Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·河北石家庄·期末)
On one hot day in Faisalabad, a city in northeast Pakistan, the sun was shining with its full might. Everyone was in a hurry to go back home and sit in a cool airy place. Even the stray animals were looking for a shady place to sit under.
Sara’s day at school was very busy and she was very tired. She had to wait for her father who had worked overtime to pick her up. Waiting in the school ground, Sara didn’t want to talk to anybody.
When Sara reached home, the food was ready and her mum was waiting for her. After greeting her mum. Sara sat on the chair to eat as she was very hungry. But her hunger turned into anger when she saw that her mum had cooked daal chawal(扁豆饭). She wanted to eat pizza that day while her mum had cooked daal chawal.
“Mum, what is this? Why don’t you cook the food I like? There are always vegetables and daal chawal at our table. I don’t want to eat them. I am not hungry anymore. I am going to order a pizza for myself,” Sara said as she stormed off in anger to her room.
Her mother said nothing. Upstairs in her room, Sara called her best fiend Aliya, wanting to have a little chat so that she could express her frustration and find some comfort.
“Sara, how are you?” it was Aliya’s mother on the phone.
“I am fine, Aunty. Can I talk to Aliya?” Sara replied respectfully.
“Aliya is having her lunch. Today, I’ve cooked her favorite dish, Aliya’s mother replied excitedly.
Sara became curious. ”Aunty, what’s Aliya’s favorite dish?“ Sara asked.
“Daal chawal, she loves it! ” Aliya’s mother answered and continued, “What has your mother cooked today?”
“Daal chawal," Sara replied in a low voice. She recalled her conversation with Aliya about food at lunchtime in school, where Aliya had mentioned the foods she often enjoyed at home but never complained about any of them.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·四川绵阳·期末)
As a young boy, I was innocent. Every vacation I looked forward to two things-seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various jobs when he was young and wove ( 编 织)his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa's stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss.It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆),probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease. Following the doctor's directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa's birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was filled with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn't express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball, wearing basketball jerseys (球衣), with grandpa cheering us on ten years before.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·山东青岛·期末)
In a small country school, there lived two close friends named Ray and Toby. Ray came from a wealthy family, while Toby’s family struggled to make ends meet. Despite their differences, the two were inseparable and shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours together, whether it was playing games after school, helping each other with homework, or simply sharing stories under the shade of the old banyan tree.
On a sunny afternoon, Ray brought his precious stamp collection to school, eager to show Toby his latest treasure — a rare (稀有的) stamp gifted by his uncle. Toby, who had never seen such beautiful stamps before, stroked the stamps gently, his eyes wide with wonder. “Such an amazing collection! This rare stamp is incredible, Ray!” He exclaimed with admiration. After school, Ray packed the stamps back into his schoolbag and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his best friend.
However, the next morning, Ray’s joy turned to panic when he discovered that the rare stamp was missing. He tore through his room, searching every corner and every book, but the stamp was nowhere to be found. His heart sank as a troubling thought crowded his mind — Toby was the only one who had got up close and personal with the stamps. Could he have taken it?
The next day at school, he confronted Toby with anger. “Did you take my stamp?” he asked directly, searching Toby’s face for any sign of guilt. Toby, shocked by his questioning, replied with mixed feelings, “No, Ray! I would never take anything that belongs to you. You’re my best friend!”
But Ray, consumed by frustration and disappointment, couldn’t let go of his doubts. “You were the only one who saw it,” he said coldly. “If you hadn’t taken it, then where could it be?” Deeply hurt by Ray’s lack of trust, Toby turned away without another word, his heart heavy with the weight of the accusation (控诉).
The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided each other, the once-strong bond damaged by the loss of the stamp.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·湖南衡阳·期末)
Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers: The basket winked at me and I knew—I had to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

Passage 5
(24-25学年高一下·山东潍坊·期末)
When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!”
It was the voice of her father, a sea man who seldom returned home due to his duties earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their loved ones.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane inquired, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment. How could she have forgotten such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s gaze (凝视) wandered around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had been too busy with work this week to attend to such domestic matters.
Glancing at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·福建福州·期末)
One morning, I sat in the back of the classroom, feeling nervous and restless. I had always been shy and hated being in the spotlight. I rarely participated in activities or spoke in class. That day, however, our teacher announced we would have a class assembly (集会) next week, and each class needed to select a student to give a short speech about the importance of honesty.
The room fell silent as my classmates looked at each other nervously. The teacher asked, “Who would like to volunteer?” She looked directly at me and I shook my head, hoping not to be chosen. But she smiled and pointed, saying, “You, Richard.” My heart raced. I wanted to say no, but I could feel everyone’s eyes on me. My face turned red and my hands were shaking, but I accepted the challenge.
After school, I still could not believe it. I rehearsed (排练) giving a speech on honesty in the empty classroom. Fear and excitement mixed inside me as I imagined all the students waiting for me. I knew it was a big challenge, but a small voice inside told me it could be a chance to change something.
The next morning, I bought a notebook and started writing the speech. I rehearsed each line in front of a mirror. My voice quivered (颤抖) at first, but slowly I gained courage. I wrote and rewrote the speech, remembering how honesty had helped me before. It felt strange but comforting to watch myself speak.
On the morning of the assembly, my knees shook backstage as I waited for my turn. Finally, the moment came and I walked up to the stage with sweaty hands but determined eyes. I took a deep breath and stepped forward. My heart was racing as I prepared to speak.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·河北邯郸·期末)
Payback
By the time I reached fourth grade, I was taller than every student in my school, and even my teacher, Margaret Liston. Unfortunately, even though I was tall, I was awkward and not very good at sports or school. I became the class clown, and not by choice. I struggled with math, spelling, and reading.
Each afternoon Miss Liston finished the day by reading to the class for fifteen minutes. I was relieved to see the end of another day’s embarrassments and would lose myself in her voice and the story, usually a chapter book such as Danny, The Champion of the World. During those quiet minutes, I watched her read effortlessly, magically, as though she recognized every word, a talent I desired to be mine. If I could read with such ease, I could find my way to happier places and times. I don’t remember how she took me under her wing, but by the time I moved on to fifth grade I was reading at an eighth-grade level. My self-image and life path were changed forever.
When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I had an absolutely certain response: “I want to read.” I had no idea that professional reader was not a workable career path. By my senior year of high school that goal had changed into becoming a journalist.
During my senior year of college, I found a job as a newspaper reporter and discovered that while I had the diligence and desire to be a journalist, I had no talent to succeed. Five years of struggling to write one good sentence was enough. I quit writing. But I couldn’t quit eating or pay my rent with my good looks. I quickly found a job as an operating room orderly (护理员) at a local hospital.
A friendly instructor took me aside one day and suggested that I consider becoming a registered nurse. At that time, male RNs were rare. It took another year for me to make the leap. I learned far more easily than most of my classmates. I could read, write term papers and patient care plans, and study with effortlessness and pleasure.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·浙江宁波·期末)
If I hadn’t been a struggling violinist, I might have never become a writer. In fourth grade, my school had an orchestra program, and I eagerly signed up to learn the violin. I loved the idea of being in the orchestra and went to the music lessons every week.
The orchestra teacher, Mr. Black, was strict. He told us that if we damaged our instruments, we’d be kicked out of the program because the school couldn’t afford the expensive pieces of the instrument. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very good at the violin. One day, while practicing, the bridge of my violin flew off and the strings broke.
Scared of Mr. Black’s reaction, I tried to fix it myself with some glue. But when he saw my crooked bridge, he told me I couldn’t be in the orchestra anymore. Instead, he suggested I join the singing club.
I did switch to the chorus club, where I stayed, thinking I had found my place. I enjoyed singing with others, even though I didn’t have a great voice. And as luck would have it, the elementary school sing club automatically fed into the junior high chorus. We had lots of chances to give performances. Instead of a violinist, I became a singer in an orchestra. Don’t be confused. My singing was not outstanding, but in the midst of so many others, I could blend (融合).
One Monday after a big performance, my English teacher Ms. Rose asked if anyone was interested in writing an article about his or her singing experience.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·浙江杭州·期末)
Emma sat in the back of her math class, staring confusedly at the numbers on the board. No matter how hard she tried, algebra (代数) never made sense. Every failed test, every red mark on her paper, nearly ruined her confidence. She started avoiding eye contact with her classmates, fearing they would see through her — see how incapable she felt.
At home, her parents encouraged her, but their words sounded empty. “You’re good at so many things, sweetheart,” her mom would say. But Emma didn’t believe it. What was the point of writing a good article when she couldn’t even solve a simple equation (方程)?
One afternoon, as she was walking past the school’s board, a poster caught her eye: “Join the Literary Club - Where Words Come Alive!” Without thinking twice, she took a picture of the details. The next day, she stepped into the club room nervously, expecting to feel out of place. Instead, she was welcomed by the club leader Lily, a friendly girl with curly hair. She accepted Emma’s application to join the club, and patiently introduced the club activities to her.
Week by week, Emma found herself addicted to words. She expressed her emotions in writing poems and stories that reflected her fears and hopes, and — most importantly — shared them with others. Her pieces were met with admiration, and for the first time in a long while, she felt valued for something she could do.
As her confidence grew, something unexpected happened — her fear of math began to fade. One evening, Lily, who was excellent at math, noticed Emma struggling over her homework. “Want some help?” she offered.

Feeling upset, she wiped her wet hands on her pants and put on her jacket. She decided to go for a walk, hoping the fresh air would clear her mind

One missed the ball completely and tumbled (翻滚) onto the grass, only to pop up instantly. “My turn again!” he shouted, as if failure meant nothing Emily slowed to watch. Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·福建泉州·期末)
Carlos Perez has always loved art, but he has not always chosen the proper ways to show it. His life was once messy. He made poor decisions and had a negative influence on others. He showed his artistic abilities through graffiti (涂鸦), using spray paint (喷漆) on public spaces.
But one day, everything changed. That noon, a cold wind blew as Carlos held his spray cans tightly. Restless and driven by habit, he slipped quietly to the school stairway. His hands shook-. not from the cold, but from fear. It was his first time to make a daring decision to leave his expression of creativity in such a serious place.
Buried in the world of color and imagination, he painted a golden bird whose wings and eyes shone in the sunlight like living fire... until someone came.
A tap on his shoulder froze him, heart beating fast. Carlos dropped his spray can. He had expected a scolding (责骂) — or punishment. Immediately, the thought of running away flashed in his mind.
“Hold up, Picasso!” A voice cut through the quietness. It was Mr. Staples, the art teacher, who approached. Warm appreciative smile flooded on his face as Mr. Staples took a photo slowly. “That bird is awesome… Your art belongs to the art museum! How did you make it so perfect?”
“I... I used to graffiti on walls. I love everything in nature.” said Carlos. Mr. Staples nodded with great interest. “You know,” he said, “there’s an art festival next month at the community cultural center. We’ve been looking for someone to redesign the mural (壁画).” He handed Carlos a card with an address. “Come tomorrow! I will be there for you.”

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·江苏镇江·期末)
Tyrone Howard, a middle school student in Philadelphia, faced a difficult choice when his favorite math teacher Mr. Rosetti started a chess club. As an only child, Tyrone always relied on his best friend Malik — his “brother from another family” — for companionship. They grew up in the same neighborhood, shared sports enthusiasm, and even dreamed of joining the same high school team. But Tyrone’s secret love for chess complicated things.
One afternoon, after showing his “A” math test to his mother, a college economics teacher, Tyrone mentioned the chess club. She supported the idea, hoping he would make new friends. However, Malik’s reaction shocked him. “Chess is for losers!” Malik said, his locker (储物柜) door shaking with flags of their favorite sports teams. Tyrone laughed awkwardly, but his heart sank, wondering if following his passion meant losing his oldest friend.
That night, his mother shared her own story: skipping fifth grade caused her to be separated from her best friend, but it led to new opportunities. “Growth sometimes means risks and only you can decide what’s worth the risk, “she said. Encouraged, Tyrone attended the chess club’s first meeting. To his surprise, the six other students were brilliant, friendly, and far from “losers”.
Over the next few weeks, Tyrone spent more and more time with the chess club. He made new friends, improved his skills, and even started competing in local tournaments (锦标赛). Meanwhile, Malik successfully made the school basketball team and had to practice every day. Sometimes, Tyrone saw Malik at the locker.
Two months later, the chess team qualified (有资格) for a national tournament in New York. Though they didn’t win one of the top three places in the overall competition, the tournament did award prizes in different grade divisions (等级). It would take a while to work out the winnings, so the tournament officials would inform winning schools of results by mail.

Passage 3

Alice sat in the car while palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Alice began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car’s cool air. “The aquarium (水族馆) won’t be crowded, I bet, and people are going to notice me. I hate wearing this prosthesis leg (假肢).” She felt tears coming from behind her eyes. “Not being normal is the worst,” she thought to herself.
Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a corner of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with a a prosthetic tail instead of a real tail?” she asked an aquarium staff member. He nodded and replied, “Yes, that’s Betty. She’s a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her?” “This girl dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail,” Alice caught her breath. “She’s just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail to help her swim like a dolphin’s supposed to swim,” the staff member continued. “Every day, Betty shows us anything is possible if we believe.”
Alice felt her heart was touched. She waved at Betty. Looking at Alice, Betty raised her flippers(鰭), came to her and lifted her head. “She’s swimming right into my arms,” Alice said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Alice: We’re the same.
Back home, all Alice talked about was Betty. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Alice. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Alice suffered the pain in her leg. After a through examination, the doctor explained bad news to them that she would need some surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell (地狱) came back to her.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·浙江丽水·期末)
Penny had always believed she was born to act. Every night, she practiced lines in front of her bedroom mirror, perfecting graceful moves like the actresses in her favorite movies. When her middle school announced The Twelve Dancing Princesses, she spent weeks preparing — even borrowing her sister Diana’s ballet shoes, though they pinched (挤痛) her feet. “Pain is part of the art,” she told herself, imagining the strict drama teacher Mr. Ellison nodding in approval.
But on casting day, her name was nowhere on the list. Mr. Ellison offered her a job on the stage crew (工作人员) instead. “You’ll learn how theater really works,” he said. Penny forced a smile, hiding her disappointment.
Backstage life was quieter than she expected. Penny wore all black, disappearing into the shadows during rehearsals (排练). Sometimes, she mouthed the princesses’ lines silently, her hands tracing an imaginary crown.
Opening night arrived as scheduled, but the lead actress got injured minutes before the curtain. Mr. Ellison scanned the crew, searching for someone who could step in. Here came an opportunity! Penny’s hand shot up. “I know the lines!” she said. He hesitated but handed her the princess’s dress.
Unfortunately, the performance was a disaster. She stumbled over dances, mixed up scenes, and tripped up a prince. The audience’s laughter echoed in her ears. Afterward, she ran to her room, sobbing. Her sister Diana found her curled under the blankets. “Come,” she said, leading Penny to the roof.
The night sky stretched endlessly. “Some stars can’t be seen now,” Diana murmured, “but their light is already traveling. It just takes time to reach us.” Penny wiped her tears. “What if my light never comes?” Diana squeezed her hands. “It will. You just have to keep trying.”
Weeks later, Penny saw a poster for a new play: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Auditions (试镜) were open and she was familiar with the character Helena. That night, Penny climbed to the roof alone. A single star flickered weakly. She traced its light with her finger, her sister’s words ringing in her ears.

On an ordinary workday in New York, a soft humming sound came from 26-year-old Sarah’s desk. It didn’t come from her phone or computer, but from a small grey thing curled up beside her keyboard. This wasn’t an ordinary toy—it was an AI pet.
The AI pet had fluffy fur, big blinking eyes, and artificial skin that gave off a gentle warmth. It would turn its head toward Sarah, make a soft cry, and rub against her hand just like a needy kitten. Although it couldn’t move around like a real animal, its built-in camera could “see” people, food, and other objects, and it would respond with eye contact, sounds, and gestures. With the AI pet by her side, Sarah felt less lonely at work.
However, having learnt about her over-reliance and potential insecurity about AI creation, her friend Elvis strongly recommended quitting it. Just when Sarah thought the danger was over after turning off the AI pet, new trouble crept in. One night, she received a strange email with a video attached. When Sarah clicked it open, her hands started shaking with fear—the video recorded everything she did at home, from chatting on the phone with family to sitting alone in a daze. The email also had a horrible message: “Your precious AI friend may be silent now, but its eyes are everywhere.”
After that, Sarah felt scared all the time, as if someone was watching her every move. She searched every corner of her apartment, trying to find hidden cameras, but found nothing. Angry and desperate, she even considered giving up on all electronic devices. Just when she felt most helpless, her adopted puppy, Lucky, wagged its tail and gently rubbed against her leg. Looking into Lucky’s innocent eyes, Sarah suddenly realized that the warmth and comfort she felt with the real puppy were something the AI pet could never replace.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·河北衡水·期末)
One noon, Mark knocked at the door, saying, “Take the letter.” Then, a little girl answered from inside, “I’m coming.” But after 3 minutes, no one came. Mark, the postman, said again, “Please hurry. I have to go to the next place.”
The girl, Jane, replied, “Sir, put the letter under the door. I’m coming. But it’ll take more time.” The old postman replied, “No, I’m waiting. It’s a registered letter. So your signature is needed.”
After a long time, the door open. Mark was angry and was about to shout at the girl. But when the door opened, he was shocked to see a little girl who had no legs. He immediately had great pity for her. He quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left.
The little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother wasn’t in this world. And her father used to work far away. He wasn’t rich and could not buy the girl prostheses(假肢). To take care of her, her aunt stayed with her every night. But she lived alone during the day.
In about two months, whenever mail came, Mark would knock and call Jane. Then he’d wait patiently at the door. Gradually, interaction and attachment(依恋) grew between them. And they learned more about each other.
Jane noticed Mark used to come barefoot(赤脚) to deliver mail. The rainy season came. One day, when Mark left after delivering the letter, his footprints were left on the wet soil. Jane came out with a piece of paper, put it on the footprints and took down the picture of his feet. Then she handed her aunt the pocket money she had saved, and asked her to get shoes of that size and keep them in the house.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·江苏扬州·期末)
Stranded (困住) far from family, I refused to give up
The date had been circled on my calendar for months — Friday 18 December 2013. Mum was coming to pick me up from university and bring me home for the Christmas holidays. There was nothing that made me happier than Christmas with my family. Our small celebrations were the same every year. I could picture it. Mum, my younger brother and me all dressed up and opened presents on Christmas morning by the tree, the same festive CD sound tracking our day.
The call came at 10am that Friday. I was dressed and packed, Christmas presents divided into carrier bags. I’d made sure the fridge in my shared student kitchen was empty, everything eaten or chucked away, and my live-in carer was leaving at lunchtime.
“We are not going to make it,” my mum said on the phone. “Ken was blanketed overnight, with up to 20cm falling in three hours. We’ve crawled as far as Detling, but they’ve closed the motorway because it was dusted in a thick layer of snow. There’s no way we can get to you.” I was stranded.
Alone in my student bedroom, I burst into tears. “What am I going to do?” My life was different from that of other students. Without my carer, I had no one to help me cook, wash and get into bed. My friends had already left and the halls of residence were eerily (怪异地) quiet.
Suddenly, a crazy idea came across my mind, “How about going home independently using the wheelchair?” Anyway, I decided to have a try. After calling multiple firms in the hope that their one wheelchair-adapted vehicle was available, I was lucky to get an accessible one to the train station. One hour later, I arrived, but found myself stranded on the bustling platform, feeling helplessly at the steps leading up the train.
Just then a few young men noticed my struggle in the wheelchair and came to help me.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·河北定州·期末)
My grandmother wiped the coffee table for the third time, her movements quick and precise. The way she and my mother rushed around the apartment, one might have thought royalty (王室成员) was expected, not just my piano teacher, Miss Sheldon.
At 6:30, the table was set, but something felt wrong. The familiar smell of baked potatoes and chicken-fried steaks — dishes I had specifically requested — was missing. Instead, the kitchen counter was crowded with plates of kibbeh (碎羊肉面饼), stuffed grape leaves, hummus, and other Lebanese (黎巴嫩的) dishes. My heart sank. Miss Sheldon would never eat those!
Before I could protest, the doorbell rang. Miss Sheldon stood there, smiling warmly, accompanied by a man named Ray, whom she introduced as her friend. My mother welcomed them enthusiastically, and we all settled at the dining table. I prayed silently that my family wouldn’t embarrass me with childhood stories.
To my surprise, my grandmother immediately began praising Miss Sheldon’s teaching, while my mother proudly served the unfamiliar dishes. My stomach was upset as Ray and Miss Sheldon hesitantly took small portions of the grape leaves and kibbeh. I held my breath, waiting for their polite but forced praise.
But then, something unexpected happened. Miss Sheldon’s eyes lit up after the first bite. She said excitedly how delicious the food was, and Ray enthusiastically agreed, mentioning that his own mother often cooked Lebanese dishes.
The atmosphere shifted instantly. My grandmother’s face brightened as she learned that Ray’s mother was from Lebanon. The conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with shared cultural references and laughter. Even my mother’s embarrassing story about my childhood failed to weaken the mood.
Later, my mother gave me a knowing smile. “Still wish I’d made chicken-fried steak?” she joked. I sighed, unable to argue. For once, she had been right all along.
By the end of the evening, what I had feared would be an awkward dinner turned into a joyful gathering. As Miss Sheldon and Ray left, they thanked my family warmly, with Ray even promising to bring his mother over for a dinner.

Passage 5
(24-25学年高一下·河北邢台·期末)
In a busy city, an old man rode his tricycle(三轮脚踏车) along the street. His face was full of the lines of time. His hands held the handlebars with care. He was returning home from the market, and his tricycle was filled with fresh produce.
When he was wondering how much he could sell the produce for, he got distracted(思想不集中的) and the tricycle hit a car which was parked by the roadside. The old man's heart sank as he surveyed the long scratch(划痕) damaging the new paintwork of the expensive car. He stood there with worry and regret on his face. He knew the value of such a car and the potential cost of the damage. "I can't afford this," he whispered to himself sadly.
Just then, a stranger approached the old man. The stranger, dressed in a sharp suit, looked at the scene and immediately realized the situation. "The paintwork is damaged. Can you afford to pay for the damage?" he asked gently. The old man shook his head and looked down. "No, I can't," he replied.
The stranger looked around and spoke in a low tone. "If you can't afford it, why don't you leave? Do you wait for the owner to come?" It was more of a suggestion than a question. A small smile appeared on the stranger's mouth.
The old man hesitated, torn between his sense of responsibility and the practicality of the stranger's advice. After a moment of internal struggle, he made his decision. He pulled an old plastic bag out of his pocket. He put all the money inside, which was less than twenty dollars, under the wiper(雨刷) of the car. Then, he felt the scratch on the car with his hands. With one last look at the damaged car, he began to push his tricycle away, glancing back every few steps.

【答案】
Sara realized how mistaken she was. Here she was, complaining about the very food that her friend cherished. Aliya had never once grumbled about her meals. Sara felt ashamed of her ingratitude. Her mother worked hard every day to provide for the family. Sara understood now that food was not just nourishment; it was a reflection of love and care. She felt a sense of guilt for her thoughtless words and actions. Determined to make a change, Sara stood up, resolved to apologize to her mother and appreciate the meal that awaited her.
But as she reached the kitchen door, she was surprised to see her mother preparing pizza for her. Tears welled up in Sara’s eyes as she witnessed her mother’s unconditional love. “Mum,” she said softly, “I’m so sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I should have appreciated your effort instead of complaining.” Her mother smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with tears of joy. “Family is about understanding and forgiveness. Come, let’s eat together and enjoy our meal.” They sat down at the table, hearts mended and spirits high, sharing a meal filled with love, understanding, and forgiveness.

【答案】One possible version:
My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition. After school, my friends and I would play basketball with him. He was happy like a child. Sometimes, he just sat there watching us, cheering and laughing. In my heart, not only was he my grandpa but also my best friend,a most important person in my life. With his company, I enjoyed a sweet childhood. How I wished we could go back to the past!
A bright idea for grandpa's birthday came to my mind. "Why not bring the old days back to grandpa?"I thought to myself. In the following days, I bought the same basketball jerseys and arranged a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. All the family members put on a special memory-recalling basketball game. The "same players" on the court, running and laughing, reminded grandpa of something. He cheered and clapped, with a big smile. I was overjoyed to see the spark in his eyes.

【答案】范文
One day as Ray left school, something dropped from his school uniform pocket. Bending down quickly, he picked it up and his eyes widened. The rare stamp he had lost was right there! His face turned red as he realized the truth that he must have forgotten to put it back in his bag after showing it to Toby. Memories of their argument rushed into his mind, and guilt was full of his chest. He had hurt his best friend without cause. Determined to fix things, Ray ran toward the banyan tree where Toby often sat, the stamp clutched tightly in his hand.
Seeing Ray rushing to him, Toby was surprised. “Toby, I’m so sorry!” Ray said, out of breath and holding out the stamp. “I found it in my pocket. I shouldn’t have accused you. You were right. You’d never take anything from me.” Toby stared at the stamp, then at Ray’s red eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. “It’s okay, Ray. Friends make mistakes, but we trust each other, right?” Ray nodded, and they walked back to the banyan tree, laughing as if the silence had never existed. Their bond, once broken, was now stronger than before.

【答案】
“I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained. I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I could’t find. Each day, I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night, I crossed off another day on the calender as I counted down the days. As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn’t bother me. The basket was worth it. The anticipation grew stronger as the days ticked down.
Finally, I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others’ bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my Mom. Seeing my sad face, she gently wiped away my tears. Holding my little face in her warmth hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today. “Your basket is not the same basket. It’s unique because it was obtained by all your worthwhile effort and waiting.”

Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the delivery boy came to the door. They took the cake and thanked him happily. It was a beautiful cake with a princess on it, enough to show the importance of Mom in Dad’s heart. Everything was ready for the big moment.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes and the big cake, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Jane took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday!

【答案】
The audience was completely silent as I spoke the first sentence. My voice, initially weak and trembling, gradually grew stronger as I continued. I shared personal stories about honesty, how it had guided me through difficult times and taught me valuable lessons. With each word, I felt more confident, as if a new strength was flowing through me. The silence in the room was replaced by focused attention, and I could see some of my classmates nodding in agreement. I realized that I wasn’t just speaking; I was connecting with them, sharing something meaningful. The fear that had gripped me earlier faded away, replaced by a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
When I finished the speech, all my classmates stood up and cheered. The applause was thunderous, and I was overwhelmed with a mix of relief and joy. My teacher walked up to me with a big smile, patting me on the back and saying, “Well done, Richard! You really nailed it!” My classmates surrounded me, offering congratulations and words of encouragement. I felt a warmth in my heart that I had never experienced before. That day, I not only delivered a speech but also overcame my shyness and gained newfound confidence. I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone could lead to amazing experiences and personal growth. From then on, I became more active in class and participated in various activities, no longer afraid of being in the spotlight.

【答案】
One spring evening during my first year as an emergency room nurse, an ambulance brought in an elderly woman. She looked weak and pale, her hands shaking slightly as she held a small handbag. When I looked at her chart, my heart skipped a beat. Her name was Margaret Liston. I leaned closer and gently said, “Miss Liston?” She turned her head, her eyes searching my face. For a moment she said nothing, then asked softly, “Do I know you?” I smiled. “You were my fourth-grade teacher. You taught me how to love reading.”
Liston’s eyes widened, and a small smile appeared. “You were the tall boy in the back, always listening closely during story time.” I nodded, suddenly filled with emotion. “You helped me through my hardest school years.” Miss Liston was admitted to a room that night. Over the next few days, I visited her whenever I could. I brought books — some old favorites, including Danny, the Champion of the World. I read to her every evening, just like she once read to me. She helped me through my difficult childhood. Now, it was my turn to help her through this hard time in her life — with stories, care, and gratitude.

I was thrilled. That night, I poured my heart into the article, describing how I had felt nervous before the performance but how singing with my friends had made me feel brave and alive. When I finished, I realized that I had enjoyed writing more than I had ever enjoyed singing. The next day, I handed in the article, and Ms. Rose told me that it was excellent and that she would publish it.
Paragraph 1. The following year I became the editor of the school newspaper, considering that I had found my calling. I loved every minute of it, from interviewing students and teachers to editing articles and designing layouts. I discovered that I had a talent for words and a passion for storytelling. Mr. Black, who had once told me I couldn’t play the violin, even came to one of my newspaper’s events and praised my work. I realized that sometimes, when one door closes, another opens, and it’s up to us to walk through it and find our true path.

Instead of rejecting it, Emma nodded her head. As Lily patiently guided her through the equations, Emma began to realize that struggling didn’t mean she was incapable — it just meant she was learning. Each time she solved a problem with Lily’s help, a small part of her self-doubt melted away. She started to sit a little straighter in math class, no longer hiding behind her textbook. In the Literary Club, her voice grew steadier during readings, and classmates looked to her for feedback. Emma no longer defined herself by her weaknesses. Instead, she embraced her growth, knowing that confidence wasn’t about being perfect — it was about believing she could improve.

Carlos looked at the card. Then he picked up the spray can. For the first time, he felt hopeful.

After much consideration, Carlos arrived at the cultural center the next day. His heart was pounding with a mix of excitement and nervousness as he stepped inside. Mr. Staples was already there, waiting for him with a warm smile. “Carlos, I’m so glad you came. This is your chance to shine,” he said encouragingly. Together, they discussed the design for the mural, and Carlos poured his heart and soul into creating a vibrant nature scene. He used his skills to paint a lush forest, a sparkling river, and various animals in their natural habitats. As he worked, he felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment that he had never experienced before.
During the art festival, Carlos saw visitors gathering around his painted nature world. Their faces lit up with wonder and admiration as they took in the details of his artwork. Some even took photos and praised his talent. Carlos felt a surge of pride and happiness. He realized that his art could bring joy to others and make a positive impact on the community. From that day on, Carlos continued to pursue his passion for art, but this time, he chose the right ways to express it. He became a role model for others, showing that with determination and guidance, one could turn their life around and achieve great things.

【答案】
One week later, Mr. Rosetti came into the chess club with a letter in his hand. “This letter is from New York City,” he announced. All eyes fixed on him, Mr. Rosetti opened the envelop and read aloud, “We are pleased to inform you that your team has won the first prize in your grade division…” Before he could finish, the club erupted in celebration, jumping and high-fiving. At the award presentation the next day at school, when Tyrone and his teammates walked onto the stage, they realized it was rewarding to pursue something they genuinely loved. Yet deep down in his heart, Tyrone still longed for the approval of his old friend.
After the award presentation, Tyrone found Malik waiting for him with a smile by the locker. “Congratulations! That’s impressive,” Malik said. Surprised by the sincerity, Tyrone felt a lump rise in his throat. Ashamed and apologetic, Malik continued, “I’m terribly sorry for those negative comments. You guys definitely aren’t losers.” Tyrone smiled, realizing growth didn’t mean sacrificing friendship. As they walked out of the school together, the afternoon sun cast their shadows side by side, as if symbolizing their journey towards new dreams while preserving their enduring bond.

She started fearing surgery again and refused to go to hospital for treatment.

【答案】范文
“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery?” Alice’s mom said to herself. Then she had an idea and she decided to take Alice back to Clearwater. On arriving at Clearwater, Alice couldn’t wait to see Betty, the lovely dolphin that comforted her and boosted her mood. As Alice’s mother pushed the wheelchair to Betty, she raised her flippers, came to her and lifted her head. Alice couldn’t hold back her excitement. Looking at the girl, Betty seemed to say, “Go and have the operation.” Alice absolutely knew what that caring eyes were conveying, so she decided to keep a more optimistic state of mind.
Encouraged by Betty, Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to. Finally came the day when Alice was in the hospital again. Though feeling nervous and afraid of the pain the surgery might bring, Alice faced it bravely. The operation was a success. Her mother took her to Clearwater the day when she was discharged from hospital. Inspired by Betty’s swimming like a normal dolphin, Alice practiced hard to walk. Her confidence has been improved as she gradually recovers. She has no idea what future holds for her but she will do anything to have a better look at this wonderful world.

Para. 2: On opening night, Penny stood behind the curtain.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Para. 1: “Why not try one more time?” Penny said to herself. As she thought of the audition, her heart beat faster — not with sadness, but with a slim hope, like a distant star shining. She picked up the script, held her head high, and started to practice. Each night, she practiced lines in front of the mirror, shaping Helena’s love and pain into every word. The ballet shoes that once pinched her now guided steady steps. When she forgot the lines, she paused, smiled and restarted — no tears, just determination. At the audition, her voice rang clearly, each emotion true. Mr. Ellison’s surprised nod said it all, “You’ve got the part.” Penny’s heart fluttered, a tiny star reigniting.
Para. 2: On opening night, Penny stood behind the curtain. When the faint murmur of the audience reached her ears, her fingers unconsciously twisted the folds of her costume. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm down. As the curtain rose, Penny closed her eyes, remembering Diana’s warm hands, the rooftop stars, and all those nights of practice. When she opened them, stage lights embraced her like old friends. Her movements flowed with grace and confidence. In the front row sat Diana smiling through proud tears. Standing there, bathed in cheers, Penny finally understood what Diana meant. Stars keep shining through the dark, no matter how long it takes. Every backstage hour, every stumble and every retry led to this moment.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·安徽合肥·期末)

【答案】
Determined to fight back, Sarah joined forces with Elvis to get out of the trouble bravely. First, they carefully analyzed the strange email and the video, looking for any clues that might lead them to the culprit. They also contacted the police, providing all the evidence they had. Meanwhile, Sarah started to document every strange occurrence around her. Elvis, on the other hand, delved into the technology behind the AI pet, trying to find out if there were any loopholes that could have been exploited. They worked day and night, not letting fear stop them.
After a lot of joint efforts with the police, the problem was finally solved. The police traced the source of the email to a hacker who had been targeting users of the AI pet. He had found a way to hack into the device’s camera even when it was turned off. The hacker was arrested, and Sarah felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. From then on, Sarah cherished Lucky more than ever. She realized that real - life connections and the love of a living being were far more valuable than any artificial creation. She also became more cautious about using AI products, always making sure her privacy was protected.

【答案】
Just then a few young men noticed my struggle in the wheelchair and came to help me. They carefully lifted me and my wheelchair up the steps and onto the train. I thanked them profusely, tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes. During the journey, I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. I had never done something like this on my own before, but I was determined to reach home. When the train finally pulled into my destination station, I took a deep breath and wheeled myself off, ready for the next part of my adventure.
When I finally arrived home, making it indoors, mum was shocked to see me. She couldn't believe that I had managed to make it home on my own. She hugged me tightly, tears streaming down her face. I told her about my journey and all the kind people who had helped me along the way. We spent a wonderful Christmas together, and I realized that even in the most difficult situations, there is always a way forward if you have the courage and determination. That Christmas became a special memory, a reminder of my strength and the kindness of strangers.

【答案】
The following week, Ray kept his promise. He really took his mother and Miss Sheldon to my home. His mother, Mrs. Thompson, arrived carrying her own version of kibbeh. She shared it with all of my family members. The kitchen then was filled with excitement as the two mothers exchanged cooking tips, comparing spices and techniques. Miss Sheldon watched with amusement, joking that she might need Lebanese cooking lessons next. As for me, I no longer worried that my teacher might not like the dishes cooked by my mother.
What had begun as a worrying evening turned into the start of a friendship. From that day on, our two families began meeting regularly, sharing all kinds of meals and stories. We knew each other better and became closer. Even I, who had disliked the dishes before, grew fond of Ray’s mother’s cooking. Looking back, I realized how wrong I had been to assume Miss Sheldon wouldn’t appreciate our food. That dinner taught me that unexpected connections often bring the most joy — and that my mother’s natural feelings were usually right.

Passage 1
Passage 2
Passage 3
Passage 4

Passage 2
