At first, he felt relaxed and walked quickly. However, as he got higher, it was harder for him to move on. His legs started to feel heavy, and he was out of breath. He began to feel doubtful. “Maybe I can’t make it,” he thought.
Just as he was about to give up, he saw an old man slowly making his way up the mountain. The old man smiled at him and said, “Keep going, boy. Every step counts.” Cheered by the old man, Tom took courage and continued.
Finally, after about one and a half hours’ walk, he reached the top. The view was amazing—the whole town was spread out below him. He realized that if he had given up, he would have missed this wonderful view.
From that day on, Tom learned that keeping moving on is the key to success. No matter how difficult things seem, as long as we keep going, we will achieve our goals.

Being left-handed sounds cool. In fact, it is not a kind of unusual talent, but a special way of living and growing.
My journey started at an early age. In kindergarten, my teacher gave me a pair of child-safe scissors. The paper I cut looked as if it had been bitten (咬)by a mouse. My teacher shook her head and told me to “practice harder”. I began to realize that most of the things in the world were designed for right-handed people.
Then came school seats with a writing board on the right. Every time I wrote, I had to turn my body with my other arm hanging in the air. So my handwriting was always messy. Later, I watched some videos online to learn the correct sitting and pen-holding postures (姿势) for left-handed people. Day by day, my handwriting became clear and beautiful.
My grandmother once tried to “fix” me by tying my left hand behind my back. “Use your right,” she would say. I tried and soon dropped a bowl of soup on the floor. Grandma gave up and said, “Maybe she’s special.”
Many researchers believe that left-handed people are more creative and better at problem-solving. After dealing with small things well, like door handles (把手) and table tennis rackets, I felt more confident.
Being left-handed means more than just using my left hand. It teaches me to think differently and face challenges with a smile. I learn to find my own ways to solve problems and get used to everyday life.
39. Why did the writer’s paper-cut look terrible?
A. Because she didn’t practice hard.
B. Because it was bitten by a mouse.
C. Because the scissors didn’t suit her.
40. How did the writer improve her handwriting?
A. By taking a handwriting class.
B. By asking her deskmate for help.
C. By watching some videos online.
41. What does the writer’s grandma mean by “Maybe she’s special”?
A. She has a special skill.
B. It’s difficult to change her habit.
C. More patience should be given to her.
42. What did being left-handed bring to the writer?
A. Talent, success and happiness.
B. Energy, interest and friendship.
C. Creativity, confidence and courage.
43. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. My Special Growing Experience
B. Some Social Skills in Everyday Life
C. The Importance of Thinking Differently
C 40. C 41. B 42. C 43. A

根据第二段内容“My teacher gave me a pair of child-safe scissors…I began to realize that most of the things in the world were designed for right-handed people.”
根据第三段内容“Later, I watched some videos online to learn the correct sitting and pen-holding postures for left-handed people. Day by day, my handwriting became clear and beautiful.”
根据第五段“left-handed people are more creative…I felt more confident”以及第六段“face challenges with a smile”可知,左撇子的经历带给作者创造力(creativity)、自信(confidence)以及面对挑战的勇气(courage)。

When you are having a conversation with someone, what do you really pay attention to? If words are the only thing you notice, then you may be missing part of the message!
In daily life, people do not always say exactly what they mean. According to Albert Mehrabian’s 7-38-55 rule, when people express feelings, only 7% of the message comes from the actual words they say. A huge 38% comes from tone (语气) of voice. The largest part, 55% comes from body language, such as hand gestures (手势) and facial expressions.
So how can people work out the true meaning behind someone’s words? We should pay more attention to how they speak—loud or soft, fast or slow, energetic or calm—than to what they say. If someone’s words say one thing but their tone and face say another, these signs can help us discover the actual meaning. For example, if someone says “I’m fine” but crosses their arms or looks away, they are probably hiding their true feelings.
Words may open the conversation, but they do not always tell the whole story. Sometimes, the real message is hidden in a shaky voice, an embarrassing smile, or a sudden silence. Good communicators do not just take words at face value but read between the lines.
44. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By telling a story.
B. By asking a question.
C. By introducing a saying.
45. Where does most of the message come from when people express feelings?
A. Actual words. B. Tone of voice. C. Body language.
46. What can we infer (推断) from the example in Paragraph 3?
A. We should listen to others carefully.
B. It’s easy to judge a person by their words.
C. People don’t often say things straight out.
47. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C.
48. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Ways to start a daily conversation.
B. The importance of polite language.
C. More than words in communication.
B 45. C 46. C 47. A 48. C

Think and Share
Q1: Every one of your friends wants to play video games, but you just want to read. What might you do?
Q2: Why do you think people sometimes do things just because their friends are doing them?
What is peer (同伴) pressure?
Teenagers often feel pressure from homework, parents and teachers. But one big pressure comes from fitting in with friends, which is called “peer pressure”. It happens when you do something just because your friends do it or ask you to join them.
What do teenagers think about peer pressure?
Li Qian
Teenagers sometimes act under peer pressure. Some even take it as an excuse to do wrong things. If your friends push you to smoke or drink, you may get into trouble and develop bad habits.
Wei Fang
Peer pressure isn’t always bad. It can help teenagers make good choices. For example, your friends may encourage you to work hard at school. Stand up for what you believe in, and you’ll feel more confident about yourself.
How can you get along with your peers?
The key is knowing when to follow others and when to stand your ground. If your friends ask you to do something you don’t want to, you can suggest something else or just say “No” and walk away.
Be confident in what you believe and hang out with friends who share the same ideas. Talk to someone you trust if you feel stressed. Don’t keep your feelings inside.
Learn to Say “No” Politely
Saying no politely means refusing a request in a kind and clear way without hurting others’ feelings. These simple words and short sentences may help you.
·I’m afraid I can’t. I have to...
·Thanks, but I’ll pass—I’m not a singer!
·Sorry, but I have to say no—I’d rather...
·Not this time, but thank you.
·I don’t think I’m the right person for that.

From an early age, we were taught if we wanted to be successful, we had to study hard and get good grades at school. ____59____ good students may do jobs they don’t like, and some even lead an unhappy life. Why is it like that?
In some parents’ eyes, school grades mean everything. However, there are many other things. For example, ____60____ to make friends with others, what to do to keep healthy, and how to be a happy person. That is to say, school is not enough if you want to have a great life.
Doing well at school doesn’t mean doing well in life. Studies show people ____61____ failed at school may not fail in life. You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn’t do well at ____62____. They caught every chance to learn and finally made it to the top.

根据后文并列的“what to do to keep healthy, and how to be a happy person”可知,此处是“疑问词+不定式”的并列结构,需要用how to make friends(如何交朋友)来保持句式一致。

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to share one of my most memorable school activities with you. It was the sale of second-hand objects we held in Grade 8.
I still remember how hard our class prepared for it. Some students brought things from home, some made posters, and I volunteered to be the “seller”. At first, I was too shy to shout for customers. But with my friends’ encouragement, I started calling out, “Come and take a look! Cheap and nice!” To my surprise, many students came to us. In the end, we bought some new books for our school library with the money we made.
This activity is unforgettable because it taught me the power of team work and courage. I overcame my shyness and learned that even small efforts can help our school.
