①In our fast-changing world, social customs are not staying the same. What people are supposed to do in different situations has been evolving (演变). This is especially clear in greetings, which are the first step in social communication.
②Traditionally, customs were quite strict. In many Western cultures like the United States, people used to be supposed to shake hands in formal meetings. For friends, a simple “hello” was often enough. In China, the rules were different. People, especially the younger ones, were supposed to show clear respect to the elders. They would often nod slightly or bow their heads a little. Physical touch was less common than in the West.
③However, things are changing quickly. Nowadays, the handshake is still common in the West for business, but among friends, hugs are often acceptable. In modern China, while respectful nods are still polite, handshakes have become very common in cities and workplaces. Young people usually use casual “Hi” or “Hello” in daily life.
④The most noticeable change among young people is the rise of the “fist bump (碰拳).” It is now seen as a cool, quick, and friendly greeting among teenagers worldwide. It is less formal than a handshake and helps people feel connected quickly. ______
⑤Why are these changes happening? People’s lives are busier and faster, so greetings have become quicker. The old strict rules sometimes feel too slow or formal for today’s lifestyle. The key point now is not just following one strict rule, but showing respect makes everyone feel comfortable.
⑥It is important to understand the changes in today’s modern, connected world. Therefore, let’s keep an open mind and never stop learning.
30. What were younger people in China traditionally supposed to do when greeting the elders?
A. Shake hands. B. Give a big hug. C. Nod or bow. D. Use a fist bump.
31. Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A. Another new custom is the “elbow bump,” which has become popular during global health problems.
B. Some people still think the old ways of greeting are the best and show more respect to others.
C. Some health experts suggest we should all stop using handshakes in the future to prevent illness.
D. Bowing is still common in many Japanese offices, where it is seen as an important business manner.

A. The History of Handshakes
B. Changes in Greeting Customs
C. The Popularity of Greetings
D. Different Cultures, Different Greetings

C
My family had a long-running cycle of growing up poor. Both my mom and dad came from large families with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their parents had also grown up with very little.
When I was five, I showed an interest in machinery. By Grade 3, I was learning to program using the BASIC language. Then, one day in high school, my computer science teacher suggested I attend a computer camp. He gave me a brochure (小册子) and I excitedly took it home. That excitement quickly disappeared as my mom saw the price of the camp: several hundred dollars. That evening, I went into my room and cried my eyes out.
But a few weeks later, I got a phone call. It was the head of the computer camp telling me I was admitted to the camp. I could hardly believe my ears. At that camp, I met many like-minded kids and learned how to build websites. It lit a fire in me.
Ten years later, I received another call from the camp director. “I’ve found something I think you’ll want to see,” he said, suggesting we meet. When we did, he pulled out a long handwritten letter my mom had sent when I was 15. She wrote that I was a smart kid. She talked a lot about my early love for machinery and computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t afford the cost of the computer camp and hoped in her heart that they would still accept me. I broke down crying at once.
Over the years, I continued to learn as much as I could. In 2014, I finally landed a job where I could use all my skills. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve broken my family’s cycle of living poorly.
And all I want to do now is to sit down with my mom and thank her for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life I have today.

七、阅读回答问题(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Do you have a goal you want to achieve before your next birthday? Or by the end of the next five years, perhaps? We often hear about the importance of setting goals. We may think of these goals as the key to our happiness-achieve them and everything will be perfect. But have you ever reached a goal and instead of feeling happy, you’ve thought, “Is that it?” Or, “Now what?”
That feeling has a name. It’s called “arrival fallacy”—the illusion (错误的观念) that reaching our goals will bring us lasting happiness.
Whether it’s a new job, owning your dream home, or anything else, there might be some initial (最初的) joy, but if you’re experiencing the arrival fallacy, that may be followed by emptiness (空虚) and stress to achieve something new.
So why does this happen? Surely achieving our goals is enough to make us happy? Not always. According to experts, we might be overestimating (高估) the happiness that such achievements will bring.
And social scientist Adam Dorr says we often make the mistake of imagining our goal as a fixed object, when really it’s just part of life. But Ben Shahar adds that the arrival fallacy doesn’t mean we shouldn’t set goals-in fact, we need them to help give our lives focus.
As well as large things, our goals should include many small things, like helping out more around the house or spending more time with family, small but important goals that don’t just “end”. If we really want to beat the arrival fallacy, we also have to work out what makes us happy. And in surveys, spending quality time with people we care about is often number one for happiness.
Even if we do have clear career goals, experts remind us to think about enjoying the journey too, and not just the destination (目的地).
63. What is “the arrival fallacy”?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
64. How might someone feel after reaching a goal if they experience the “arrival fallacy”?

B. Changes in Greeting Customs
C. The Popularity of Greetings
D. Different Cultures, Different Greetings
