Yash Mehta got a great idea for his first science project when he visited a school for blind students in Old Delhi. He noticed that the students there didn’t use electronic braille (布拉耶盲文) readers because they were too expensive. So, Yash decided to make a cheaper one!
His invention uses little motors that create vibrations (震动). They feel like the raised dots (凸点) in braille. He tested it on students at the Blind Relief Association, and it allowed the blind students to read braille just as easily as reading an ordinary book.
Yash admitted he didn’t know much about software before, but he learned how to code (编程) by watching videos and reading posts. “Learning this new skill is really cool,” he said, “and when I saw everything work together the first time, I was so excited!”
But it wasn’t always easy. At first, Yash tried using TENS units, which use electric pulses (电脉冲) to reduce pain, to create the braille dots. But they didn’t work. Instead of giving up, he changed the way the information was sent to fingers. This idea helped him finish his invention.
For his hard work, Yash received the first-place Technology Award at the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. Now, he plans to add OCR to his machine. OCR can translate printed or handwritten texts into braille, not just computer texts.
For kids who are new to science fairs, Yash has some advice:“Try to find a project that you think you can do with your skills. And ask people in your community what problems they need to solve. I think that’s the most important part — getting to know what they really need.”
