While studying for nine GCSEs,14-year-old Dominic Mcvey has set up his own company,
Scooters UK,which imports motorized scooters()and skateboards from the US and has
already made over f5,000 in profit.
To start the business,he needed f3,000.He used money he'd put aside from birthdays and
Christmas gifts plus some funds his father had set aside for him at birth. He had also invested in
shares on the stock()market in his dad's name as he was too young to trade shares himself.
He told his dad exactly what to buy or sell since his father knew nothing about the market.
Dominic noticed that many inner-city streets were either off-limits to cars or crowded with
traffic, and he realized there would be a great market for these products-especially with more car
restrictions in town centres now."You can carry a small one in a backpack on a train, then unfold it
to use in town,"he says."Even businessmen in suits ride them on Wall Street, and I hope to see
the same here. After researching a US company that makes these products,he became their UK
distributor.

Asking a coworker about their weekend is something many Gen Zers-people born roughly
between the mid-1990s and early 2010s-avoid.Small talk may feel awkward and boring, yet it's a
necessary skill for being socially skilled in daily life and work. However, starting a simple chat like
"Where are you having lunch?"with a coworker often feels impossible for this young generation.
A popular online video,watched nearly 3 million times,started a heated discussion,with many
Gen Zers calling such polite small talk cringe-a word they use for anything seeming forced or
uncool. The video, set in everyday work situations like lifts or hallways, showed attempts at small
talk being quickly refused, with long“umms”and eye rolls, and it resonated(共鸣)deeply with
many young viewers. Some users agreed with the unwillingness to make small talk, while others-
including fellow Gen Zers-criticized this behavior as odd, asking "Is talking cringe now?"
Similar observations came from Reddit, where teachers and employers noted that many 18-to
20-year-olds flounder in basic conversations. Some shared stories of students giving one-word
answers or avoiding eye contact during informal chats, highlighting the difficulty with face-to-face
interactions.People believe that the reasons may include over-reliance on social media, the
experience of growing up with digital communication as a primary tool,or some combination of
these factors. They suggest Gen Zers fear being seen as "cringe",so they avoid showing sincerity or
effort in even simple talks.
The consequences of this fear-particularly in the workplace, which rewards visibility,risk-
taking, and speaking up-are clear.A 2024 survey found that Gen Z workers are at higher risk of
being fired, and 1 in 6 employers are reportedly hesitant to hire Gen Zers.Poet Ocean Vuong argues
that "cringe culture"stops young people from enjoying life and pursuing goals. The good news is
that Gen Zers'complicated feelings toward small talk have drawn wide attention.
28.What was the popular video about?
A.Awkward workplace conversations.
B.Insincere youth politeness.
C.A discussion on social media trends.
D.A talk through body language.

A.Master essential spoken skills.

A female wild wolf living on the central coast of British Columbia was filmed pulling a crab()
trap out of the ocean to eat the bait(诱饵).
The traps were set by the Heiltsuk Nation as part of an environmental program run by the local
community, which centers in part on fighting the spread of the European green crab,a non-native
species that is damaging local ecosystems. The underwater traps-nets with bait inside-are
marked by floating buoys()tied to them with ropes. The problem was constant trap damage.
"People were puzzled by what destroyed the traps-they guessed it might be powerful ocean animals
but weren't certain,"said biologist Kyle Artelle.
To find out, researchers set up a video camera on a trap. The next day,the video showed a
female wolf swimming ashore and dragging the rope with its teeth.Eventually she ate the bait and
left in under three minutes."It was not what we were expecting,to say the least,"Artelle said.
"We know wolves are super smart,so their ability to do highly intelligent things isn't surprising.
But this behavior has never been seen before."Artelle noted the wolf put together a series of steps
to reach the bait."It's problem-solving exactly how humans do it,"he explained.
Whether this wolf actually used a tool comes down to the definition of "tool use".Some
definitions say "tool use"means the use of an object external to yourself to achieve a goal, which
this clearly is.But others say that you need to construct the tool in some way. So,in this instance,
she didn't tie the line to the crab trap because it was already built for her.
"If a human had done what the wolf did, however,no one would hesitate to call it tool use,
Artelle argued."We wouldn't sit there and say,'She didn't create the crab trap,so she's not really
exhibiting tool use.'I didn't construct this laptop that I'm using right now;we use a lot of tools
that we don't construct ourselves.
32.What was the ultimate goal of setting the traps underwater?
A.To catch ocean animals.
B.To offer foods to crabs.
C.To balance the ecosystem.
D.To attract female wolves.
33.How does Artelle assess the wolf's action in the video?
A.Purposeful.B.Natural.
C.Repetitive.
D.Playful.
34.What can be inferred about the definition of "tool use"?
A.It's not concrete.
B.It needs updating.
C.It's still one-sided.
D.It has no final one.
35.What's Artelle's attitude to the viewpoint that the wolf was engaging in tool use?
A.Favorable.
B.Unclear.
C.Dismissive.
D.Doubtful.

Memory is a skill that can be improved with proper methods, which is especially important for
exam preparation.36 They often feel stressed by the pressure to keep details in mind. Here're
some simple and practical ways to boost the memory effectively.
Spaced repetition helps improve long-term memory efficiently.Studying all at once is not
effective.Such last-minute learning only keeps information in short-term memory, making it easy
to forget during exams.37 You can go over new material on the second day, then again on the
fourth, seventh and fifteenth day before the exam. This way strengthens brain connections, making
information stay longer in your memory.
Mnemonic(助记符号)devices make boring facts easier to recall..Turn boring facts into fun
associations with mnemonics. For example, make an acronym(首字母缩略词)from the first letters
of what you need to remember,or create a catchy rhyme.38
Visualization turns abstract information into vivid memories.Abstract concepts like formulas,
historical events,or vocabulary words are often hard to hold in memory for long.39 Try
turning abstract concepts into mental pictures, drawing simple mind maps or using colored pens to
highlight key points. For example, when memorizing English phrases, link them to vivid scenes-
like "break a leg"with a performer smiling on stage.
40 Ensure 7-9 hours of sleep daily,as memory improves during rest.Eat foods like
walnuts and blueberries and do regular exercise to keep your brain active and focused.
These simple methods, when practiced consistently, will help enhance your memory for
exams.
A.Strong memory is the key to exam success.
B.Our brains remember images better than text.
C.Exams test not just memory, but applied understanding.
D.A healthy lifestyle supports better memory performance.
E.Instead, you need to review what you've learned at regular periods.
F.The more vivid the connection is,the easier it is to recall during exams.
G.Students struggle with remembering large amounts of information for exams.

Charvet Drucker and her husband Mark were sailing back home across the calm waters of
Saratoga Passage off Camano Island after a day of fishing. The sun still shone bright, and the
waves gently rocked their small boat as they reflected on the day's catch.Everything felt peaceful
until Charvet noticed movement that didn't look normal about 100 yards away.
“Look,Mark!”she said,pointing quickly.A group of orcas(虎鲸)was circling fast,their
black-and-white bodies cutting through the water. At the center of their circle was a young seal(
)-smaller than most, its body shaking as it tried to swim fast to escape. Its flippers()grew
hard to move, and it could barely keep swimming as it ran out of strength.
The young seal's panic was easy to see.It swam back and forth as fast as it could, but the
orcas kept following, closing in step by step. Its speed dropped sharply, body sinking without
control, chest moving up and down fast, barely able to stay on the water, let alone get away. Its
tail moved weakly with no real power.
Charvet's heart ached when she watched it struggling, and Mark slowed the boat, both unable
to look away.Just when hope seemed lost, the seal changed direction and swam toward them. Its
wet eyes locked onto Charvet's,as if sending a clear message:"Can I please come up?The orcas
are running after me.I'm in danger.
"We have to help it,Charvet said firmly, looking at the fishing net lying next to the boat's
side-their usual tool for catching fish,now a possible lifeline.Mark nodded,driving slowly toward
the seal, which pressed its body against the boat, letting out a soft, shaking cry.It lay almost
motionless, only its nose exposed, too weak to move, small body shaking nonstop, relying on the
boat to keep from sinking.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Charvet grabbed the fishing net quickly.
The couple sat quietly with the young seal.
