B Severe plantar fasciitis (足底筋膜炎) meant I’d been a full-time wheelchair user since I was 12. By the time I was 16, I just wanted my leg off. It took six years for the doctors to operate as they insisted on waiting until I was older and in a good enough place mentally. I held off until I finished my degree. Afterward, with an artificial leg fitted, the world felt like a different place. I’d not walked in years. Suddenly I was a lot taller and no longer in any pain. When I was in a wheelchair I discovered a real love for sport, I started to compete in wheelchair racing, and soon found I was good at discus (铁饼) throwing. I started competing in Tough Mudder (an endurance event series), progressing from walking with crutches to blade (小腿假肢) running. I now compete in sports internationally and have won the silver medal for adaptive judo at the World Judo Games. At the time of the surgery I worked as an accountant, but I soon realized I didn’t want to be sitting in an office all day as I’d been in a wheelchair for so long. Therefore, as soon as the revision surgery was complete, I handed in my notice. My career took a different path after I was asked to be a guest presenter for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Now I speak to schools, colleges and organizations about a wide range of subjects such as disability, discrimination, and perseverance. I share my own personal stories, whether that’s how I lost my leg and what I learned from it, my perseverance, and how I followed my dream. Now most of my income comes from working as a motivational speaker, which I’ve been doing full time for a year. I love what I do, and if I continue to inspire others to do what they want to in life, then I’m happy. 24. How did the author probably feel after his leg was cut off? A. Anxious. B. Relieved. C. Hopeless. D. Annoyed. 25. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The author’s passion for sports. B. Awards the author won playing sports. C. What sports the author is good at. D. How the author prepared for Tough Mudder. 26. What do the underlined words “handed in my notice” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Quit the job. B. Asked for leave. C. Got promoted D. Spread the news to others. 27. What’s the main reason for him to be a motivational speaker? A. It was his dream during childhood. B. He enjoys the fame it brings him. C. It brings him money and a sense of fulfillment. D. He wants more people to care about the disabled. C This week Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy released a warning about the risks that social media presents to the mental health of children and teenagers. Adolescent mental health has been declining for years, and an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame. But experts continue to debate just how much impact they have. Numerous studies demonstrate that adolescent rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness have skyrocketed in the U.S. and elsewhere since around the time that smartphones and social media became ever-present. Yet the role social media plays has been widely debated. Some researchers have sounded the alarm, arguing that social media provides the most credible explanation for problems such as enhanced teen loneliness. Other researchers have been sitting on the fence. In 2019, Jeff Hancock, founding director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University, and his colleagues completed an analysis of 226 scientific papers dating back to 2006. They concluded that social media was associated with not only a slight increase in depression and anxiety but also improvements in feelings of belonging and connectedness. Some recent studies have attempted to clarify the link between social media and mental health asking, for instance, whether social media use is causing depression or whether people are being more active on social media because they’re depressed. In an attempt to present evidence, Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Alexey Makarin and two of his colleagues conducted mental health surveys taken by college students across the country. Their study, published in 2022, found that soaring rates of depression and anxiety, as well as declined academic performance, followed Facebook’s arrival. Makarin says much of the harm they documented came from social comparisons: students viewed the online profiles of their peers and believed them to “have nicer lives, party more often, have more friends and look better.” “In total, there’s an increasingly clear picture that, indeed, social media has a negative impact on mental health.” Makarin says. “We are not saying that social media can explain 100 percent of the rise of mental health issues... But it could potentially explain a sizeable portion.” 28. What do we know about social media? A. It plays an important role in treating mental illness. B. It is the leading cause of adolescent depression. C. It has negative influence on adolescent mental health. D. Its impact on mental health is still unknown. 29. What is Jeff Hancock’s attitude towards social media? A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Opposing. 30. How does social media cause harm to teenagers according to Makarin? A. By threatening their academic performance. B. By presenting them with online profiles. C. By making them feel worse-off than others. D. By encouraging them to party more often. 31. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To warn people of the harms of social media to teenagers’ mental health. B. To expose findings and opinions on the link between social media and mental health C. To analyze the causes of worsening adolescent mental health. D. To propose an effective approach to handling mental illness. D In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) set an ambitious goal: reduce the global physical inactivity rate by 10 percent by 2025. However, despite numerous public health campaigns and efforts tied to the Olympic Games, people are moving less than ever. The latest data indicates that 31 percent of adults worldwide aren’t meeting physical activity guidelines, a 5-percentage-point increase from 26 percent in 2010. Among teens, the numbers are worse: 81 percent aren’t moving enough. So, what went wrong? From public health policy to urban design issues, there are numerous ways to criticize current strategies. However, some experts are asking a more fundamental question — have we been promoting physical activity all wrong? For years, public health campaigns have relied heavily on the “exercise is medicine” narrative to promote physical activity. We have all heard it time and again: get active if you want to prevent illnesses like diabetes and heart diseases. It is a message based on strong scientific evidence, and you would think that the promise of good health is the best possible motivator. Benjamin Rigby, a UK public health researcher, argues that reducing movement merely as a way to prevent disease oversimplifies why people choose to be active. “We want to play, to laugh, to explore, to dance, and feel proud and ultimately, to have fun and feel good,” he says. A growing number of studies support this idea of shifting the spotlight away from health-focused narratives. A UK analysis of 123 studies concluded that health reasons aren’t necessarily what motivate people to get off the couch. The most effective messages highlight the short-term rewards of being active — like feeling good, reducing stress or having fun with friends — not the threat of illness. Solid evidence also shows that people are more likely to stay active when it’s fun. Enjoyment is linked to young people consistently participating in sports. And remember Pokémon GO? That craze has its most engaged users walking an extra 1473 steps a day on average, just because they were excited to “catch them all”. Given the evidence, why haven’t public health messages tailored more closely with motivations centred on enjoyment? While health narratives appeal to institutions, with the next target of reducing inactivity by 15% by 2030, change is urgently needed. 32. What happened to the global physical inactivity rate between 2010 and 2025? A. Teen inactivity decreased significantly. B. Adult inactivity rose from 26% to 31%. C. The 10% reduction goal was achieved. D. WHO successfully reduced inactivity rate by 5%. 33. What’s the problem with the current physical activity promotion strategies? A They attach little importance to the Olympic Games. B. They focus too much on the urban design issues. C. They ignore the scientific evidence behind exercise. D. They rely too much on health benefits as motivation. 34. Why does the author mention “Pokémon GO” in Paragraph 5? A. To present a fact. B. To give an example. C. To make a comparison. D. To explain a concept. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Finding emotion in motion. B. Exercise is the best medicine. C. Connecting others through games. D. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here. So, when our teacher Mr Dow announced a group project to create a brochure about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was excited. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was. I was paired with two classmates: Jake who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm didn’t last long. Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged (耸肩) and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought. At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared. Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.” 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 With only three days left, I knew I had to act. ___________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. _____________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
