Since then, I have been more careful about protecting nature. I always take my rubbish home when I go hiking. I also tell my friends to ____13____ paper and plastic to reduce waste. I know that small actions can make a big difference.

In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget the importance of nature and the environment. But they play an important role in our daily lives, affecting (影响) everything from the air we breathe to the food we eat.
Nature is all around us. It includes the forests, rivers, mountains, and oceans that cover the earth. These natural places are not just beautiful to look at; they are also necessary for us to live. Forests, for example, produce oxygen (氧气) and help clean the air. They also provide homes for many animals and plants. Without forests, many kinds of animals and plants would disappear, and the air would be worse.
Rivers and oceans are necessary for our water supply. They collect rainwater and snowmelt, which then flow into lakes and rivers, providing us with the fresh water we need to drink and use for farming. Without these water bodies, life on Earth would be very different and much more challenging.
However, human activities are causing harm to nature and the environment. Deforestation, pollution, and climate change are just a few examples of the problems we face. Deforestation, which is the cutting down of trees, leads to loss of homes for animals and reduces the amount of oxygen in the air. Pollution, caused by things like factory smoke and plastic waste, can poison our water and soil, making it unsafe for us and animals.
We need to take care of the environment. Simple actions like recycling (回收利用), reducing waste, and saving water can help a lot. By respecting and protecting nature, we can ensure a healthier and longer-lasting future for ourselves and future generations.
Remember, nature is not just something to look at from far away; it’s an important part of our lives that we need to love and protect.
21.Why are nature and the environment important in our daily lives?
A.Because they provide more beautiful scenery.
B.Because they affect the air we breathe and the food we eat.
C.Because they only make our lives more challenging.
D.Because they only affect the appearance of forests.
22.Which of the following is NOT a benefit provided by forests?
A.Producing oxygen. B.Providing homes for animals and plants.
C.Cleaning the air. D.Supplying fresh water for drinking.
23.According to the passage, which of the following is bad for the environment?
A.Recycling. B.Saving water. C.Factory smoke. D.Reducing waste.
24.What does the underlined word “deforestation” mean in paragraph 4?
A.The planting of new trees. B.The cutting down of trees.
C.The protection of forests. D.The creation of new homes for animals.
25.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Nature is only important for its beauty.
B.Humans should stop all activities to protect the environment.
C.We should care and protect nature and the environment.
D.Climate change is the biggest threat to the environment today.
C
People in Western countries are eating less meat these days. Some are doing it for their health, while others want to protect animals. But now, there is a new and important reason to do so.
A recent study in the journal Nature shows that eating less meat can help to prevent climate change. Raising farm animals is harmful to the environment. When animals such as cows eat food, they produce large amounts of greenhouse gases in their stomachs, which are a main cause of global warming. According to scientific reports, about 17 percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from animal farming. In addition, in order to have enough space to raise these animals, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they take in greenhouse gases.
The study found that if people follow certain guidelines to eat less meat, emissions from food could be reduced by almost one-third by 2050. Moreover, if people keep a diet without meat for a long time, emissions could drop by 63 percent.
However, it won’t be easy to get people to change their eating habits. The study says that people in Western countries need to reduce their meat eating by 90 percent to really help the climate. That’s why scientists are looking for new foods to replace meat. Some experts believe insects (昆虫) could be one solution. A UN report stated that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. Insects, for example, produce 75 percent less greenhouse gases than farm animals. Besides, lab-grown meat is also being carefully studied as another possible choice for the future.
26.Western people are eating less meat recently ________.
A.to protect the environment B.to reduce waste
C.to protect animals D.to stay healthy
27.According to Paragraph 2, raising farm animals leads to ________.
A.the improvement of climate B.less greenhouse gas emissions
C.the reduction of forests D.the increase of animals
28.How much less meat should Western people eat to influence the climate?
A.17 percent. B.90 percent. C.75 percent. D.63 percent.
29.Why is it difficult to help the climate through eating less meat?
A.Because it is expensive to raise farm animals.
B.Because it is hard to change people’s eating habits.
C.Because meat is necessary for people’s health.
D.Because farmers disagree the reduction of farm animals.
30.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Misunderstanding farm animals B.Less meat, better environment
C.A better use for greenhouse gas D.Eating insects—a healthy diet
