accepting it as true. Third, keep a balance between online and offline activities. Spend time exercising, reading books, or having face-to-face conversations.
The digital age is here to stay, and it’s up to us to use it wisely. By staying focused, informed, and balanced, students can use the power of technology to achieve their goals while avoiding its bad effects.

The Magic of Shadows
It is Saturday afternoon in a small town near Xi’an. Wang Weifang and his friends are putting on a special show. The audience can hear them clearly, but they cannot see the artists. That is because the artists stand behind a white screen. They are performing a shadow puppet (皮影) play. This is a traditional Chinese folk art with a long history. Today, it is on UNESCO’s list of intangible (非物质) cultural heritage.
Shadow puppet plays in China started over 2,000 years ago. Artists use light to make shadows on a screen and tell stories. This is one of the earliest kinds of “moving pictures”. It has influenced modern films and cartoons a lot. Sadly, this old art was once in danger of dying out. Artists like Wang don’t want to see that, so they work hard to keep it alive.
Shadow puppets were first made of paper. Later, people used animal skin because it lasts much longer. That is why they are called “piying” in Chinese, which means “skin shadows”. Artists cut the skin into the shapes of people or animals. Then they paint each puppet in bright colors and put it on a stick. Some puppets can even move their arms, legs and eyes.
During the show, Wang and his friends hold the puppets close to the screen. A light shines from behind, so the audience can see the shadows move. The artists also speak for different characters and sing old songs. The audience can hardly take their eyes off the screen.
These days, Wang and his friends try new ways to protect this art. They add modern ideas to old stories. For example, the puppets can even do modern dance moves! This makes people laugh and cheer. They hope more young people will love this traditional art.
58.Where are the artists standing when they are performing a shadow puppet play?
59.Why do artists like Wang Weifang work hard to keep shadow puppet plays alive?
60.Why are shadow puppets called “piying” in Chinese?
61.What do Wang and his friends do to attract more young people to the art?
62.Do you think young people should learn traditional arts like shadow puppet play? Why or why not?

【参考范文】
Dear Tom,
Thanks for your email. It’s great to hear that you’re interested in how we learn coding with AI here.
Yes, my school uses Codex in computer science class. We learn basic concepts first, then use it to write complex programs. For example, we describe ideas, and Codex generates code for us to check and improve. The biggest advantage is less time on mistakes and more on creative thinking. Many classmates now enjoy coding. However, some rely too much on AI and forget basics, unable to fix errors when they happen.
I recommend your school try such tools, but use AI as a helper, not a replacement. Teach students to understand code, not just generate it.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
