My family moved to Melbourne where my father re-entered academia and my mother reshaped my life with devotion and patience. Abandoning dreams of a career may have been in keeping with her era, but my mother threw herself into motherhood. My tennis shoes always shone thanks to her care when I slept. At lunch, my friends crowded around my lunch, the tastiest with enough to spare.
My brother and I left home around age 16 for a better education. Our big house fell empty. There was no help and even no phone connection. Her “coping strategy” was to remind herself that she wanted us to have what she did not. Back then I was occupied with my own needs; today, I realise my mother paid for my education with her tears.
If her self-sacrifice lifted me to greater heights, her second quality built the foundation. When I was young, my mother displayed in me an absolute faith and absolute love. In her eyes, I could do no wrong that I couldn’t fix. She didn’t say overly sweet things to declare her love, but just being with her made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. My mother allowed me to live a fuller life than hers without bargain, or guilt. To this she added extraordinary generosity. Today I credit my strength and stability to the certainty that, regardless of who else judges me, my mother will not.
Currently I have my own kids. They are children of a different time. Today’s mothers have competing demands related to professional and personal goals. Sometimes, I must put my work above their needs. My mom tried to be my “everything” parent while I am what is called the good-enough mother at my best. We may differ in our methods and tools, but the essence of motherhood remains constant.
24. How does the author show her mom’s quality in the first paragraph?
A. By quoting a remark. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By analyzing the cause.
25. Which words can best describe the author’s mother?
A. Optimistic and persevering. B. Hardworking and demanding.
C. Devoted and selfless. D. Cheerful and reliable.
26. What does the underlined phrase “good-enough mother” probably refer to in the last paragraph?
A. A mother who pursues perfection in childcare.
B. A mother who devotes herself wholly to her work.
C. A mother who places her kids’ needs above all else.
D. A mother who tries to balance her parenting with her career.
27. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Art of Being a Mother
B. Lessons of Love and Strength
C. Motherhood: The Greatest Adventure
D. Motherhood: A Journey of Sacrifice and Strength
C
The mysterious “Great Attractor” is pulling the Milky Way galaxy off course. No matter what you’re doing right now—sitting, standing, walking—you’re moving.
Specifically, you’re moving at least four different ways. First, the Earth is turning very fast while it’s in space, going about 1,000 miles per hour, or 1,600 kilometers per hour. This turning makes our days and nights. Next, the Earth and the other planets are going around the sun. We move at about 67,000 miles per hour, or 108;000 kilometers per hour. This movement makes our seasons and years. Also, the sun and everything around it is going around the middle of our galaxy (星系), the Milky Way, really fast, over 500,000 miles per hour, or 828,000 kilometers per hour. Plus, everything in the universe is always getting bigger as it spreads out.
But a long time ago, in the 1970s, space experts saw that something was different about the galaxies close to us, called the Local Group. These galaxies were being pulled away from their normal path really fast, towards something we couldn’t see. They named this place the Great Attractor, but it’s hard to learn more about it because we can’t see it well.
“The Milky Way has so many stars and dust, which hides the information we want to see in that direction. So our galaxy is hiding the Great Attractor,” says Jorge Moreno, a space expert at a college. This place we can’t see is called the Zone of Avoidance by people who study space. We still don’t know everything about why the Milky Way and the other galaxies are being pulled off course, but there have been some ideas. The newest idea is a very big group of galaxies called Laniakea, which means “big sky” in Hawaiian. Want to know more about space secrets? Send us an email at shortwave@ npr.org.
28. What causes the Earth’s days and nights according to the article?
A. The expansion of the universe. B. The Earth’s turning around itself.
C. The Earth’s orbit around the sun. D. The Earth’s turning around the Milky Way.
29. What does “Zone of Avoidance” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. A galaxy-free space. B. A hidden part of the sky.
C. The speed of galaxy movement. D. The cause of galaxy attraction.
30. What can be inferred about the Great Attractor from the information provided?
A. It is visible with the naked eyes.
B. It is located somewhere within the Milky Way.
C. It is a large object affecting the motion of nearby galaxies.
D. It is known to be a single galaxy which pulls on other galaxies around it.
31. Where might this article have been published?
A. A cooking blog. B. A fashion magazine.
C. A gardening enthusiast’s journal. D. A public radio program’s website.

Andean bears, known for their image in the movie Paddington, are native to the Andes Mountains. Shy by nature, they usually avoid humans, making them difficult for scientists to study. Listed as endangered by the IUCN, they are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and influence from humans. The bears can sometimes go after livestock (牲畜), but studies show their threat is not as serious as believed. A family of flowering plants called bromeliads (凤梨) forms a major part of Andean bears’ food, but little is known about their foraging (觅食) behavior across the cloud forest and grassland habitats.
In the new study, researchers surveyed two species of bromeliad in mountainous grasslands in and around Peru’s Manu National Park. They recorded the position of each plant and bear feeding signs, such as dug-up or partially eaten bromeliads. GPS-enabled collar (项圈) cameras observed that Andean bears were present at the sites. However, the surveys showed that the bears foraged food in just 16.7 % of the bromeliad areas they could find. Andean bears were more likely to forage in the dry season when young and soft plants were healthier for them to eat. They seldom foraged for bromeliads outside the national park, where livestock feed.
Mountainous grasslands next to cloud forest are key habitats for Andean bears, and governments should consider how livestock influence this ecosystem. Although the bears avoided areas with livestock, they did forage in areas where livestock had been kept several years ago. This behavioral adaptability may help them recover lost habitats quickly with specific protection measures, the researchers say.
The researchers add: “The data (数据) from the surveys helps us understand the Andean bear and its habitat, and develop more effective protection strategies. The GPS camera collars use little electricity, but we stress one major limitation-the inability to collect information beyond daylight hours. Infrared LED technology will soon solve this problem in years to come.”
32. What makes studying Andean bears difficult?
A. They live in the wild. B. They have a special diet.
C. They avoid human contact. D. They attack people sometimes.
33. What was a finding about Andean bears through GPS-enabled cameras?
A. They ate up all the bromeliads. B. They foraged outside the national park.
C. They were very picky about their food. D. They were short of food in the dry season.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Andean bears are highly adaptable. B. Andean bears have recovered lost habitats.
C. Livestock are mainly from cloud forests. D. Livestock are in harmony with Andean bears.
35. What is the problem with the collars according to the researchers?
A. They waste a lot of power. B. They do harm to bears’ health.
C. They cannot provide data at night. D. They don’t work in cold temperatures.

For high school students, free time is a precious gift that should be cherished. ____36____ Many students fall into aimless scrolling through social media or end up feeling bored and unfulfilled. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can turn these spare moments into meaningful and rewarding time — one that enriches our lives, promotes personal growth, and brings us joy, not just keeps us busy with useless tasks.
____37____ For example, to improve English, you can plan to read one short English article or learn 10 new words every day. Specific goals not only avoid aimlessness but also give your spare time a clear direction and purpose. When you know exactly what you want to achieve, every minute counts.
Also, focus on activities that bring you joy and help you grow. ____38____ Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, or coding, these hobbies not only relax your mind but also develop your creativity and practical skills, making your free time more fulfilling. The key is to find something that challenges you just enough to keep you engaged without causing stress.
Learning to say “no” to unimportant things also matters a lot. ____39____ Many students feel pressured to join every social event or help others with trivial tasks, which ends up wasting their precious free time. Politely declining these invitations frees up more time for what truly matters to you. Remember, your time is limited, and you cannot please everyone while still taking care of yourself. ____40____
So start your plan now and make every free moment meaningful.
A. An important step is to set achievable goals for your free time.
B. This way, your free time becomes a source of genuine fulfillment.
C. You don’t have to fill every minute of your free time with activities.

E. It is important to balance productivity with relaxation in your free time.

B 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第一段中“My tennis shoes always shone thanks to her care when I slept. At lunch, my friends crowded around my lunch, the tastiest with enough to spare. (由于她在我睡觉时的护理,我的网球鞋总是闪闪发光。午餐时,我的朋友们围在我的午餐周围,这是最美味的,而且有足够的余量)”可知,作者通过举出网球鞋和午餐两个事例来表明她的母亲的品质。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“My family moved to Melbourne where my father re-entered academia and my mother reshaped my life with devotion and patience. Abandoning dreams of a career may have been in keeping with her era, but my mother threw herself into motherhood. (我的家人搬到了墨尔本,在那里我的父亲重新进入学术界,我的母亲用奉献和耐心重塑了我的生活。放弃职业梦想可能符合她的时代,但我母亲全身心地投入到做母亲的生活中)”和第三段中“When I was young, my mother displayed in me an absolute faith and absolute love. In her eyes, I could do no wrong that I couldn’t fix. She didn’t say overly sweet things to declare her love, but just being with her made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. My mother allowed me to live a fuller life than hers without bargain, or guilt.
根据划线部分的上文“Today’s mothers have competing demands related to professional and personal goals. Sometimes, I must put my work above their needs. (如今的母亲们在职业目标和个人目标方面有着相互竞争的需求。有时候,我必须把我的工作置于他们的需要之上)”可知,作者作为母亲面临着平衡职业目标和个人目标的难题,需要处理工作和孩子的需求的主次关系,再结合下文“We may differ in our methods and tools, but the essence of motherhood remains constant. (我们可能在方法和工具上有所不同,但母性的本质是不变的)”可知,作者认为自己和自己的母亲有所不同,但同样体现了母性;由此推知,划线部分指的是“一个试图在养育孩子和事业之间找到平衡的母亲”。故选D项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段中“If her self-sacrifice lifted me to greater heights, her second quality built the foundation. (如果说她的自我牺牲使我达到了更高的高度,那么她的第二个品质则奠定了基础)”和“Today I credit my strength and stability to the certainty that, regardless of who else judges me, my mother will not.
B 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据第二段“First, the Earth is turning very fast while it’s in space, going about 1,000 miles per hour, or 1,600 kilometers per hour. This turning makes our days and nights.(地球在太空中自转得非常快,速度约为每小时1000英里或1600公里。这种自转造就了我们的白天和黑夜)”可知,地球的自转导致了地球的昼夜。故选B。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“The Milky Way has so many stars and dust, which hides the information we want to see in that direction.(银河系有这么多的恒星和尘埃,这隐藏了我们想要在那个方向看到的信息)”以及“This place we can’t see is called the Zone of Avoidance by people who study space.(这个我们看不见的地方被研究太空的人称为回避区)”可知,“Zone of Avoidance”是被银河系的恒星和尘埃所隐藏的天空部分,这使得我们难以观察到该区域背后的天体或现象。
根据第三段“But a long time ago, in the 1970s, space experts saw that something was different about the galaxies close to us, called the Local Group. These galaxies were being pulled away from their normal path really fast, towards something we couldn’t see. They named this place the Great Attractor, but it’s hard to learn more about it because we can’t see it well.(但很久以前,在20世纪70年代,太空专家发现,我们附近的星系有些不同,它们被称为本星系群。这些星系正以极快的速度被拉离它们的正常轨道,奔向我们看不见的地方。他们把这个地方命名为“大吸引者”,但很难了解更多,因为我们看不清楚)”可知,Great Attractor是一个巨大的物体,它影响了附近星系的运动。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Want to know more about space secrets? Send us an email at shortwave@ npr.org.(想了解更多关于太空秘密的信息,可以发送电子邮件至shortwave@npr.org)”可知,NPR是一个公共广播节目,因此这篇文章很可能发表在公共广播节目的网站上。故选D。

D. This skill allows you to prioritize your own needs over others’ demands.
E. It is important to balance productivity with relaxation in your free time.
F. You can take up a hobby that challenges you while bringing satisfaction.
G. Yet in reality, these hours often slip through our fingers before we notice.
G 37. A 38. F 39. D 40. B
上文“For high school students, free time is a precious gift that should be cherished.(对高中生来说,空闲时间是应该珍惜的宝贵礼物)”指出空闲时间的宝贵价值,G选项“Yet in reality, these hours often slip through our fingers before we notice.(然而在现实中,这些时间常常在我们还没察觉时就溜走了)”与上文构成转折关系,指出理想与现实的差距——宝贵的时间往往被浪费;下文“Many students fall into aimless scrolling through social media or end up feeling bored and unfulfilled.(许多学生陷入无目的地刷社交媒体,或者最终感到无聊和不满足)”具体描述了时间被浪费的表现,与G选项中的“slip through our fingers”相呼应,上下文语意连贯。
下文“For example, to improve English, you can plan to read one short English article or learn 10 new words every day. Specific goals not only avoid aimlessness but also give your spare time a clear direction and purpose.(例如,为了提高英语,你可以计划每天读一篇简短的英文文章或学习10个新单词。具体的目标不仅能避免漫无目的,还能给你的空闲时间带来明确的方向和目的)”建议设定具体目标来利用空闲时间,A选项“An important step is to set achievable goals for your free time.(重要的一步是为你的空闲时间设定可实现的目标)”准确概括了本段主旨,引出下文关于设定具体目标的说明,其中“achievable goals”与下文的“Specific goals”相呼应,符合段落主题句的功能。
【38题详解】
上文“Also, focus on activities that bring you joy and help you grow.(此外,专注于那些能带给你快乐并帮助你成长的活动)”建议选择有益且有趣的活动,F选项“You can take up a hobby that challenges you while bringing satisfaction.(你可以培养一个既能挑战自己又能带来满足感的爱好)”承接上文,具体说明了什么样的活动符合这一要求;下文“Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, or coding, these hobbies not only relax your mind but also develop your creativity and practical skills...(无论是绘画、演奏乐器还是编程,这些爱好不仅能放松你的心情,还能培养你的创造力和实用技能...)”
上文“Learning to say “no” to unimportant things also matters a lot.(学会对不重要的事情说“不”也很重要)”指出拒绝不重要事务的重要性,D选项“This skill allows you to prioritize your own needs over others’ demands.(这项技能让你能够将自己的需求置于他人的要求之上)”承接上文,解释学会说“不”这一技能的核心作用;下文“Many students feel pressured to join every social event or help others with trivial tasks, which ends up wasting their precious free time.(许多学生感到有压力去参加每一个社交活动或帮助别人做琐碎的事情,这最终浪费了他们宝贵的空闲时间)”说明了缺乏这一技能带来的后果,与D选项形成对比,进一步论证学会说“不”的必要性,上下文语意连贯。
上文“Politely declining these invitations frees up more time for what truly matters to you. Remember, your time is limited, and you cannot please everyone while still taking care of yourself.(礼貌地拒绝这些邀请能为你真正重要的事情腾出更多时间。记住,你的时间是有限的,你不可能在照顾好自己同时取悦每一个人)”总结了珍惜时间、学会取舍的道理,B选项“This way, your free time becomes a source of genuine fulfillment.(这样一来,你的空闲时间就会成为真正满足感的来源)”承接上文,说明按照上述原则管理时间后的积极结果——空闲时间带来真正的满足感,其中“This way”指代上文提到的学会拒绝、优先照顾自己的做法,上下文逻辑一致。
